PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Reach for the stars...

Despite only being in the Academy for four days this week after the May Bank Holiday on Monday we have still managed to pack an amazing amount of activities and learning opportunities in this week. This newsletter is full of stories ranging from our successful former students representing the county at Twickenham, through to our stars of today performing to rapturous applause at The Acorn and the Hall for Cornwall. Some performers have even been offered more “gigs” as a result!

Peer Education Event

All of this will be tinged with an an element of remembrance today as we think about some of the students whose lives have been cut short, when we take on Humphry Davy School in our annual Luke Bradwell Memorial Match at the Mennaye today at 4:15pm after school. As ever we will be raising funds for Luke’s charity, the Bone Cancer Awareness Trust. Please come along and support the event, I can guarantee that the game will be very competitive so why not enjoy a great match whilst helping children who are currently battling with illness. Can We Retain The Shield Again?

This morning we had the privilege to host a Clear Peer Education Celebration Event at the Academy which recognised all the hard work and training completed by our Year 10 Clear Peer Educators. The event involved a presentation in the Hall to a number of invited guests, parents, commissioners and professionals from various agencies across Cornwall. This programme has been incredibly positive with our educators showing great skill, knowledge and enthusiasm in the delivery of the Healthy Relationships Workshops to Year 7 and 8.�

Next week promises to be equally exciting as the wait is finally over for our students who have been eagerly anticipating “reaching for the stars” when they undertake the start of the main GCSE examination programme.

GCSEThey have been preparing since the start of the year using a technique that has broken up their learning into a series of small steps or “nudges” that rely on the premise of “if you want to learn/recall something, make it easy”. This is particularly useful when encountering an examination question that is worded in a way that may initially be confusing and cause a moment of panic. The trick is to regain composure, remain calm, re-read the question and let the facts that you do know “nudge” you towards remembering all the rest. We can all do our best to help them too by moving around the campus and enjoying break time as smoothly and quietly as we can to give them as little distraction as possible.

After much anticipation we will finally be “Borrowing the Moon” for the week, where we will have the chance to see and handle real samples taken from the moon’s surface and also meteorites that have been collected by the National Space Academy.

Everyone will get the chance to “reach for the stars”.

Impressive Maths

Emilia was part of a small team of students who visited Plymouth University for a Maths Masterclass.� When she returned home she was self motivated to produce this booklet that captured much of what she had learnt during the course of the day.� She also

chose to explore Pascal's triangle further and find other links and patterns.� She has displayed it in a colourful and interesting way and spent a significant amount of time refining her ideas.� The booklet can be shared with other students to give them a deeper understanding of the relevance of Pascal's triangle.

Year 10s were put through their paces by the Royal Marines Visibility Team last week. On the last day of Project Week our Year 10s were

tasked with challenges that tested their physical resilience, team-work, problem-solving and leadership skills. Year 10s showed determination, initiative and excellent communication skills in mastering their tasks.� A big thank you to the Royal Marines for giving our Year 10s this amazing opportunity.

All of Year 10 had an exciting day on Friday working with volunteers from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, the Army, Job-Centre Plus, Jacksons Wealth Management,� Harris Begley, Cornwall Housing, Next Steps, Local Enterprise Partnership and Cornwall

College.� Laura Edmundson from CSW delivered presentations on the benefits of STEM, the changing job market and expectations in the work place.�

Our students learnt about employment skills, job applications and and then took part in a mock interview where they were able to put into practice all the knowledge they had gained.� �Well done Year 10 for putting yourself out of your comfort zone, asking lots of questions and getting involved.

Students thanked all the volunteers for an enjoyable day where they felt more prepared and confident for the world of

work.

This week we welcomed the French Exchange into the Academy. Our visitors, from Concarneau in Brittany were very fortunate with the weather and got to see lots of what Cornwall has to offer during their time here. Highlights included the Eden Project

and the Minack Theatre as well as spending time in the Academy with their partners.�

Yesterday both English and French partners got to spend time together reflecting on the experience and considering similarities and differences between here and Concarneau, they also got to enjoy a tasty cream tea! The evening was spent in Penzance Fire Station for a barbecue with games organised by the crew. Despite there being a shout midway through, the remaining crew members kept the burgers coming and were fantastic hosts.�

Today the group have spent the day doing last minute shopping for souvenirs as well as

having a last look around Penzance. We look forward to visiting them during May half term and wish them a bon voyage!

Dropping Back In!

When the Cornwall Air Ambulance had to land at Mounts Bay on Thursday it was a�chance for Paramedics Steve Garvey and Kris Lethbridge to return to school.

Steve and Kris are both Critical Care Paramedics on the helicopter that provides life-saving care all over the county and the Isles of Scilly and are both former students at Mounts Bay.

There was not an emergency and they were not needed to rush off so Steve, a student who left�in 1988, and Kris, who left in 2003, were both able to share memories of their life and time at school and caught up with Mr Harvey their former PE teacher.

It is always great to see what former students are doing today.

