FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

I recently had a discussion with a friend who is having a very difficult time with the Church. In light of every-thing that we are hearing from the Pennsylvania Report, and what we will undoubtedly hear as archdioceses and dioceses begin to release the attorneys general reports in their specific places, it’s going to be stomach punch after stomach punch to the Catholic community. And while our conversation began with this as a springboard, it also became very evident that there are some serious doctrinal errors floating around that has caused a certain disap-pointment and disenchantment with the Church, but it is now being fueled by ignorance of the faith and an in-creasing relativism among the faithful and clergy.

As our conversation progressed, my friend (with more than twelve years of Catholic education) revealed more about what she doesn’t know about the faith than what she knows about it. Unfortunately, she sees a lot of “spin” on the explanations of doctrine in the Catechism and even more rigidity in the teachings of the Church when we speak of human dignity and the human person. Difficult questions arise all the time, but this seemingly casual con-versation turned into something that was challenging and disturbing.

A lot has happened in our Church since the Second Vatican Council concluded in 1965. There has been a whole rediscovery of our identity as Church, and some things were lost along the way. I’ve often heard the Council blamed for a lack of clarity regarding Church teachings, when, in fact, greater clarity was given to us through the powerhouses of Saint John Paul II and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. I’ve heard people whose entire religious for-mation was given to them through the Baltimore Catechism who, although they quote it well, have no understanding of what they’re quoting. And then there are those who did in their day what some do today—go to class and retain nothing.

Such is the case with my friend. She studied the faith as an academic re-quirement but with little to no acceptance of what the faith really means. In some ways, she, like many others, will contest that there are absolute truths, that there is a moral standard by which we are called to live (which, by not living up to that standard by some, has brought us to the crisis we now face), that circumstances should dictate what is right and what is wrong. Admittedly as a confessor, I sometimes need to hear more of the story that led to a particular sin in order to discern if it is serious or not, but there are absolute truths, moral stand-ards, and guideposts to help us to live as Christ wants us to live. There are times when even I question circum-stances, but the foundational principles given to us by Christ remain constant and secure. There are even times when it’s easy to doubt faith or the Church or the institution. But we can’t live in the doubt—we have to wrestle with what will ultimately bring us to the truth—that truth which is found in our Church.

And so, why do I raise all of this? Wouldn’t it be much easier to allow a personal conversation to remain where it is? No! I think for us to truly and honestly acknowledge the difficulties we face in the Church, we have to struggle with something much more foundational than which catechism to use, what spiritual guru to follow, or what kind of wine to use for the Eucharist. I think we have to start, yet again, with Jesus Christ. What were His teachings and why were they so radical for those who first heard them? What was it about Him that caused such ire among the religious leaders and such acclamation among those who needed to hear His message of freedom and reconcilia-tion and love? What does that message have to do with us today?

I think for my friend (and perhaps for me too, sometimes), it’s about getting back to what the Master taught. It’s about the message of the kingdom of God, not my own fiefdom. It’s about listening to Christ, embracing the radi-cal change to which He calls us, and to do everything in our power to be faithful to Him. Maybe in the long run, it’s about putting aside the anger and rediscovering the love that Christ brings which we have sometimes betrayed in our following of Him.

Until next week...God bless! Father Joe

Church Tours

Do you know the “story” of our parish? Perhaps there are some names you’ve heard as long-time parishioners, but did you know that some of our founding members are still members of our community? Did you ever wonder about the spelling of our church’s name—especially if we were named after Saint Catherine of Siena? Well, these tidbits, as well as our patrimony, the signs and symbols that surround us, and the items common to every Catholic church will be discussed in the monthly tours of our church. Each month (except during Advent and Lent), we will offer a tour on a Sunday afternoon from 2:00-3:30 p.m. and de-scribe where many of the things you see in our church came from, the significance of religious articles you will see in our church, the story of icons, windows, and liturgical ap-pointments. Join Father Joe for our first tour which will take place on Sunday, October 14th from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Perhaps you’ll plan to join us for either this gathering or any one of a num-ber to follow in our Jubilee Year. Space for each tour is lim-ited, so please call the office at 603.882.7793 to register for the October 14th tour. A tour geared for younger children will be offered at separate times.

