About the AuthorCarrie Toth has been teaching high school Spanish

since 1994 in rural, southern Illinois. She is a NationalBoard Certified Teacher in World Languages other thanEnglish and has a Master’s degree in Spanish Education.

In 2011, Carrie was named Horace Mann, IllinoisPrincipals’ Association Innovative Educator and in 2013,Illinois Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages Tea-cher of the Year. In 2014, she was named Central StatesConference on Teaching of Foreign Languages Teacher ofthe Year becoming a finalist for the National Teacher ofthe Year. In 2017, Carrie became a National GeographicCertified Educator and she enjoys creating cross curricu-lar units that immerse students in geography, science, andservice learning.

Abro los ojos pero la luz es intensa. No puedo tolerarla luz.

Abro los ojos de nuevo y veo que hay dos personasen mi cuarto. Una es un doctor y la otra parece un poli-cía.

– ¿Dón… Dónde estoy? –les pregunto.

– Está en el Hospital Abel Gilbert en Guayaquil,Ecuador –me responde el doctor.

– ¿En el hospital? –estoy confundida. ¿Por quéestoy en el hospital? De repente, lo sé todo...me da pánico–. ¡Alex! ¿Y Harry? ¿Dónde estánAlex y Harry?

las vacaciones de diciembre–. ¿Estás haciendola tarea? ¡Eres un ratón de biblioteca!

– No lo soy –le respondí–. Necesito una A enesta clase si quiero trabajar con el Dr. Riera enjunio, y quiero ese trabajo.

– Está bien, pero en este momento todos vamosa la sesión con el Dr. Riera… Ratón…

Me levanté y me fui con mi amigo. Caminamos alvestíbulo del hotel donde encontramos a los otros estu-diantes de la clase. Había 15 en total, 8 muchachos y 6muchachas más el profesor. Íbamos a pasar dos semanasen las Islas Galápagos tomando una clase que se llamaba‘Biología, las Galápagos y Darwin’. Íbamos a estudiar eltrabajo del famoso científico, Charles Darwin.

Entramos al cuarto donde íbamos a reunirnos todaslas noches y sonreí pensando en las preciosas islas. Mehabía enamorado1 de las islas desde el momento en quellegué al aeropuerto. El agua era de un color turquesa in-creíble. Había más animales marinos de los que habíavisto en toda mi vida. Estar aquí era como estar en unsueño.

Nos sentamos cuando el profesor entró con doshombres.

– Como saben –nos explicó el profesor–, yo soyde Ecuador pero no soy de las islas, y por esono puedo ser su guía. Solo la gente que vive enlas islas puede ser un guía oficial y solo losguías oficiales pueden hacer tours. Durante lasdos semanas que estemos aquí, nuestro guíaJavier nos va a llevar a diferentes islas y nos vaa ayudar a buscar los animales como los quevio Darwin.

Javier sonrió y nos dijo:

– Hola y bienvenidos a las islas. Es un placer sersu guía.

– ¡Hola Javier! –le gritamos todos.

– También quiero presentarles a Harry –continuóel profesor–. Harry es el hermano de Javier yquiere ser un guía. Va a ayudar a su hermano.

– ¡Hola Harry! –le dijimos entusiasmados.

Harry, que era tan joven como nosotros, se sonrojóy nos dijo:

About the AuthorCarrie Toth has been teaching high school Spanish

since 1994 in rural, southern Illinois. She is a NationalBoard Certified Teacher in World Languages other thanEnglish and has a Master’s degree in Spanish Education.

In 2011, Carrie was named Horace Mann, IllinoisPrincipals’ Association Innovative Educator and in 2013,Illinois Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages Tea-cher of the Year. In 2014, she was named Central StatesConference on Teaching of Foreign Languages Teacher ofthe Year becoming a finalist for the National Teacher ofthe Year. – Sí, estoy estudiando –le respondí–. Necesitouna A en esta clase si quiero que me aceptenpara el trabajo con el Dr. Riera en junio. Yquiero ese trabajo.

– Está bien pero en este momento, todos vamosa ir a la sesión del Dr. Riera…

Me fui con mi amigo. Caminamos al lobby del hoteldonde nos encontramos con los otros estudiantes de laclase. Había 15 en total, 8 muchachos, 6 muchachas másel profesor. Íbamos a pasar 15 días en las Islas Galápagosestudiando ‘biología, las Galápagos y el trabajo de Dar-win’. Íbamos a estudiar el trabajo del científico más fa-moso del planeta, Charles Darwin.

Cuando llegué al aeropuerto y vi las islas, me fasci-naron inmediatamente. El agua era de color turquesa yhabía numerosos animales marinos. Era increíble tenerla oportunidad de estudiar en las Galápagos.

El profesor entró con dos muchachos.

– Como saben –nos explicó el profesor–, yo vivoen Ecuador, pero no vivo en las islas. Nopuedo ser su guía por eso. Solo los habitantesde las islas pueden ser guías oficiales y solo losguías oficiales pueden hacer tours. Duranteesta clase, nuestro guía, Javier, nos va a llevar adiferentes islas y nos va a ayudar a buscar losanimales que estudió Darwin.

Javier nos dijo:

– Hola. Es un placer ser su guía.

– ¡Hola, Javier! –le gritamos todos.

– También quiero presentarles a Harry –continuóel profesor–. Harry es el hermano de Javier yquiere ser guía. Va a ayudar a su hermano.
