Commander’s Column

Commander's Column continued on page 5...

April 2020, Spring awakens, and the Season of renewal has begun. April has always been a very active month in the history of our Country. The first skirmish of our American Revolution started on the Green at Lexington, MA on 19 APRIL 1775 (the Shot Heard Around the World) and continued until the Treaty of Ghent was signed in 1783. The War Between the States started at Ft. Sumter, SC on 12 APRIL 1861 and continued four more years. If you have not visited the fort, please avail yourself, it is truly amazing how the Union soldiers withstood the Confederate bombardment. It has been reconstructed and a great experience. The Confederates under General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant on 09 APRIL 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse, VA. The sacrifice on both sides was mind-boggling, over 500,000 died and over 1 million wounded – physically and mentally. The horrors of war are far in excess of what those of us not exposed to it can imagine. That is why the care of our Veterans should always be paramount.

The end of the Civil War also brought the assassination of President Lincoln on 15 APRIL 1865. Though John Wilkes Booth and his co-conspirators were apprehended, the damage they caused to the nation is impossible to measure.

18 APRIL 1942 also was a rallying time for America during some of the darkest days of World War ll – then Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle lead the famous raid on Japan from the deck of the USS Hornet. To understand the bravery of the crews and those who transported them so close to Japan while risking all their lives is mind boggling. Doolittle’s crews knew it could be a one-way flight, they had no idea of the stirring of the American spirit it created. The American people were truly motivated to victory for which we shall always be eternally grateful.

Please keep in mind the sacrifice that continues to this day of our service members in far off lands standing sentry duty to maintain our freedom and liberty. We are a free people because of the sacrifice of others who have fought for and continue to maintain for all of us.

We head into April 2020 with the Wuhan-virus dominating the headlines and limiting our movement as people. We must always remember we are a resilient people and will work and think our victory over a virus or other enemy. Our governmental and private medical researchers are developing methods to overcome this disease and we should pray this nightmare is over soon. The facts take time to emerge, but our scientists will use all the knowledge they possess to conquer this as they did polio, measles and so many other diseases that hinder human life.

Your Board of Directors met for an emergency meeting on 15 MARCH and determined that it was best to cancel all activities at the Post until at least 31 MARCH. With the Governor’s “stay at home order” we were correct to proceed cautiously. We are scheduled to meet again on 25 MARCH but due to

the restrictions of “social distancing” we will discuss via electronic and tele-communication. We do not wish to endanger anyone and will transmit this as soon as known. We appreciate your understanding as well as all our blessed volunteers who have disinfected the Post home and will continue to do so as the days progress. Please refrain from visiting the Post building until your elected officials have given us the “go ahead” and then proceed with caution. Bingo will not resume until we are assured it is a safe, healthy environment for all members, supporters and guests.

Spring is generally a very busy time at Post 80 as between meetings, Bingo, Ladies Auxiliary, youth activities and rentals; we are an active hive. Court has been cancelled at the Post until further notice as well. Our disinfecting team led by Ed Ludwig, Dave Wisbrock, John Cruz, Howard Parker and others have our situation under control, but we aim to maintain throughout the future. Should any questions arise, please ask any Board members as we aim to keep everyone informed as well as email and texts. Thank you and have an enjoyable Spring and God Bless America.

On March 9th we had are General Meeting which was run by Jean Krupin. A BIG THANKS to Jean for filling in. Both Bonnie and I were absent due to illness and family issues. I heard is was a great meeting.

Chris Graves, Americanism chairperson, gave a review Our Americanism Essays contest. The winner at the 9th-10th grade level was Anjali Kota, a freshman at Downers Grove South High School and 11th -12th grade level was Mia Fitzgerald, a Junior student at Naperville High School. Mia Fitzgerald, along with her Grandparents, Tom and Nancy Rodek joined Our meeting. Mia Fitzgerald read her very impressive essay on: “What Can I Do to Unite Our Country?”, Congratulation to the winners and thank you Mia for you lovely essay. Mia has been Our Americanism Essay contest winner several times. Thanks again.

Bev Parrott, Illini Girls State Chair, gave her report. She emailed information on Girls State to Downers Grove South (DGS), Downers Grove North (DGS), Lisle Sr. High School and Montini High School. Bev heard back from Lisle Sr. HS and DGS but they did not have any interested students. Bev currently has three students who have mailed their applications to her as follows: Mia Fitzgerald, Naperville HS, Olivia Ostrowski, Hinsdale Central HS and Anyssa Pazmino, John Hancock College Preparatory, Chicago. She has one more girl that expressed an interest. So, we might have four girls going to Girls State this. Year. Great Job Bev! Lastly, we have invited the girls to attend an Orientation session on April 13th, Out next General Meeting. She also extended an invitation to Angie Mulligan, from Department and National, to be part of the Orientation process. Please plan on attending our meeting to welcome our 2020 Girls State candidates and their parents. After the Orientation Session, we will open our meeting at 7:00 p.m. and then we will break for refreshments and have a meet and greet with the girls and their parents. We will continue Our General Meeting after that at approximately 7:30 p.m.

We also need volunteers to be on Nomination Committee. The Nomination Committee consist of fiber (5) members. The committee will take care of obtaining members in good standing for the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary,

Now that we all should stay home because everything is cancelled, you may have read something like this already, but if not, the information may be helpful. Stanford hospital board internal message:

The new Coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days. How can one know if he/she is infected? By the time they have fever and/or cough and go to the hospital, the lung is usually 50% Fibrosis and it's too late. Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning. Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stiffness or tightness, etc., it proves there is no Fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicates no infection.

In critical time, please self-check every morning in an environment with clean air. Serious excellent advice by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases: Everyone should ensure your mouth & throat are moist, never dry. Take a few sips of water every 15 minutes at least. Why? Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or other liquids will wash  them down through your throat and into the stomach. Once there, your stomach acid will kill all the virus. If you don't drink enough water more regularly, the virus can enter your windpipe and into the lungs. That's very dangerous.

Please send and share this with family and friends. Take care everyone and may the world recover from this Coronavirus soon.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - CORONAVIRUS COVID-191. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold

2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.

3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of just 26-27°C. (78-80° F) It hates the Sun.

4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.

A M E R I C A N L E G I O N N E W S

25

5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours - so if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands as soon as  you can with a bacterial soap.

6. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent will kill it.

7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink liquids with ice.

8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.

9. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.

10. Can't emphasize enough - drink plenty of water!

THE SYMPTOMS

1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat lasting 3-4 days

2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5-6 days further.

3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
