The Beginning of the End of 2015!

As I write this article I cannot help but think of the classic 1993 Bill Murray movie

‘Groundhog Day’ (well, I think it is a classic movie)! It is hard to fathom that another year

has passed so quickly and we are in the throes of finalising the 2015 academic year! I think

that there are a number of aspects one can ponder in relation to the speed of the year but

I do believe that it is a reflection of a fulsome and positive educational offering which keeps

students, staff and the College community actively and constructively involved with their

respective educational journeys! In the days ahead we will formally close the 2015 school

year at our Annual Prize-Giving and Speech Day ceremonies next Wednesday, 9 December.

On Tuesday, 1 December I enjoyed attending the dinner to mark the end of Year 6 with the

Year 6 students and their teachers. The students had clearly gone to some effort to prepare

for this event and I thought all of them looked fantastic at the dinner! It is amazing how

quickly they grow up and every student looked amazing and very much ready to take on the

challenges of the Senior School!

I take this opportunity to congratulate all Year 6 students on reaching the milestone of

formally completing their primary schooling. They are a talented group and have done

particularly well in many areas at the College. All going well they are set to achieve great

results next year and beyond in the Senior School!

My special thanks goes to Ms Melanie Routledge, Mrs Mez Moffatt and Mr Chris O’Loan for

their work in organising the dinner for Year 6! The catering was provided by Ms Kate Millan

and a small team of very capable Senior School students – thank you to the catering team!

And thanks also to the many parents who worked behind the scenes to make the night so

memorable – the MPH once again looked fantastic and assured that this important

gathering was very special for our students

On Saturday, 21 November over 300 people gathered at the Year 12 Graduation Dinner at

the Albury Convention Centre. The gathering was a particularly happy celebration with all

of this year’s graduating class presenting beautifully to mark this important milestone in

their educational journeys! Members of the Year 12 class looked fantastic and once again,

ensured that the dinner to celebrate their time at the College was conducted with dignity,

respect and genuine delight! Well done to all of our Year 12 students – the Graduation

Dinner is such an important event! Special thanks must go to Mr Malcolm Thomas, Head of

Senior School for the organisation of this important gathering! Thanks also to Mrs Kaz

Gehrig for her assistance with the organisation, and the Year 12 Pastoral Care Tutors – Ms

Armstrong, Mr Fagan and Mrs Bradbury for their work leading up to and during the dinner.

Principal’s Awards

At the End of Term Assemblies, I had the great pleasure of presenting a good number of

Principal’s Awards to students in the Junior School at both campuses. It is a most significant

achievement for any student to achieve a Principal’s Award and this comes only through a

lot of dedication and consistency in a number of areas across the entire year. I am pleased

Staffing Update

Recently I received the resignation of Mrs Gai Liley, who joined the College as a part time

teacher in the Junior School a few years ago. Mrs Liley has decided that it is time to pursue

some new professional challenges and has accepted a teaching role at The Scots School,

Albury. I take this time to thank her for the great work she has done during her time at

Trinity and wish her all the very best as she chases the next set of professional challenges

and opportunities!

Earlier this term Ms Karla Wise-Chalker tendered her resignation after being offered and

accepting a position at Xavier High School from the beginning of next year. Karla has been

on staff at Trinity for ten years and has contributed to the growth of the College across many

areas. I wish her all the very best as she takes up the challenge of relocating to a new school.


I am pleased to announce that I have appointed Ms Narelle Lethlean to take up the position

teaching English and Humanities left vacant after Karla’s resignation. Narelle is known to

the College community via teacher placements and regular casual work and is looking

forward to contributing to the College on a more regular basis from the beginning of next

year.

I am talking with a few people about the part-time role which has now become available

following Mrs Liley’s resignation and hope to announce the details of the replacement

teacher to the College community soon.

2015 has been another really busy and productive year. I have been really encouraged by

the achievements and growth that I have witnessed in so many students during the year.

I hope and pray that all members of the Trinity community enjoy a happy and holy Christmas and a well-deserved and restful summer holiday. It is a wonderful time of the year to enjoy the company of family and friends and to give thanks for all that we have and share with these important people.


At assemblies this week I asked students to remember the real message of Christmas -

amongst the enjoyment of giving and receiving presents with family and friends! I hope that

all students will develop an appreciation of the important aspects of Christmas and that

they might say a prayer of thanks for all that they enjoy in their lives, as well as the gift of

the Lord Jesus Christ at Christmas!