Jubilee Gala Dinner-Dance

Get your dancing shoes out and dust off those tuxes and gowns and be ready to go! (Really—business dress is per-fectly acceptable!) Plan now to join us for our Jubilee Gala Dinner-Dance on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Radisson in Nashua. The members of our social committee are working diligent-ly to ensure an evening of great food, beautiful dancing, reminiscing, dreaming, and reconnecting with parishioners. More details will follow in the coming months, but we want you to set the date aside for a magical evening. We are “Saint Kathryn Strong.” Let’s make this Jubilee Year some-thing that we can talk about for years!

Jubilee Commemoratives

Jubilee commemorative polo shirts are still available through the parish office and religious goods store. We have a variety of colors and sizes. Small, medium, large, and extra large are $25.00 per shirt; XXL is $27.00 per shirt. The Jubilee Rosaries are also going strong. Please remem-ber that these rosaries will only be available for purchase for another year, so if you want to order a Jubilee Rosary, you must do so before September 2019. The polo shirts are first quality shirts and embroidered by one of our parishioners, so you know they will last forever. The rosaries, also made by a parishioner, are of better quali-ty than commercially made product.

Fifty Hours of Adoration

In preparation for the opening of our Jubilee Year, we will mark “Fifty Hours of Adoration” leading up to the actual date of our founding, October 4th. As we call upon the Lord who is the leader and focus of our life as a community, please join us in prayer by signing up for an hour or two during these ten days. Pray for our par-ish, for the universal Church, for friends and family mem-bers, for those who have left the Church, for those in the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life, for those dis-cerning a vocation, for our beloved dead, or for any one of your personal intentions. Sign ups are taking place in the back of the church, and ad-oration will begin on Monday, September 24th. Hours of adoration will be: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 2:00-6:00 p.m. Wednesday: 5:30-8:15 a.m. and 1:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday: 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Sunday: 12:00-4:00 p.m. Add your prayers to those of your fellow parishioners. Grace upon grace will flow upon our parish during this year.

Jubilee Art Exhibit

As a part of our Jubilee celebrations, we are pleased to announce the first art exhibit by members of the Saint Kathryn community. We are blessed to have fine photogra-phers and painters in our community

and this is a perfect opportunity for us to admire their work and celebrate the “Epiphanies of Beauty.” Join us on Sunday, October 21st, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. in the parish hall and enjoy the work of our parishioners. See the beauty of creation through the eyes of our artists!

Jubilee Photo Directory Update

The photographers from LifeTouch will be us again on Oc-tober 4, 5, and 6. There are still some openings available if you have not yet had the time to have your picture taken for the Jubilee Directory. Those who have had the experience have already noted how efficient and helpful the photographers have been. And there is no pressure to purchase additional portraits. While they are with us to “up sell,” there is no requirement to do anything other than accept the free portrait. Show your pride in being a member of Saint Kathryn’s—especially in this Jubilee publication. Imagine if every regis-tered parishioner were included! We would have a complete “picture” of our parish for the sake of posterity! Sign up today—either on the parish website or at the table in the rear of the church—and help us to fill this directory with the real Saint Kathryn’s—namely, each and every one of you! Remember—everyone who is pictured in the directory re-ceives a free portrait and commemorative book! Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity!

THE TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Crafters

Are you one of those gifted people who can look at some-thing and see it’s potential? Maybe you’re not one of those people, but you’d like to develop an eye for such things? Join the Crafters any Tuesday between 1:00 and 8:30 p.m. in the Craft Room in the lower level of the office building and get in touch with your creative side!

Bazaar Raffle Tickets

Envelopes containing tickets for our 25th annual bazaar and penny sale grand prizes are available in the vestibule win-dowsills this weekend. Please pick up an envelope (or two, or three, or four) and sell as many tickets as you can. The “ante” is upped this year as we celebrate our Golden Jubilee and 25 years of bazaars. The more tickets that you sell in-creases your chance of winning. So get out there and sell, sell, sell! And don’t forget to buy a few tickets for yourself! You have to be “in it to win it!”

