FAMILY FUN DAYS 4-H Camp Bristol Hills has long been known for its excellent summer program, but did you know that we do more than “summer camp”? SPROUT CAMP (Campers going into 1st-3rd Grades) - For many families, their child’s camp experience may be their first time away from home. Our Sprout Camp is designed as an introduction to overnight camp life for campers and their families. This unique 3-day/2-night residential camp experience is ideal for younger campers because it gives them a chance to experience many of the great camp traditions without the fear of not seeing family for an entire week. Sprout Camp is great for families too. A parent told us that “It was

a great independent experience that my kids really needed. They were able to let go and be silly, and have fun with friends”. What do Sprout Campers do? They rotate through camp classes like crafts, hiking, swimming, nature, and more. They also join the rest of camp for delicious meals in the dining hall, participate in exciting evening programs and campfires, and sleep in cabins with their new friends. Ultimately, Sprout Campers get to “test the water” to see what a full week of camp will be like!

DAY CAMP (Campers going into Kindergarten-2nd Grade)- This exciting program offers younger children an opportunity to experience Camp at its finest. Here, campers are able to improve and develop new skills through crafts, nature exploration, games, songs, and swimming. Of course, campers will have lots of opportunities to make new friends too! In addition, weekly themes will create an atmosphere of fun and learning all summer long. With different activities every week, campers can choose to come one week or come all summer long!

Day Campers will join the Resident Campers in the Dining Hall for lunch. Camp will provide lunches for Day Campers. This program operates Monday through Friday from 8:45am to 4:00pm. Busing for Day Camp programs is available from the 4-H office in Canandaigua. For more information on busing, see p. 15.

TEENS WITH AUTISM All kids deserve a summer camp experience. 4-H Camp Bristol Hills has partnered with the Autism Center at Ontario ARC to bring this summer staple to children with Autism and other developmental disabilities. The collaboration gives children with special needs the support and opportunity to create lasting memories and build new friendships. Campers get to improve their social, communication and physical skills in an enjoyable and relaxed environment. New in 2013, campers will choose their classes on

Sunday at camp, rather than on the application (Horseback riding and Master Classes still require advance registration).

Campers select from any of the classes described on pages 7-9 or from Master Classes on page 10.

(Campers going into 3rd grade or higher) - Resident Camp provides youth with a six-day, five-night overnight camp experience.

Campers get to choose their morning classes from over 20 different options, and participate in those activities each morning. In the afternoons, campers participate in a variety of recreational activities that keep them busy. In addition to their free swim time each day, other popular afternoon recreation choices include water slides, hikes, sports, crafts and much more! Our staff provide special evening programs that involve campers in a variety of events. Our program is designed to give each youth a beneficial summer experience that emphasizes fun!

We are pleased to offer a wide array of classes so that each child is sure to find just what s/he is looking for! Campers participate in four classes each morning. Some classes require multiple class periods daily, as indicated in the class descriptions (pp 7-10).

One of the highlights for many resident campers is staying in the cabins and forming close friendships with their cabin mates. Our cabin groups range from 6-16 campers and are grouped by ages.

(Campers going into 3rd Grade or higher) - Progression Camp is a great fit for campers who want to enjoy the camp experience, but have outside commitments in the evenings. These campers do everything that the overnight campers do, except the evening activities and sleeping in cabins.

Progression campers participate in morning classes with Resident campers as well as one afternoon recreation activity and free swim, but go home at the end of each day. Campers choose their class selections on the registration form. Class options are described

on pages 7 through 9. Progression Campers may also choose to participate in Master Classes (page 10).

In addition to classes and recreation activities, Progression campers join all of camp for meal times and visits to the camp store.

This program will run Monday through Friday, 8:45am to 4:00pm. For busing, see p. 15.

