COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Operative Dentistry III is the semester course that allows the student to diagnose, plan and

treat from a esthetic point of view, patients of all ages and conditions with the corresponding

sequential and integrated restorative procedures.

2. Contextualization of the content and skills of the subject.

Operative Dentistry is one of the branches of dentistry that deals with the art and science of

the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and prognosis of diseases or trauma to teeth. Operative

Dentistry deals with the treatment of missing or malformed portions of teeth caused by tooth

decay (caries), trauma, discoloration or unusual development, as well as the replacement or

repair of existing restorations. Treatment should restore proper tooth morphology, function,

esthetics and harmonious relationship with the surrounding tissues.

Nowadays Operative Dentistry is based on the minimally invasive and biomimetic principals.

Therefore, the materials we used to restore and correct the conditions mentioned before are

tooth-colored composite resin or resin modified materials, porcelain, gold and other cast

restorative materials.

Each student will learn the microbiologic causes and treatment of caries, the causes and

treatment of discolored and malformed teeth and the treatment of tooth fractures both from

an emergency point of view as well as teeth that have been fractured for a period of time.

They will also learn about the materials use for these purposes, as well as about the bruxism

and the occlusal and esthetics characteristics of the normal adult denture.

Knowledge of the main principles of facial aesthetics with the aim of restoring the patient with

a natural, healthy and aesthetically correct smile.

The student will be able to relate restorative dentistry with the rest of the subjects involved in

the restoration and pathology of the orofacial complex as prosthesis and periodontics in order

to achieve a proper diagnosis and a plan of multidisciplinary and comprehensive treatment.

Design, prepare teeth, prescribed and record indirect restorations: inlays, veneers and single

crowns.

Perform endodontic treatments and implement procedures to preserve pulp vitality also

perform conventional cosmetic procedures from a multidisciplinary perspective.

To recognize, diagnose and implement simple treatment in painful disorders applying a

comprehensive diagnosis and the best treatment.

For the establishment of the proper treatment the student must be competent in:

prescription of drugs, knowing their contraindications, interactions, systemic effects and

effects on other organs.

3. Specific skills.

Specific competences of the subject. At the end of this subject the student will be able to:

CE3. Identify the patient´s concerns and expectations, as well as having the

ability to have an efficient and clear oral and written communication with the patients, their family, the social media and other professionals.

CE14. Recognise the general process of diseases, which include infections, inflammations, immune system alteration, degeneration, cancer, metabolic

alterations and genetic disorders. CE16. Understand the action mechanisms, indications, drug efficiency and

other therapeutic procedures, knowing the contraindications, interactions, systemic effects and interactions on other organs, based on the scientific

evidence available. CE17. Understand and recognise the ergonomic and occupational safety principles (including cross-infection control, radiation protection,

occupational and biological diseases).

C. Clinical skills: Diagnosis, prognosis and dental treatment plan.

CE21. Know how to fulfil a complete oral examination, including the radiological and complementary explorations, and to obtain the clinical

references correctly.

D. Clinical skills: Dental Therapeutics.

CE25. To know and apply the basic treatment of the most common oral and dental diseases in patients of all ages. Therapeutic procedures must be

based on the concept of minimally invasive dentistry and in a comprehensive and integrated approach to the dental treatment.

CE26. To know how to plan and carry out multidisciplinary, sequential and integrated limited complexity in patients of all ages and conditions and

patients who require special care dental treatments. CE27. Ask and propose appropriate preventive measurements in every clinical situation.

CE30. Recognize the role of the dentist in prevention and protection against

oral diseases and also in maintaining and promoting health, at the individual and the community level.

7. Teaching methodology.

Presentation of the concepts and procedures associated with the knowledge

of materials using the method of the lesson.

Classroom activities relating individuals or groups, monitoring their

competences and projects. This includes project methodology and case

study methodology, to be held as a group.

8. Procedures for evaluation.

Criteria and evaluation methods.

It will continue as a system of assessment of knowledge of students, the

continuous assessment, according to the general rules of evaluation of the

European University of Madrid.

Assistance:

It is imperative attendance and active participation of students at lectures, clinical sessions, seminars, as well as other complementary activities, for

the correct learning of the theoretical content of the teaching program and for the development of skills.

Grade assessment is continuous. For this reason, attendance is critical.

Class attendance is mandatory assuming a suspense in the ordinary call of

the subject if attendance is less than 50%.

Theoretical evaluation:

It will consist on a knowledge test at the end of the semester, with multiple choice questions and / or short questions. This will count the 40% of the

final theoretical grade. The resolution of a clinical case will have a 20% weight in the final grade.

Knowledge tests will be approved with a score equal to or greater than

50%.

Students who have not been submitted to these tests or those who have failed, must be attend to a final objective test that could be a test, one or

more clinical cases, short questions or oral examination (the type of evaluation will be determined one month before the extraordinary call,

informing the student the type of test to be performed)

The student must compile a portfolio with their tasks done at home or in the classroom. Each activity will be delivered to the teacher in the set day. The

teacher will corrected them in order to develop a continuous evaluation. At the end of the course students will delivered sll of them in digital format or

by uploading to Moodle this collection of works, which we call "portfolio". The portfolio will count 15% of the final grade.

To pass the subject is necessary to successfully overcome all the parts

separately. A score below 5 in any of the different forms of assessment involve the suspense of the subject

Final evaluation

The student, at the end of the subject must demonstrate theoretical knowledge, attitude,

quality, and sufficient capacity to be able to continue their learning at the university dental

clinic.