The Air Ambulance is a service provided through the generous donations of the people of Cornwall�and we would like to support them with a donation when we visit the Royal Cornwall Show on 8th June.� Please do get in touch if you would like

Marshall and Tamaya take a short cut home from school one day to avoid the school bully – through the forbidden, completely out-of-bounds woods. But what’s the worst that can happen? It’s just a bunch of trees, after all.

What Tamaya and Marshall don’t know is that a teeny tiny bacteria has escaped from a nearby science laboratory and settled in the woods. It’s man-made, high-energy, and fast-multiplying, and looks a bit like fuzzy mud. And when Tamaya scoops up a chunk of fuzzy mud and throws it at the bully, well, that’s the beginning of everything…

Imagine a mad scientist invented something that grew so fast it could cover a football pitch in days. Imagine it escaped into the wild. What might happen?

Mixing Tamaya’s and Marshall’s stories with interviews and science reports, this is a

fast-paced and exciting story of bravery, friendships, and science gone wacky.

This week Artists of the Week go to two students. Megan Sawbridge in 11 Blue and Holly Locke in 11 Orange have produced

beautiful sustained outcomes as part of their exam. The students have worked in acrylic on a small scale, and both projects also feature the theme of light. Megan's project was inspired by the painting technique of chiaroscuro, extreme areas of light and dark in an image. Holly has been investigating shadows created by mundane every day objects, playing on our perception of stereotypical still life painting. Both students

have produced a mature and insightful body of work. Well done!�

On Friday night, Amber Symons played a stunning solo set to a capacity Hall for Cornwall crowd as part of the Cream of Cornwall Chairman’s Charity Concert. The concert featured acts from across the county, with a broad cross section of styles

covering everything from Carrick Winds, solo flautist Elena Rautio and incredible songwriter STXTCH from dBS in Camborne.

Amber took the stage early in the second half, after the always amazing Open Up Orchestra, and absolutely brought the house down. She has been working away on the follow up to last year’s Kaleidoscopic Minds, and used this

performance to showcase See Me Cry from the new album, which will be out in the summer. She seemed completely at home in the county’s most prestigious venue and received a rapturous reception from the audience.�

At the end of the show she took some time to meet with people from the audience and sell copies of her CD, and even picked up a couple of gigs for the summer too! As always, she represented MBA amazingly and we’re all really proud of what she is

achieving.

Music Update

If you’re out doing your shopping on Sunday and pop into Morrisons you will meet lots of our Qube Records artists packing bags and raising some extra funds for

our European Tour which sets off in just under two months (gulp!). We’ve all been hard at work on the preparations all year and it’s getting close now, so please pop in and say hello, we’re there all day!�

Each Thursday evening the Music Block is taken over by some of the best up-and-coming musicians from our local primary schools at Mini Band MixX! The project brings together children from across the area to write songs, jam, and develop their musical

skills. The sessions are run by myself with expert help from a team of Year 9 Silver Arts Award students, who take the registers, run the warm up exercises and help me to run the best sessions we can. The team, made up of Katie Trahair-Davies, Edith Willet-Green, Beth Lumb and Austen Barden have been amazing from the beginning, and last week even came in to school super early to deliver some of the exercises they’ve been running with the children in TeachMeet, getting the entire staff team of MBA up and making “music”! It was a brilliant exercise for the young leaders and (almost) all of the staff threw themselves into it.�

Mini Band MixX continues to grow each week and there will be performances of the music we are making coming up in the not too distant future, so watch this space!

On Tuesday 8th May, over 45 Year 7, 8 and 9 students were involved in our�MixXjam�performance at The Acorn Theatre. This musical extravaganza happens twice a year, and is designed to give all our musicians and bands a taste

of the professional live music world.

First on the scene were our amazing Year 9 sound and lighting team, who unpacked all the instruments, and set up the stage under close supervision from Steve Warhurst, The Acorn’s own professional technician. Steve provided invaluable feedback on what the professional venue expects from a sound and lighting engineer.

At 6pm all the bands arrived to ‘sound check’ on the stage, making sure that all their instruments and amps were set up to satisfy their own standards, but also working with Steve to get the ‘front of house’ sound great for the audience.

By 7pm The Acorn was full to the rafters, including the extra seating in the balcony. At 7.10pm the first half was started with a stunning performance from Tegen Campbell (Year 8) and

Caitlin Stephens (Year 7), followed by over an hour of amazing acoustic performances ranging from covers through to original songs from this years upcoming school albums and EPs.

After a short break the second half featured performances from three of our school bands, including The MBs jazz/funk band, playing an amazing swing version of The White Stripes ‘7 Nation Army’, �newly formed Year 7 rock band

‘Out of the Blue’ with a great version of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, and our final performance from a mixed Year 8 and 9 band fronted by the irrepressible Ziji Lee.

A massive thank you to The Acorn Theatre, and we are already looking forward to the next event.

Congratulations to Joe Gordon, Year 7, who has just been given a two year contract at Plymouth Argyle Football Club. Joe has worked really hard to get to this point. It has taken lots of dedication,�commitment�and hard work, not to mention hours travelling

to and from Plymouth three times a week!� Joe first started playing at Plymouth Argyle when he was 8 years old. Joe's passion has always been football.

