All About Constellations

Ancient Times

Have you ever looked at the stars at night? Have you ever

noticed any star patterns? These star patterns are called

asterisms. In ancient times, people looked at these asterisms

and told mythological stories about creatures and characters

related to these star patterns. Others believed that gods left

marks on the sky showing that they were watching over them.

Farmers used to looked at asterisms to determine the best time

for planting or harvest.

Constellations Now

Later, astronomers began to study asterisms and put them

together in maps and called them constellations. Each year

astronomers noticed more and more patterns and in 1925 they

officially named 88 constellations. Some of these names include:

Orion, Andromeda, Scorpious, Sagitarius, Lynx, and Ara. Some

of these constellations may look different for some people, so

they don’t always match the shape or meaning they represent.

Are they Real Objects?

You can identify the position of stars by looking at the

constellations. You are able to see the patterns and identify

shapes because constellations have imaginary lines when

connecting all the dots, or stars together. From Earth we could

assume that the stars in a constellation are very close to each

other but in reality they are separated by enormous distances.

When Can I See A Constellation?

Constellations can be seen from different parts of the Earth at

different times of the year. For example, the best time of the

year to see the most popular constellation, Orion can be seen in

Who Were the Ancient Greeks?

About 2,500 years ago, Greece was one of the most important places in the ancient world. The Greeks were great thinkers, warriors, writers, actors, athletes, artists, architects and politicians. The Greeks called themselves Hellenes and their land was Hellas. The name ‘Greeks’ was given to the people of Greece later by the Romans. They lived in mainland Greece and the Greek islands, but also in colonies scattered around the Mediterranean Sea. There were Greeks in Italy, Sicily, Turkey, North Africa, and as far west as France. They sailed the sea to trade and find new lands. The Greeks took their ideas with them and they started a way of life that's similar to the one we have today. The Early History of Ancient Greece

People have been living in Greece for over 40,000 years. The earliest settlers mostly lived a simple hunter-gatherer or farming lifestyle. The Minoans were the first great Greek civilisation. They didn't live on mainland Greece but on the nearby island of Crete, between 2200BC and 1450BC. They were known as the Minoans after their legendary king, Minos.

After the Minoans came the Mycenaean civilization, from mainland Greece. They were fine builders and traders, but they were also great soldiers. They famously fought in the battle of Troy. Homer, an important Greek writer, told stories of the Mycenaean age in his books The Iliad and The Odyssey.

After the Mycenaean age ended in about 1100BC, Greece entered a Dark Age. It is known as a dark age because nobody knows much about what happened - all written language and art disappeared.

This is the Great Palace of Knossos on the island of Crete. The Minoan civilization grew rich on trade and they built glorious palaces decorated with beautiful wall paintings.

Tuesday-Social Studies After the Dark Age

In 800BC, almost 300 years after the Dark Age began, Greek civilization slowly emerged again. The Greeks started trading more with the outside world, they held the first Olympic Games and they fought off the invading Persian army. This period is known by historians as the Archaic period of Greek history. During this time many of the cities in Greece were ruled by a king-like figure.

Around 480BC Greece entered a golden age which lasted for 200 years. The people built fantastic temples, made scientific discoveries, wrote plays and founded the first proper democracy. Historians call this Classical Greece.

The final period of Greek history is known as the Hellenistic period. This lasted from 323BC to 30BC, when the Romans took control of Greece. The Romans didn't destroy Greek life, though. They respected the Greeks and copied many things about their culture, including their buildings, beliefs and clothes.

The Parthenon temple was built for the Greek goddess Athena. It sits on top of a hill called the Acropolis and looks out over the city of Athens.

Do you know any stories from Greek mythology? Myths are the stories that the ancient Greeks told about their gods.

The Cyclopes are famous figures in Greek mythology. You may have heard of them. The Cyclopes were giants. They only had one huge eye, and it was in the middle of their foreheads.

The rulers of the universe hated the Cyclopes. They threw the one-eyed giants into the underworld. A powerful god named Zeus decided that he needed the Cyclopes' help. Zeus freed the Cyclopes from the underworld.

Out of gratitude, the Cyclopes gave Zeus gifts. Zeus received powerful thunderbolts that he could use as weapons. Zeus used his new weapons to overthrow the world's rulers. Then Zeus became the ruler of the universe.

Have you ever wondered why ancient people created myths? Perhaps it is because they had so many questions about the world. They might have wondered why the sun rose. Or maybe they wondered why lightning and thunder happen. Ancient people didn't always have scientific explanations for these things. Many of them told stories known as myths. These myths explained how things happened. Many ancient people had myths that explained how the world began. These are known as creation myths. Creation myths are very important myths in a culture's mythology. One important ancient Greek creation myth is told in a poem called Theogony. The poem tells how the world began. First there was Chaos. Chaos means complete disorder. Out of Chaos came the mother of much creation, Gaia. She gave birth to Uranus, the king of the sky. He became the father of many important Greek gods.

Thursday-Science

The Science and Importance of Boat Making

Greek people used boats to fish, trade with other places and also to sail to other cities in search of goods. Sometimes the Greeks hired out their ships to fight for other countries, too. Sometimes they fought as pirates, capturing other people’s trading ships.

What Did They Look Like?

Most of the Greek ships were around 100 feet to 115 feet long. Some of them were covered in brass so that they would be strong in case there

was a war. The ships were made of wood and were usually about the same size. If you compared the ships to something today, they would probably be about as

long as about three buses in a row. Below are images of Greek ships. As you look at them, decide on what design your ship would be and what you would name it. Practice illustrating it below for your final project on Friday.

According to old stories, the Trojan War was fought in Troy thousands of years ago. The ancient Greeks were attacking the city of Troy. Homer, a Greek poet, describes the Trojan War in a famous epic poem. It is called the Iliad. The war started partly because of two people, Paris and Helen. Helen was the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris, a prince of Troy, wanted her to be with him. There was a problem, though. Helen was already married to the King of Sparta, Menelaus. Paris went to visit Helen. At night they ran away together. The couple went to Troy. King Menelaus was furious. He put together a huge army. The army went to Troy to fight and get Helen back. The Greeks and the Trojans fought for 10 years. However, the Greeks could not get past the wall surrounding Troy. They knew they couldn't win the war if they couldn't get into Troy. They decided to play a trick on the Trojans. The Greeks built a gigantic wooden horse and left it for the Trojans as an offering. The Trojans were very excited. They thought they had won the war. They pulled the horse into the city. Later that night, when Troy was asleep, Greek soldiers emerged from inside the horse. They opened the city gates and let the entire Greek army in. Troy was finally defeated. Helen had to go back home to King Menelaus.