I offer the following Irish blessings at Christmas for the entire Trinity community:

The light of the Christmas star to you,

The warmth of home and hearth to you,

The cheer and good will of friends to you,

The hope of a childlike heart to you,

As I write my final piece for the College newsletter, I want to remind you of standing up for

it is right. The Bible is crammed full of examples of God’s people standing up for things they

know to be right. Other people often disagreed with their convictions, and sometimes made

life hard for them because of it. The religious authorities weren’t too excited about Jesus’

convictions either.

Mary choosing to follow God’s will to be the mother of Jesus was making a stand. Choosing

to follow God and make a stand for something we know is right by God can be tough,

especially when we know it might not go down well with those around us.

By making the decision, Mary risked everything. Her status, her honour, even her life. But

she accepted God’s will for her life because she knew it was the right thing to do. God

honoured Mary and her willingness to submit to God and glorify Him. Proverbs 3:5 says:

‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding’.

Really, though, God always goes ahead of you even when you can’t see the path. 2

Corinthians 5:7 still stands: ‘… we live by faith, not by sight’.

I thank the entire Trinity Community for your support and your prayers for the work of the

Gospel that continues. Also I thank God for the appointment of Rev. Bryn as he continues

to labour among you sharing the love of God in Jesus. I want to also thank Mr. O’Connor

and the Council of Trinity who enabled me to be a part of the life of the school for the past

four years. Be assured that I will remember you in prayer.

This Christmas, remember to remain in Christ Jesus, and stand for Him. May your families

enjoy a happy and holy Christmas season.

AAS Testing Results: Years 4, 6 and 8

Students in Years 4, 6 and 8 completed the AAS testing last term. At the College, we have

revised our baseline testing regime; this year, Academic Assessment Services (AAS) has

conducted diagnostic testing for students in Years 4, 6, 8 and 10. This new set of tests has

provided us with a very rich set of data that will assist us to pinpoint student need, track

student progress, and, when students are in Year 10, provide targeted information that will

assist students undertake subject selections. The results of this set of tests should have

been received by all parents.

For students who were absent on the initial testing date, there will be a set of catch-up tests

conducted in the very early days of Term 1, 2016.

Semester 2 Reports – Prep – Year 10

As the year draws to its academic close, I am very much looking forward to the celebrations

of achievement that take place across the Speech Day assemblies. In this forum, academic

excellence is rewarded as we recognise the fruits of hard work.

There are, of course, other forums through which we recognise excellence and

commitment. On the last day of the academic year, students will receive their Semester 2

report to take home to parents and caregivers. These reports, too, contain a celebration of

effort. A heartfelt congratulation is extended to all those who, through hard work,

dedication and a determination to do their best, have improved their academic

performance.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all families a peaceful and happy holiday period,

and look forward to seeing the students return, with vigour renewed, in the new year. I am

sure that it holds many fine things for the College and our students.

Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program

Congratulations to Georgia Dulhunty and Matthew Forrest who have been selected to

participate in the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program for 2016. The program runs

through the University of Melbourne and offers high achieving students the opportunity to

engage with the University through a program of events and activities. Over 1,800

applications were received by the University of Melbourne for the 2016 program. Well done

Georgia and Matthew!

House Carols Competition

The move from four to six Houses has been completed and this Friday we have the first of

our expanded House events. Each of the Houses have been practising for the carols that

will bring all students from both campuses together. Last week the House Captains travelled

to the Wodonga Campus to meet with the students in their houses and have a run through

their carol. It has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm of our students as they prepare for

the competition. Good luck to all Houses this Friday.

Holidays

As the 2015 school year draws to a close I would like to take the opportunity to wish

everyone a happy and Holy Christmas. Every year is very busy at school and everyone is

ready for a well-earned break from their studies. Students need to relax, spend time with

their families and look forward to 2016 when we move into our Senior School building and

embark on our BYODD program. Merry Christmas!

Resilience

One of the great joys about working with children is the fact that every day brings change

and new challenges. The individual needs of every learner can change at various times and

it is a part of our charter to focus on all aspects of learning. One aspect that is often raised

is the resilience of students. Their ability to bounce back. This is such an important aspect

of learning and life as it allows every student to take up a challenge, even though success is

not guaranteed, and to learn much from the journey.

We often marvel at the success of individuals, but should always be aware that it is often

their persistence, their willingness to bounce back from failures that has ensured their

ultimate success. That is not normally fame or fortune, but gaining deep understanding of

their true self. I have been fortunate enough to listen to many speakers over the past 10

years who related their ‘secret’ for success to students who were heading on a new part of

their journey. The over-riding theme is patience and fortitude. Learning from

disappointments and appointments. This is probably why we, as teachers and parents, must

continue to recognise and reward effort, celebrate success and enhance the skills of

resilience.