Twickenham Action for Former Student

On Wednesday afternoon West Cornwall travelled to Bodmin Football Club for our second fixture of the season against East Cornwall but this time we were playing for the Cornwall Schools FA Festival Shield.

I was honoured to be given the Captaincy role for this fixture and it was another big tick and achievement for myself to captain my district!

This Cornwall FA Festival Shield is a new annual competition for the East and West Cornwall teams where the Cornwall age groups representing their districts compete against each other in their various age groups and the overall results will determine if the East or West are the festival winners. This year the U14s and also the U15s took part in fixtures.

The U14s fixture ended 2-2, this was the same result from the earlier fixture against East Cornwall a few months back and its fair to say both the West and East teams are evenly matched!

Next up the U15s battled in very wet conditions and the final result was East Cornwall 3-1 West Cornwall, making East Cornwall the overall 2017/18 winners.

Next season the competition will be held in West Cornwall where we hope to bring the cup/Shield back to West Cornwall for 2018/19!

It has been a fantastic experience to be part of the West Cornwall and also the County squad this season- many thanks to Kevin Lawrence and Frazer Cadman- being on the 2018/19

season!

On Friday 4th May the Year 7 netball team attended the county tournament at Camborne School.

During the group stages the team faced Wadebridge (Won 7-3) Truro School (Won 8-5) Pool (Won 16-0) and Helston (Won 7-0) The girls had a fantastic first round and won all of their games convincingly. This meant the team went through as group winners into the top division during the afternoon.

In the second round MBA were in the top final group stages with Truro High, Penrice and Falmouth. The girls were off to a fantastic start in the final round winning their first game 6-2 against Penrice. Their second game saw them face Truro High in a tight match, however MBA lost their first game of the tournament 5-3. Going into the final game against Falmouth, MBA faced a tough game and unfortunately lost in a very

close 5-4 game. However, Falmouth had previously lost to Penrice.

This meant that MBA finished in second place in the County Tournament! This is a fantastic result and the best a MBA netball team have performed at a county tournament in a long time! Definitely a team to watch for the future. They should be very proud of their performance.

The English Schools Athletic Association (ESAA) preliminary rounds are held between teams within each County. The highest scoring teams in the first round competition progress to one of seven Regional A Finals, and all other qualifiers progress to

Regional B Finals.

Teams comprise 12 athletes for girls, and 14 athletes for boys, and each athlete may do no more than two events: one track and one field event; one track and the relay; one field event and the relay. Competitions are scored on a points basis where better performances gain more points, this was a team event and points

add together for the team total.�The boys event took place on Tuesday 8th May and the Girls on Wednesday 9th May at Carn Brea. The boys Junior Team� (Yr 7 / 8s) finished 6th out of 15 and the Inter Team (Yr 9 / 10s) finished 7th out 15. There were some good individual performances in the junior boys from Oscar H – Hurdles (14.0secs), Aiden H – 200m (28.7secs),

Kylo M – 800m (2.35mins) and in the Inter Boys Levi B Jaidan P – 100m (12.6sec) and Sam P – 800m (2.22mins)

County Athletics Event

James Midgley-Payne (9 Orange) and Jennifer Midgley-Payne (7 Blue) were back on form recently at the Tang Soo Do, Korean Karate 5th International Seminar and Youth Challenge 2018, held at The International School of Brussels, Belgium. This is an annual event aimed at under 19s, where a whole host of different nationalities come together to test their skills against one another and share knowledge. The whole Tang Soo Do Korean Karate ethos is very much one of a big international family, all pooling resources to share knowledge and keep the spirit of Tang Soo Do alive.

The Masters from each country attending held seminars, teaching students some of their unique skills. After a fun and friendly team building day of activities and seminars, things turned serious and an international competition was held the following day, where newly acquired skills were showcased and put into practice. James was delighted that a technique he had learnt to put down a 'machine gun kick' (normally extremely difficult to counter), worked perfectly, allowing him to steam in at his opponent and he was awarded a point for successfully using it! Certainly a valuable technique to have added to his repertoire.

Representing England for the first time this year and competing against fighters from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands to name a few, James and Jennifer made Cornwall proud once more by winning a trio of Silver 2nd place medals. An amazing result given that they've only recently graded up to the next belt level and James in particular, despite only being 14, was fighting youths of 16yrs old and more, almost double his build! Very good work James, speed and technique overcame opponents with greater body mass and power.�

Both Jennifer and her older brother James are now focusing hard on training for the Essex Karate Cup at the end of May along with the big one, the Tang Soo Do World Championships, taking place at the Olympic Village in London in August.�

James and Jennifer are passionate about Martial Art and avidly practise both Karate and Kickboxing, along with helping to teach/coach the younger classes. Both continue to demonstrate how commitment, determination, discipline and a single minded pursuit of your goals can lead to remarkable results and a consistent portfolio of success.�

The Academy has invested in GCSEPod, the award winning digital content and revision provider! Many of our Year 11 students are using this great tool, as part of their revision and preparation, for their upcoming GCSE exams.

GCSEPod provides over 6,000 3-5 minute bursts of visual learning ‘Pods’. It also maps out content that can help students with their revision and make it much more manageable, as it is presented in a logical way.