ADVENTURE CAMP

YWAC (Young Women’s Adventure Camp)

(Open to campers going into 6th Grade or higher) Want to push yourself a little further? Want even more excitement? 4-H Camp Bristol Hills’ challenge ropes course presents older campers with the ultimate challenge! While engaging in a “challenge by choice” philosophy, campers will develop group problem-solving, communication, and human relation skills. Adventure Campers work in groups through a series of challenges ranging from fun and exciting field games and problem

solving initiatives to the thrills of the high ropes course. Push yourself on the Pamper Pole (shown, right) or take a trip on the Zip Line, Adventure Program campers do it all! Campers also participate in other selected camp activities and swim in our pool. Here is a great chance to meet new friends while participating in exciting activities. Dates: August 4-8 (Sun - Thurs) Cost: $325/week Early Bird: SAVE $20!

(Open to girls going into 6th-8th grade) Girls have limited opportunities to discuss the special issues facing them including concerns over body image, peer pressure, relationships, an unwillingness to accept leadership positions, and the fear of academic success. This unique specialty camp uses traditional camp activities (e.g. swimming, crafts, challenge ropes course, field sports, leadership projects) to form a basis of sharing and support. While YWAC campers participate in selected general camp afternoon rec.’s and evening programs, a majority of their camp

day is spent in activities designed just for them. Dates: June 30-July 5 July 7-12 Cost: $350/week Campership support may be available through the Ontario County Youth Bureau for YWAC campers. Visit us online or contact the camp office for Campership applications

Air Rifle- Taught by NRA certified instructors, this course is offered to campers going into

6th grade or higher. Campers learn safe and responsible use of an air rifle. (Double period, not offered week 6).

Archery- This class is taught by 4-H Shooting Sports certified instructors and focuses on shooting techniques. Younger archers use recurve bows, older campers take aim with compound bows. Level 1: 3rd-6th grade Level 2: 6th grade & up, Level 2 not offered week 6.

Quidditch– Grab your Firebolt and make your way to the Pitch, we’re going to take to the air in search of the Golden Snitch! Beware the Beaters and their Bludgers, and help your team get the Quaffle through your opponents’ goals in this muggle version of the legendary Harry Potter-inspired Quidditch game!

Swimming Lessons– Experts say that children four years and older should participate in swim lessons, and 4-H Camp Bristol Hills is here to help.

Level 1: Our Red Cross certified staff will instruct beginning swimmers on basic swim strokes. These lessons are ideal for campers who are new to swimming. No prerequisite skills are needed.

Level 2: These lessons are for campers with some experience in the pool. Campers should be able to float on front and back, submerge their head under water, and have basic ability to move their arms and legs to propel themselves in the water .

Water Sports– Water Polo, Sharks and Minnows, Marco Polo, and many other water games await our campers in this fun class. Activities are led by our Red Cross certified Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors.

COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING (CIT) (Open to campers 15-16 years of age) Are you looking for a way to have a positive impact in your community? Are you thinking of a future career working with children? The Counselor in Training (CIT) program could be just the thing for you! Many of our counselors started out as CITs themselves.

This two-week program allows CITs to gain practical experience working with campers by assisting counselors during classes, afternoon recreational

activities, evening programs, and in cabins. Not only will CITs get hands-on leadership experience, they will also attend workshops from Directors and other leaders at camp on a variety of topics such as behavior and risk management, interviewing tips, and managing stress – to name a few.

Select CITs may be invited back to camp during the week of August 4-9, to assist camp staff (this opportunity is voluntary and is not a requirement for participation in the CIT program).

CITs successfully completing the program will be considered for hire in 2014. CIT campers must attend two

consecutive weeks. Housing and supervision is not available over the weekend, requiring CITs to return home. Dates: Session 1: June 30-July 5 & July 7-12 Session 2: July 14-19 & July 21-26 Cost: $415/ 2-week session. No Early Bird Discount.

Adventure Program- Feel the thrills and chills of the challenge ropes course! Campers will participate in our Adventure Program, getting to know each other, working as a team, and overcoming simple, fun challenges. Campers work through a series of field initiatives before moving on to low ropes elements, like the Nitro Crossing or the Porthole, or the Spider’s Web.