Speaking of the Bazaar

Now is a great time to purchase gifts for our annual Penny Sale at the Bazaar. It’s because of your generosity and crea-tivity that our Penny Sale has been a huge success for these last 24 years. How about if we make the 25th even bigger and better? All kinds of sales are taking place now and leading up to Columbus Day. Would you consider picking up a gift or two and donating it to the parish? Toys, kitchenware, bric-a-brac—you name it! Please, just make sure it’s new! (Used items can be accepted for a yard sale at another time.) The Bazaar will take place this year on Saturday, November 10th and Sunday, November 11th in our parish center. What’s in store for this year? Magnificent crafts made by our Crafters Group, baked goods that surpass any NY or Boston bakery, beautiful items from our religious goods store, raffles, monetary grand prizes, an amazing kitchen, and, of course, Santa Claus! We’re hoping to raise $50k for our 50th anniversary to help us repair and replace a part of our HVAC system and per-haps to install tile floors in the classrooms.

Italian Night Dinner

Tickets are now available for the Knights of Columbus Council 5162 annual Italian Night Dinner celebration being held on Saturday, October 20th. Tickets are $12.50 for adults and $6.00 for children under 12 years old. Members will start selling tickets after the 4pm Mass this weekend. For the first time in 3 years, members will be selling "Keep Christ In Christmas" car magnets for $5.00 each. Great fam-ily gifts - every car should have one.

Saint Kathryn Religious Goods

We are definitely gearing up for the Bazaar and the Christ-mas season and so should you! There are hundreds of simp-ly excellent gift choices right here on campus. Gifts for oth-ers but also a gift for yourself - because you know you de-serve one!!

RCIA

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a pro-cess for those who have never been baptized and are seek-ing full initiation in the Church. It is also adapted for mem-bers of other Christian communities who want to enter the Church or for Catholics who were baptized but never re-ceived Eucharist or Confirmation. A further adaptation is for children between the ages of 7 and 17. Are you interested in learning more about our faith? Is life in the Catholic Church going to enrich your relationship with God. For more information about topics, class times, and the process in general, please contact Deacon Ray at 603.882.7793. Classes are held on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Room 1. The first step is to come to a meeting. We’ll happily help you through the rest.

The Clarion Call to Arms

In 2017, the Church in Poland gathered around the borders of their country to light a spiritual flame, a flame that quick-ly engulfed the nation in prayer and reparation. Shortly af-ter, others followed their lead in Ireland, the British Isles and now, the United States. This is a WORLD WIDE EF-FORT. Join with many others across the United States on October 7th at 4:00 p.m. in praying the Rosary to counteract the challenges of secularism in our world and to restore a sense of the dignity of all human life from conception until natural death. For more information, please contact Vilma Zuliani at 603.595.7122.

Servers for Vespers

We are in need of 2-4 servers to assist us at Vespers on Wednesday evenings and on the Sundays of Advent and Lent. We are hoping to schedule a server once every 4-6 weeks on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. and perhaps one Sunday for Advent and Lenten Vespers at 4:00 p.m. Training will be given. For more information, please con-tact Father Joe at [email protected].

Eyeglasses Recycled

Do you have unused eyeglasses lying around? Don’t know what to do with them? Declutter and donate eyeglasses to the Hudson Lions. A box has been placed in the entrance to Saint Kathryn’s. Eyeglasses will be sent to those who other-wise would not have their vision corrected with eyeglass-es. Have questions? Contact [email protected].

Adult Faith Formation

This fall, our adult faith formation series will be a study on the Gospel according to Saint Mark produced by the Augus-tine Institute. Join us on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until noon or from 7:45 to 9:15 p.m. in the parish hall for an in-depth study of this first gospel. Study guides for those who would like to purchase them are $25.00 per book (not necessary for class participation). An offering will be taken up during the first and second weeks of class to assist us with the purchase of refreshments. For more information, contact Father Joe at [email protected].
