On Your New Granite Countertops
4 WAYSTO SAVE BIG
But many people fall into the trap of
overpaying because they simply don’t
buy granite often enough to know how
to shop like an “insider” and get the
best prices—without sacrificing on
quality.
This guide reveals four tips you can use
to avoid that common trap—and get
the best possible deal on a beautiful,
high-quality granite countertops that
will make your friends and family
jealous. And don’t worry, they won’t
know your cost-saving secret unless
you tell them!
It’s so easy to pay way more money for new granite countertops than you need to.
1 Avoid using a middleman.
Did you know all the “big box” home improvement stores don’t make their own stone countertops? They simply buy granite from local fabricators, then up-charge you to make a profit. Worse still, their staff often know very little about countertops and have trouble making good recommendations. Plus, you can’t even see the actual slab of stone you’re going to purchase until it’s already cut and ready to install—when it’s too late to make changes. If you want the best deal (and the highest level of expertise), cut out the middleman and go straight to the fabricator yourself.
Choose a straight-edge design.
Sure, there are plenty of interesting shapes you could choose when designing your next countertops—circles, ovals, “bat wings.” But here’s what they don’t tell you when you’re picking out that unique shape in the store: Your price per square foot is typically calculated by the longest length and width of each piece. You still pay for the pieces stone they’re cutting away from those custom shapes, making that circle or oval more expensive for less granite. And that’s why bat wings can be so pricey. If you want to get the most stone for the least money, go for a straight-edge design like a rectangle or square.
2
For vanities, use a “remnant.”3If your project is smaller, like a bathroom vanity or closet island, you only need a small piece of stone. The best way to do this is by using a “remnant”—the leftover granite from a different project. When a company has to cut your small piece out of a full slab, they’re going to charge you more money. So make sure you’re working with a company that will use a remnant at a lower cost. (Those “big box” stores often charge you the same amount whether they use a remnant or not!) Quality granite fabricators—the ones who actually make the countertops—have access to remnants and will often give you a better price on smaller projects like vanities.
General contractors typicallycharge more than granite specialists.
Contractors are great if you’re getting a package deal to have them renovate multiple areas of your home, which might include new countertops. But unless they’re helping with other projects, their prices to install new counters will generally be more expensive—because they’re really just another middleman. So if you’re only doing countertops for your project, save money by going direct to a granite fabricator. And save the contractor rate for a larger renovation project.