Older campers, in Level 2, will also

experience our high ropes course. Climb the trees, and scurry across the Pirates Crossing or the Burma Bridge, 25 feet off the ground!

Level 1: 3rd-6th grade

Level 2: 6th grade & up, Double period. Not offered week 6.

Camping- This class highlights some of the techniques used when people go camping in the back country. Campers will learn how to build a shelter, tie popular camping knots, light a controlled campfire, hang food-bags, and use a map and compass. This class has an optional sleep out on Thursday night, weather permitting.

Hiking– Lace up your boots, and bring your water bottles, we’re going on an adventure! Explore camp like you’ve never seen it before. Hike the trails through the ravine, explore the ruins of the original Letchworth home, or blaze your own trail as we bushwhack our way across the 125+ acres of camp property!

Horseback Riding- This class provides an introduction to Western-style riding. Approximately one hour of riding time per day for five days. Lessons also include feeding, equipment, and basic care of horses. Triple period. There is an additional

fee ($200) to cover transportation and lessons. (Not offered week 1 or 6.) Horseback requires pre-registration.

Level 1: Introduction to horseback. Campers will learn to walk and trot on a horse.

Level 2: Designed for campers who have previous riding experience and are comfortable, controlled and balanced at a walk and trot before taking this class.

Camp reserves the right to move an individual from Level 2 to Level 1 if safety dictates.

Service Hands

Hands – Do you love camp? Have you ever thought about making camp a better place for the long haul? The 4-H motto states “...I pledge my HANDS to greater service...”. This new class offers campers an opportunity to leave their mark at camp in a positive way. Hands campers work with our counselors to take on meaningful work projects that are both fun and helpful for camp.

Projects this year will include:

Weeks 1&2: Cutting a new trail through the woods & meadows

Weeks 3&4: Creating a large wooden display map of camp

Weeks 5&6: Planting a living sculpture (ie. sod sofa, willow hut, topiary)

(Due to the complexity of these projects, they will span two weeks. Campers are not required to attend both weeks.)

Critter Care- Campers work with counselors to take care of a variety of animals including pets and farm animals. In recent years, we’ve worked with sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, snakes, chinchilla, and more! Helping to feed, water, groom and clean these animals are great opportunities for campers to work directly with the animals. This class is ideal for campers who have pets at home or are just interested in learning more about proper animal care.

Fishing– Campers practice catch-and-release fishing, as they hook the sunfish and bass in our ponds. They learn to bait a hook, cast spin rods, and land the big one!

Geocaching- Hidden treasure abounds! Campers use GPS units to hide and search for clues in a geocaching adventure that spans the entire camp! This class is a perfect blend for campers who enjoy the great outdoors, and the high-tech world of GPS.

Great Outdoors- The diversity of habitats at 4-H Camp Bristol Hills allows for a wide variety of wildlife. Campers will scout the area for tracks, nests, and other signs of our native wildlife. They make their own pine cone birdfeeders, and get hands-on with our collection of native furs, skulls, bones, and owl pellets. Discussions will focus on predator-prey relationships, animal adaptations, populations, and the web of life.

Rocketry- 3, 2, 1, BLAST OFF! This class challenges campers to build a variety of different rockets like effervescent rockets, soda bottle rockets, and the explosive Estes’ model rockets, as they learn about propulsion, aerodynamics, and lift.

Wild Edibles- We all know the adage “leaves of three, leave it be”, but there’s a lot more to know when it comes to plants you can eat! This class will show campers some of the safe snacks that can be found in our natural world, as well as safe ways to prepare and enjoy them. Sample some pine needle tea, discover some edible berries, and learn to identify the plants to avoid!

Creative Arts Cooking Crafts

Digital Photography Woodworking 1&2

Cooking- Who doesn’t love delicious home-made food? Campers have fun making great-tasting and healthy foods! Find out how to safely use a knife, and the difference between a dry measure and a liquid measure. This class utilizes materials from Cornell University’s Choose Health curriculum and features great recipes as well as basic cooking techniques.