Excitement

There is true joy to be found every day. Yes, it is busy and we may appear to be frantic as

we speed through a myriad of assemblies, celebrations, farewells, parties and functions, at

this time. This is also a time where we all bear witness to a great adventure, a new beginning,

and this should take the prime place in our thoughts.

With students I often talk about the fragile nature of excitement. We should nurture the

excitement and take care of it, as it is precious. So, as we approach the next few days

together, give yourself time to be excited, to reflect on the friendships, the good times and

the growth that has occurred. Also take time to reflect on the birth. The birth of new ideas,

new friendships and new experiences. Give thanks for all our blessings and bear in mind and

prayer those that are not so blessed.

As this is the final newsletter for 2014 I thank the staff, students and support staff for a

wonderful Year. There have been many events and experiences that have been celebrated.

I hope you all have a peaceful and festive time over the holidays and look forward to seeing

all those smiling faces next January.

Classroom helpers

Many parents have been supporting the learning environment in a direct way by helping

staff in classrooms, with excursions, on camps and in the co-curricular program. Again this

is much appreciated by students and staff as many of the activities are enriched by the

presence of these willing and, always, enthusiastic people. We live in very busy times for

families with lots of call on our time so it is wonderful to witness the commitment that these

helpers make to the children’s learning.

Another year has come and gone, and it has been ‘action packed’ from Day 1. Thanks to

everyone who assisted to make the year run smoothly – staff, parents and students – and it

continues to amaze me just how much we can achieve through co-operation and teamwork

throughout the staff, parent and student body.

Step Up Day

We enjoyed a very successful Step-Up/Orientation Day recently, and thanks to everyone for

the extra efforts in welcoming our new students. We have a good spread of new faces

throughout all classes next year, and numbers have increased. Hence, we particularly

welcome Tanya Carroll to our staff and she will teach the Year 5 class.

Stationery for next year

All students will have received their Text Book forms for next year. Don’t forget to go onto

the Yorke Website (www.yorkebooks.com.au) as soon as you are able, to ensure that books

are delivered to the School by the start of 2017. Remember that you only need to order Text

Books – other stationery has been ordered and will arrive at the school shortly.

Volunteers

Thanks again for all the time given by the wonderful Hot Lunch Helpers, who provided

students with a Baked Potato Day last week. The parent helper numbers are so many that

it is impossible to thank them individually. This year has been exceptional for the

helpers/volunteers from right across the school, and my personal thanks and the thanks of

the school community to those who have so willingly given their time for this purpose.

Teachers are very grateful for having someone else to assist with a wide range of tasks. I

hope our wonderful volunteers enjoyed the opportunity to share in morning tea last week,

and thanks to the efforts of Kerrie Wheeler in arranging that.

Buddies Program

The Buddies Program plays an important role in the teaching of responsibility to the senior

students, and further, provides an excellent way of learning to put the needs of others

ahead of our own. The Year 5/6 class was ‘buddied’ with the Prep and Year 1 students and

throughout the year the students enthusiastically participated in activities that focused on

learning and personal growth. The younger students were comforted and overjoyed to find

their buddy ready and willing to help them in and outside the classroom.

Unveiling of the NAIDOC artwork

Following on a visit to Wonga Wetlands for NAIDOC week, where students learnt about the

art and culture of our Aboriginal people, each class was asked to create a piece of art to tell

a story about what the students had learned. The results were stunning – vibrant colours

and wonderful patters – in a pictorial story created by each class. Our creative and talented

staff guided the students in their work, assisted by some artistic and willing parents. The

end result has exceeded expectations, and we look forward to having the work hang

permanently in the Campus Hall.

Book Club & Fair

Thanks to all those who have generously supported our Book Club and Book Fairs this year.

Your purchases help the school to buy much needed books to increase the reading resources

available to our students.

Success of After School Sport and Cooking & Gardening Program

Our after school co-curricular activities – Sport and the Cooking & Gardening program –

have been enthusiastically undertaken and well supported. Thanks to our teachers for their

efforts in both of these activities, and I know that the students have benefitted from these

and other activities which have kept us all active. Both these programs will continue in 2016.

Thanks and Farewell

Participation in the fortnightly Chapel Service is a very important part of student spiritual

development, with time spent learning the messages of the scriptures and getting to know

Jesus.

The importance and true meaning of Christmas was emphasised when the Prep class

presented the Nativity. Student gave presents for the Anglican ‘Christmas Giving Tree’, and

thanks to the SRC for this initiative.

