On Sunday 9/18/11 the Twin Palms 4-H Photography Project took their first photo walk of the new 4-H year at Lassen Volcanic National Park. We all walked around Manzanita Lake on one of the 150 miles of trails in the park. Brian Dryer, a Nature Photographer joined us and gave us some helpful hints in taking nature shots, such as being quiet so we don’t scare the wild life….We all had a great time being together and taking pictures of the lake views, animals, and the mountain landscape. We cant wait to go on more photo walks and have more adventures!

County-Wide International Exchange

The Goschke family of Shasta County hosted a Japanese youth, Kei Watabe, as part of a 4-H cultural exchange program from July 22 to August 18, 2011. Kei was part of a 19 member delegation that visited California this summer through a collaboration of California 4-H and the Labo youth development organization in Japan. The program is coordinated through the University of California Cooperative Extension which brings Japanese youth to California 4-H homes and sends 4-Her’s to Japan. Labo is a non-formal education program serving Japanese youth in an after-school setting. Labo students work to acquire language skills and learn to appreciate cultural differences. After an arrival orientation in Davis, CA, the delegates went to homes located throughout California. Each exchange student returned home with a unique experience.

If you are interested in learning more about the international exchange program and/or would like to sign up for our county-wide group please contact Tracy Goschke at 357-4594. The International Program offers exchange partnerships with Japan, Australia, Costa Rica, and Norway. This program is available for 4-H youth ages 10-19. Homestays are only for a month during the summer, but the experience will last a lifetime!

ACHIEVEMENT DAY 2011 By Charlie Little, Palo Cedro 4-H Community Club Leader The All Stars really knew how to add a bit of fun when they did Achievement Day. The decorations were classy, down to candy bowls on the table. They started out with a game to determine who got the desserts first. Everyone took part, from the younger set (preschool) to those over 60. After everyone had a chance to get a plate of goodies the program started. They installed the Officers that were present, then moved on to the

Teen/Junior Leader’s patches. They passed out a variety of service awards, the All Stars rotated as they did the presentation, each getting a chance to present. When they got to the Leader’s awards they gave out special little bags to each leader which was labeled, “Leader’s Survival Kit”. It really was touching, honoring the volunteers who give their time. They honored the Council Officers and thanked them for the extra time give attending Council. I need to apologize to the all Stars for letting me present the Expo medals, I was not slated to present them, but they were gracious enough to alter their script to let me.

Thank you All Stars, you did an outstanding job.

THE ALL STARS ARE: Ciera Barry (Cow Creek), Rebecca Peconom (Black Butte), Harley Purvis (Black Butte), and Advisor Tanya Purvis, their theme was “Valley Sweet Achievements” and it truly was “Sweet”
