The Celebration of Sacraments
Infant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registered parishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: RCIA is the process of growing in your faith and love of God. Weekly gather-ings take place from September until Easter. If you are interested in learning about Catholicism and joining us please call Deacon Tom at the rectory at Historic St. Patrick @ 419-243-6452. Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at IC, 9:30 a.m. at HSP and 10:30 a.m. IC every Sunday or by appointment.
Matrimony: Anyone planning to be married must contact the parish at least six months in advance. The exact date and time of your wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly or religiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage.
Pastoral Care of the Sick: When a parishioner is admitted to the hospital, nursing home, or confined to home because of age or infirmity, please call the Parish Office. Parishioners are ready to visit and to bring Holy Communion. When one is seriously ill, the healing Presence of the Lord should be requested in the Sacrament of the Sick.
Dear People of God,
I’ve been working on the bible, or at least how the church currently studies it. All of the analysis by whatever means is intended to give us a better grasp of meaning: what does God want us to get out of the words of the bible. Certainly, God wants everybody to get the same message so the way the various books are put together must convey a common field of meaning for people of diverse cultures, different languages, very different ways of thinking and with radically different histories. That’s no easy task yet the bible manages to do so because behind all of the forms, sources, words, groups there is the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. We can all understand the essential elements of what God has to say: I love you and hope you love me. That underlying sense of God’s love, God’s compassion, God’s mercy can be found in every book of the bible, from Genesis to Revelations. And, as Jesus tells us, the second element is like the first: We ought to love one another with the same compassion and mercy shown to any of us by God. Beyond that the Church makes use of the bible to better understand the richness of what we have become as God’s faith-filled people. Why do we have seven sacraments? The bible has the answer. Why do we celebrate Eucharist the way we do? The bible tells us. Why do we venerate the saints? The bible tells us. We Catholics have often been accused of avoiding the bible in favor of liturgy but liturgy is drawn from and makes use of the bible perhaps more than does any other human endeavor. Everything we do is in some way drawn from and dependent on the bible. Even the shortest of the Eucharistic Prayers is taken almost entirely from the bible, there are over 140 specific references to various books of the bible in that short prayer (you can find them on the internet, by the way, in an annotated Eucharistic Prayer)! That’s why as pastor I’m pleased that here in the parish we offer bible study so that any of us can come to a better understanding of what’s in the bible and how it affects our actions, prayer life, and even the future toward which we are moving as Christians. I would invite and even urge all of us to take time to learn more about the bible and the richness it has to offer. I mentioned last week that each of the gospels was written to address a specific problem going on in the community. I had hope to get to those this week but we’ll have to put them off for later.

Some have noticed that a few of the kneelers have been burnt! This is most likely from the heating pipes, and we would ask that you leave those kneelers down when you exit your pew. If there are any volunteers willing to help replace the covering on the damaged ones, please let Barb, Mary Jo, or TJ know. We would like to keep our church in good repair!

Fr. Chris has been working on a Sesquicentennial History of the parish. He has been inviting us all to bring in photos of First Communion, Confirmation and fun pictures from Little Christmas, parish festivals, the annual Mud Hens outing and more for a “family album.” The first two pastors are completed and examination copies of the history can be found in the vestibule on the display case and on the heater by the Maumee Street entrance. Please take a look and bring in your pictures for upcoming “family album” pages. Drop off pictures, we’ll scan them and return them to you in a day or two. Please don’t take home a copy so others can take a look as well. The completed book will be available in both black and white and full color, priced on printing costs of both version.
Sr. Frances Marie will again be selling coupon Books for Camp Catch a Rainbow. The books are $25.00. The camp is for children with cancer The books are available now thru February. See Sr. Frances Marie if you would like to purchase one or call the parish office at 419-243-1829.

Oral health problems in adults include the
following: Untreated tooth decay. More than 1 in
4 (27%) adults in the United States have untreat-
ed tooth decay. Gum disease. Nearly half (46%) of
all adults aged 30 years or older show signs of
gum disease; severe gum disease affects about
9% of adults. Tooth loss. Complete tooth loss
among adults aged 65-74 years has steadily de-
clined over <me, but dispari<es exist among some
popula<on groups. If le@ untreated, cavi<es
(tooth decay) and periodontal (gum) disease lead
to tooth loss. Oral cancer. Oral cancers are most
common in older adults, par<cularly in people
older than 55 years who smoke and are heavy
drinkers. People treated for cancer who have
chemotherapy may suffer from oral problems
such as painful mouth ulcers, impaired taste, and
dry mouth. To be connued next week…

Poinsettia rescue! We have admired our beautiful altar that has been decorated with the flowers from Strains Market. Thanks to TJ for seeing that they were arranged so beautifully. However, the time has come for them to be adopted, and since so many of you contribut-ed to the Christmas flower fund, we thought you might be interested in giving a flower a home! Af-ter the masses this weekend, please feel free to take a flower…or two! They will be placed on the steps to the altar, and any of those are available. If there are still some on the altar, PLEASE do not take them! Thanks for your help!

commitment as a community and our desire to continue our mission. I am grateful to each of you for your offering, but this is more about our concern for each other and our
parish. You have helped each other through your collective sacrifice. As we build our faith we must now
implement the appropriate actions to build our parish. This report provides you a brief summary of the results from
our program and we will follow up with additional reporting periodically in the future. May the Lord’s
blessing be on you and your family. In Christ, Rev. Msgr. Christopher P. Vasko, VJ, VF Pastor Immaculate

Program we’re encouraging. Almost 31% of the parishioners who gave to the Sunday offertory in the last year made a commitment for the next year. We also had 6 families newly identify themselves as active supporters of
our church. Overall, the commitments reflect a 55% increase in the offertory over previous donations from
those that responded with a commitment card. Please – it is important that parishioners maintain these commitments throughout the year, so that our church is able to continue
its mission.