Crafts- This perennial favorite can incorporate a wide variety of art forms including textiles, painting, sculpture, miniatures, crafts from recycled materials and much more! Campers make several creative projects throughout the week, then take them home on Friday!

Digital Photography– Bring your own digital camera to camp this summer and learn how to take better pictures. Campers will learn some basic photo techniques each day and then get out

in the field to test out their new skills. Campers will select their favorite image at the end of the week and we’ll get them printed and mounted on matte board for a photo gallery in Cockram Lodge during camper pickup. (campers must bring a dedicated digital camera, no cell phone cameras will be allowed)

Woodworking- Younger campers in Woodworking 1 will build a napkin holder project to take home. Older campers, in Woodworking 2 will create a folding lawn chair. All campers in these classes will learn the basic techniques for measuring, cutting, sanding and finishing with paints and stains. Campers will use a variety of hand and power tools under close supervision.

MASTER CLASSES FOR RESIDENT & PROGRESSION CAMPERS

(Resident/Progression Campers going into 6th Grade or higher) Are you looking for something more? Our new Master Classes allow campers to explore their favorite classes in much greater detail. Campers who elect to participate in a Master Class will register as either a Resident or Progression camper, but rather than selecting four classes to participate in each morning, Master Class campers will enjoy an uninterrupted three-hour block each morning devoted to their chosen focus. This will allow campers to complete more extensive projects in their given area, and demonstrate a greater sense of Mastery in that particular skill.

Progression Camp Fee

Week of June 30-July 5 Drama: The curtain is going up… on a week filled with the magic of the theater! Campers work with a professionally trained actor to create a show in just one week. The week will culminate in a performance for all to see. You will learn the ins and outs of putting a show together, from sets and costumes to acting on stage. This is the perfect opportunity for campers who love to perform or are just intrigued about what it’s like to be a part of the magic of theater. This program sold out in 2012!

Week of July 7-12 Food Science: This exciting program allows campers to dig deep into the issues of food science, food safety, and CSI technologies. Campers will meet and work with faculty and graduate students from the Cornell University Department of Food Science to understand the chemical, biological, physical, nutritional and sensory characteristics of milk and dairy products; make their own dairy products; and use innovative GIS, microbiological, and epidemiological methods to investigate a mock outbreak of a foodborne disease.

Week of July 14-19 Construction: Do you enjoy swinging a hammer and turning a wrench? If you like working with your hands, and want to take on a bigger project, with service in mind, the Master Class in Construction will give you an opportunity to work directly with a professional contractor. Campers will build a small storage shed near the pond for all of the fishing equipment and another for the Archery range to store the bows and arrows. They will learn to develop construction plans, safely work with power tools, order materials, add shingles and build a project from start to finish.

Week of July 21-26 STEM: Cornell University graduate students turn 4-H Camp into a outdoor learning lab, for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math! Using lessons from the Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR), they will turn classroom concepts into real- world scenarios while experimenting with a variety of STEM principles such as physics, biology, engineering, chemistry, and earth science. Explore forensic science with fiber analysis, fingerprinting, and chromatography, build catapults, or launch your own homemade airboat model, and see what you can learn!

CAMP INFORMATION

Application, will be used for Campership Support. Consider rounding up your camp fees to help other campers. Donations to THE HILLTOP FUND are optional, and as a 501(c)3 non-profit, any contributions made to 4-H Camp Bristol Hills are tax deductible.

REFUND POLICY: Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable (a deposit cannot be applied to the balance of another week’s camp fees, nor transferred to another camper’s fee). Refunds for the balance of the camp fee are made only for cancellations received in writing at least three weeks prior to the opening day of the camp session. A refund will be granted in cases of serious illness or injury, and this request must be accompanied by a physician’s note. A camper who does not arrive, arrives late, leaves early, or attends only a part of the session will not receive a refund. If a camper is experiencing a difficult adjustment to camp or is sent home because of a behavior problem, no refund will be granted.

HEALTH and SAFETY: New York State Health code requires that a completed and up-to-date health history be submitted for each child attending camp. This health history must be updated annually, so if your child has attended camp in previous years, you will be required to submit a new health history form each year.

EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT: An Early Bird Discount will be applied to Applications postmarked on or before April 15. For Sprout camp, the discount is $10. For Resident, Day, Progression, YWAC, and Adventure camps, the discount is $20. There is no discount for the Counselor-In-Training Program.

ONTARIO COUNTY RESIDENT DISCOUNT: 4-H Camp Bristol Hills is owned and operated by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County 4-H Program. A discount is provided to Ontario County residents. For Sprout camp, the discount is $10. For all other camps, the discount is $20. To be eligible, the parents or guardians must be eligible to vote in Ontario County.

CAMPERSHIPS: Assistance is available for Ontario County youth in financially limited families. Campership applications must be received no later than March 31 and may be obtained online at the camp website, from your school nurse, or by contacting the 4-H Camp office.

THE HILLTOP FUND: The Hilltop Fund is the campership support fund that allows us to assist youth from financially limited families. You are invited to make an optional contribution to THE HILLTOP FUND, in any amount you choose, on the Application Form. 100% of the funds collected from this line on the

APPLICATION: To ensure that your child is placed in a particular session, it is important to sign up early.

If you plan to register more than one child, or the same child for more than one week, you must complete a separate form for each one. Additional Application forms may be downloaded from the camp website. Families are also invited to send Applications by email. Visit the camp website to download an email-enabled Application form. These applications can be emailed to the camp office.

Your deposit will be applied to the total camp fee. The balance of the camp fee is due with your child’s Health Form at least three (3) weeks prior to attending camp. We reserve the right to cancel any camper Application that is not complete prior to camp.

Checks should be made to “4-H Camp Bristol Hills.” If you are emailing your Application form and paying with a check or credit card, payment must be received within one week in order to confirm your space.

If you prefer to pay by credit card, camp will accept Mastercard, Visa and Discover.

Application forms can be mailed, emailed, or delivered to the 4-H Camp Office in Canandaigua, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Credit card payments may also be called in to the camp office. For security reasons, we ask that you do NOT send us your credit card information by email.

No one will be permitted to attend camp without a completed health history form, signed by a physician and completed within one year of camp. The form will be mailed with your confirmation and Camp Handbook and must be returned, along with the balance of your camp fee, three (3) weeks prior to your child’s arrival at camp. If you register by email, or choose the “Go Green” option on the Application form, you will need to download your Health Form (inside the Camp Handbook) from our website.

All campers check in with the on–site Camp Health Supervisor upon arrival at camp. Campers who arrive sick will be sent home. Camp fee, minus the deposit, will be refunded only if the Camp Health Supervisor finds it necessary to send a child home at check-in. Any medical fees incurred during camp will be billed to the parent/

guardian. The Health Supervisor and selected staff are trained in First Aid and CPR. They are available 24 hours a day to provide medical assistance to your child.

STAFFING: Our staff is hired for their experience and qualifications in working with children. We pride ourselves in providing a caring family atmosphere for all children. In selecting staff, we look for individuals who are responsible, caring, patient, skilled in a particular area; enthusiastic, strong leaders, and are willing to go that extra mile for your child. Each staff member undergoes multiple criminal background checks, as well as participating in an intensive training that further prepares him/her for the camping season.

LIVING AREAS: Closely supervised by counselors,

campers are housed in cabins. The cabins have electricity, bunks with foam mattresses, and screens on all windows and doors. Campers are assigned to cabins by age. Campers can be placed with a friend of the same gender and in the same age range (within 24 months), upon parent request. Flush toilets and shower house facilities are centrally located.

MEALS: Our professional kitchen staff takes pride in preparing food that is both nutritious and appealing to children. Camp provides options at each meal to accommodate dietary needs.