The Campus thanks Rev Lee for his enthusiasm, leadership and dedication to our students

and we wish him and his family every success as he takes up his appointment as Chaplain of

the Hutchins School in Hobart, Tasmania.

Basketball and Netball Grand Finals Good luck to all teams that are taking to the court this weekend in their netball or basketball grand final. The College is well represented in both sports and this is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our students to their team and the College. A reminder to all students to take the time to thank their coach for the opportunities they have provided to them throughout the year. Also, to the families who have offered their support throughout the year, coaching, managing a team, scoring or cheering from the sideline.

College Team uniforms All students have been informed that they are required to return their College team uniform before the end of the year. It is an arduous job collecting these items and we would appreciate the support of all families in this matter. The College still has a range of outstanding uniform items owing and I encourage families to also return these to the College uniform shop. If your child is playing this weekend, their coach has been asked to collect and return to the uniform shop on your behalf. If this is not the case, all singlets are due by the last day of the academic year, Wednesday, 9 December.

Basketball singlet deposits will only be returned to those students who have indicated they will not be returning in the New Year. Mrs Katsoolis will manage this process. Returning players will not be expected to pay their singlet deposit again in 2016. Thank you Finally, thank you! As with each year at the College, the current year surpasses the previous as being bigger and better. Throughout 2015, we were proudly represented by approximately 40 sporting teams participating in a variety of interschool sporting events. Weekly, the College was represented by 350 students playing in local sporting competitions. Trinity teams and students are fortunate to be provided with these opportunities through the commitment of College staff and families, and I would thank each one on behalf of the College community. Their commitment, passion and leadership instils a sense of comradery amongst the fortunate students they work with. As a result, our students benefit, with skills and experiences invaluable for their development. Trinity’s co-curricular program has continued to develop to provide unique and enriching opportunities for all students in music, drama, leadership opportunities, numerous sports and public speaking opportunities. The enthusiasm and support of the whole Trinity Community has been fantastic and on behalf of the College, we thank you, and hope that you have a great Christmas and New Year!

The Mighty Year Threes take on the Great Aussie Holiday Park

On Monday, 9 November, the mighty Year 3s travelled a long distance to the Great

Aussie Holiday Park, to work on our getting along skills and to have fun. (Tara)

We also had to test our might and survival skills. (Harry P)

First I did archery. I was the first person to pop the balloon. I loved it! (Charlotte)

Another activity we did was orienteering. We finished last but it didn’t really matter.

Our group found it difficult to find the goats. (Ronan)

We also did low ropes. I really loved the Tarzan activity. While I was swinging I sang

“I came in like a wrecking ball.” It was awesome. (Archie)

One of my favourite activities was definitely rock climbing. At the tippy top there was

a bell and I rang it! The wall was as tall as a giant and lifting yourself up was as hard

as finding a needle in a haystack. (Antoinette)

Finally I went on the Flying Fox. It was my first time on it. It didn’t look scary but when

I climbed the ladder it was freaky. (Harry M)

The ladder was taller than a giraffe. (Adam)

Ziplining down was soooo fun. I felt like a bird. (Paige)

The best part was hanging out with my friends. (Georgia)

It was the most fun, most breathtaking, unforgettable day of the year. (Zoey)

Year 3 Outdoor Experience Report


Trinity is celebrating the annual ‘Science Week’ activities during weeks 7 and 8 this term.

Students have thoroughly enjoyed the activities with Mr Muir, Ms Fleming and Mr Larsen.

It has also been a special time for the junior classes who don’t normally visit the Labs to see

what goes on during a Science class. All junior students have loved wearing lab coats and

safety glasses.

Kindergarten to Year 2 took part in a ‘Purple Bean Growing Competition’, commencing in

Week 2 and 3.

Year 2: Learnt how to make a ‘Lava Lamp’

Year 3: Learnt about the Bernoulli’s principal of air flow and enjoyed watching

chemical reactions

Year 4: Had a wonderful time ‘Can Crushing’

Year 5: Made a wonderful ‘Rainbow’ of different chemicals in a measuring

cylinder

Year 6: Made polymer balls and learnt that accuracy is everything in the world

of Chemistry

Year 7: Made ‘amazing’ Match Stick Rockets

Year 9: Learnt about propulsion creating chemical rockets

Year 10: Made smoke flares to be used in an emergency!

All students welcomed the old favourite of activities using Dry Ice seriously cool at -78-80

degrees Celsius.

Another highlight of Week 7, was K- 6’s inaugural ‘Paper Plane Challenge’ which was

conducted in the Multi-Purpose Hall where the planes distance was able to be measured

accurately with no cross winds or bright sunlight shining in our pilots eyes.
