New Structure

The Past Simple Tense Usage: We use " The Past Simple Tense" when we talk about something happened in the past .

Form: In the Past Simple Tense, verbs are regular or irregular. Regular verbs follow certain rules. Irregular verbs do not follow simple patterns or rules. To form the past tense of most regular verbs, just add –ed or –d. E.g.: walk – walked climb – climbed live – lived smile – smiled

To form the past tense of irregular verbs, do not add –ed or –d. the past tense have to be memorized.

E.g.: am / is - was are - were wake - woke run – ran come – came see – saw ring – rang say - said

Key Words: yesterday last ago in the past once upon a time

Examples : He looked at the clock two minutes ago . He jumped out of bed an hour ago . Tilly cleaned the room last week . I travelled to Alexandria last summer . Last week we were at the beach. Billy saw a very strange bird yesterday.

Adverbs: Adverbs describe the verbs : E.g.:

Billy stepped slowly in the shed . verb adverb We ask about adverbs by using "How"

How did Billy step in the shed ? Slowly.

The Past Simple Tense More irregular verbs to study: Negative: To make negative statements, use didn’t (did not) and the infinitive form of a verb. Examples:

The Aztecs didn't live in Africa . The books didn't have words in them, just pictures .

Yes / No questions : For yes / no questions, use did and the infinitive form of a verb.

Did + subject + v. (infinitive) ? Examples :

Did the Aztecs like gold and jewels ? Yes , they did .

Did the children help their mum ? No, they didn't .

Comparatives

To compare two things or two people we use a comparative adjective plus than to compare two things. To form the comparative of a short adjective add –er.

1- Short adjectives which end in "y" after a consonant, change "y" into "ier" :

The Future Tense with “going to” Usage: We use the future tense when we speak about something that is going to happen in the future .

Form: Affirmative

am is + going to + v. (infinitive) are

Examples: I’m going to do my homework. We’re going to play basketball. She’s going to stay at home.

Negative

am is + not + going to + v. (infinitive) are

Examples :

I am not going to travel next week . He isn't going to take his hat . They aren't going to spend their holiday in Cairo .

Question Am

Is + subject + going to + v. (infinitive)? Are

Examples:

Are you going to go to the theatre ? Is he going to leave tomorrow? Am I going to stay?

Why -----? Because + complete sentence ( subject + verb + object) We use the question word “Why” to ask about the reason of an action and we use “Because” to answer.

Punctuation Marks Capital letters :

1- At the beginning of the statement we write the first letter in capital. E.g.: She can ride a bike.

Question mark :