SECURITY: Your child’s safety is our greatest concern. Campers are closely supervised and access to our camp property is controlled. No camper will be released to an individual other than

CONDITIONS OF CAMP REGISTRATION

I understand the Camper Health History and program balance are due three (3) weeks prior to the beginning of the camping session(s) my child is attending. I understand the deposit included with this application is NON-REFUNDABLE/NON-TRANSFERABLE. I also understand that all campers must follow the 4-H Camp Bristol Hills rules. If a camper finds it difficult to adjust to camp life; is disruptive or infringes on the rights of others, the parent/guardian will be contacted to pick up their child. No refund will be given.

Photo, Video, and Audio Consent Release: From time to time, photographs, videos, direct quotes, and/or audio clips may be taken of youth and adults attending Cornell Cooperative Extension events or participating in Cornell Cooperative Extension sponsored programs and activities. Cornell Cooperative Extension requests the right to use all such photos, videos, print material, and/or audio clips taken of youth and adults involved in these programs and activities. They may be used for a variety of purposes, including, but not limited to, publications, promotional brochures, promotions, or showcase of our programs on our Web sites, showcase of activities in local and/or national newspapers or programming, and other similar, lawful purposes. “Piper” Camp Director, Matthew Wood has served as Camp Director for six seasons, and as Adventure Specialist for one season. Matthew has a degree in Sociology and Human Services, and is the former Camp Director for Camp Hollis in Oswego.

“Laces” Camp Director, Gina Holsopple will be serving her seventh summer with us, six as Director, one as YWAC Specialist. Previously, Gina was the Director for Camp Hollis in Oswego. She has degrees in Sociology, Women’s Studies and Music.

“Neutron” 4-H Educator, Jim Hooper has been on staff since 2005, and has previously spent 6 seasons with Camp Hollis. Additionally, Jim spent 7 years with the County Parks system in Ohio. He has a Masters in Rec. Management and oversees the educational activities and marketing for camp.

“Java” 4-H Camp Administrator, Tim Davis has been oper-ating 4-H Camp Bristol Hills since 1998. Previ-ously, Tim was a 4-H Educator with responsi-bilities at 4-H Camp Overlook for 15 years. Tim has worked with for 4-H Camps and Cornell Cooperative Extension for nearly 30 years.

“Udora” Camp Registrar, Ellen Martin, joined the Camp team in 2006. Ellen is the voice you hear when you call the camp office, and she is tirelessly committed to ensuring that applica-tions are processed quick-ly and accurately. It’s not unusual to catch her an-swering phones even after 5pm!

BUSING: There is a FREE shuttle bus for Day and Progression Campers. The bus leaves the Cornell Cooperative Extension office at 480 N. Main St., Canandaigua at 8:30am and returns at 4:30pm daily, Monday through Friday morning. Please arrive a few minutes early to ensure a timely departure in the morning, and be waiting for them when they return. This bus does NOT operate on Friday afternoon. Parents must pick up their children at camp on Friday. Parents should indicate on the application whether they plan to use the shuttle service, or drop their child off directly at camp.

CAMP STORE: The Camp Store is operated on a cash basis. The Camp Store is optional. If you would like your child to be able to make purchases, please send them with cash. Your child will be expected to keep their money with their belongings at camp. Counselors will assist campers in handling their money.

The Camp Store features a variety of souvenirs including T-shirts,

sweatshirts, stuffed animals, hats and more. Also available are light snacks, boondoggle lace, and basic conveniences. We now offer a 4-H Camp Store Survival Kit (shown right) for $24 on the application form, or at camp.

Campers will be invited to visit the Camp Store once each day. For more information about merchandise available in the camp store, visit the camp website.

CAMP HANDBOOKS: A Camp Handbook (including a confirmation letter, Health Form, packing list, sample daily schedule, and other camp information) will be sent to parents once their child has registered for camp. Handbooks are also available online on our camp website. Families are encouraged to contact the 4-H Camp Office if they have any questions before registering their child. Families registering by email are expected to download the appropriate Camp Handbook (including Health Form, and Photo Release Form) from our website. No Handbooks will be mailed to families who register by email unless requested.

A 4-H Camp Survival Kit can be purchased on your application and delivered when your child arrives at camp. These packages contain:
