    109th Nanka Yamaguchi Kenjinkai PicnicJune 22, 2014

    Our annual picnic and biggest event of the year was onceagain held at the private Elysian Park's Monticello LeoPoliti Picnic Ground on June 22. Picnic-goers enjoyedwonderful weather, great food and a day filled with funwith family and old friends.

    Our favorite

    taiko group,Kokoro Taiko,opened theprogram. Eachyear, theseyoung and tal-ented playerstravel from Long

    Beach and Orange County to entertain us. We sincerelyappreciate their dedication to our club.

    Mistress of Ceremonies, Aki Fukuhara-Vaughn, welcomedeveryone and introduced NYK President, Richard Fuku-hara, who gave a few words of welcome and officiallyopened the 109th Nanka Yamaguchi Kenjinkai picnic.

    Arlene Nakamura,Scholarship Chairperson, announcedthat there were no graduating high school seniors this yearand therefore no scholarships would be awarded. She wasassured by some members that there will be eligible sen-iors next year.

    Lunch was announced at 12:00 and for those who didntbring their own enjoyed oishii (delicious) pre-ordered bentolunches from Nijiya Marketin Torrance and complimentaryhot dogs grilled by Arturo Yoshimoto. Soft drinks, juicesand water were provided as well as sno-cones and azuki(sweet beans), perfectly cooked by Yoshiko Kishimoto andYasuko Katayama.

    3rd Quarter 2014

    After lunch, everyonegathered in the plazaarea for the traditionalmochi toss. This year,there were two piecesof paper with Yamaguchi hidden in two

    baggies and the luckypeople who caughtthem received Japa-

    nese crackers. Ondo followedand was led by dance captains,Yasuko Katayamaand YoshikoKishimoto. Arlene Nakamurathen taught guys and gals avery fun line dance.

    The microphone was then handed over to Patrick Seki,Karaoke MC, whoinvited our many talented members toentertain with Japanese and English songs. During theday, the Igawasisters, Miko Sanchezand Kaz Fong,treated the kiddies and adults to face painting.

    At the other side of the picnicgrounds, Trace Fukuhara,called the games that in-cluded races for the kodomotachi (children) from infantsto 13 years of age. Then kidsand seniors participated inthe atsui (hot) daikon andthe always popular waterballoon games.

    The raffle drawing closed out the day. A big thank you toFusako and Bruce Thompson for their generous donation;ABC Nursery in Gardena for donating boxes of beautifulplants; and to Millieand Steven Tani for donating juiceand soft drinks. Finally, a very special thanks to the manykawaii(cute) kids who helped draw the raffle tickets.

    In closing, Richard Fukuharathanked all who helped withthe picnic and invited everyone to come again next year!

    The Nanka Yamaguchi Kenjinkai will be the hosts for the4th Yamaguchi Kenjinkai World Grand Meeting. The pur-pose of the grand meeting is to gather Yamaguchi ken-

    jinkai partners to establish a mutual understanding be-tween the Yamaguchi prefecture and the kenjinkai.

    A VIP delegation from Yamaguchi, Japan and YamaguchiKenjinkai members from around the world are expected toattend and we are currently in the planning stages to ac-commodate the proposals received from Yamaguchi, Ja-pan.

    This major event will take place over 4 days and

    exact dates have not yet been finalized,

    but please keep your calendars

    open the first 3 weeks of November 2015.

    Yamaguchi, Japan hopes to promote Yamaguchi foods,culture, and tourism, encourage Youth Visit Exchange, andvisit local businesses.

    Congratulations, Edward SanchezThe mom of Edward Sanchez, Miko (Igawa), and his grand-parents, Kiyoshi andWakiko Igawa, are beaming withpride since Edward was named 2014 South Coast Confer-ence Mens Swimming Athlete of the Year. Sanchez, 19, abusiness major, has set school records in three separateindividual events: the 200-meter freestyle, the 200-meter

    butterfly, and the 200-meter individual medley. He wasrecruited to join the University of Santa Barbara mensswim team and will attend in the fall. Sanchez learned toswim at the age of one from his mom. He is obviously fol-lowing in the footsteps of his grandmother, Wakiko, whowas a competitive swimmer in Japan. ///
