Well, another Labor Day Picnic is past, and signals the end of summer. It was a pretty nice affair with plenty of good food. Thank you all for bringing all those delicious dishes to supplement the meat. I greatly appreciate the help in putting this picnic together. So many of you guys pitched in with the cooking, setup and the cleanup. A big thank you to you all guys.

The American Legion National Office has started on-line membership renewal this year. I admit, caught me and Bill by surprise, and caused some confusion as to how this is supposed to work. Bill just received notification from Department that several of you had renewed on-line back in July. Now we are finally receiving our portion of the dues. For awhile I thought we would never see our portion of the dues. I apologize for the confusion and for the inconvenience if some of you sent a check after renewing on-line.

We had our POW/MIA Recognition Dinner on September 17th. Thanks to all those who helped with setting up for the program and those that participated in the program. This being the 10th anniversary of 9/11 that was included in the program also. This recognition is important for the Legion and other veterans’ organizations made Congress to come up with a program and the funding to locate the remains of our service men and women who became Missing in Action. We still have thousands unaccounted for going back to WWII, and we must continue to put pressure on Congress. We’ve come too far only to have Congress cut the funding for this program. Thanks to modern science, the technology was developed using DNA to identify the smallest bone fragment or piece of tissue. Thousands of remains have been found to date giving closure to the families of MIA’s.

October we have the Legion Riders’ Candle Light Bowl coming up on the 22nd. Halloween will be here before you know it. The kids will be out and about so please be careful when driving.

911 REMEMBRANCE / NATIONAL POW/MIA REMEMBRANCE DAYThe Alexander Bradley Burns American Legion Post 80 in Downers Grove

held a special 9/11/2001 Remembrance Ceremony in conjunction with the National POW/MIA Remembrance Day in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy.

Legionnaires, Auxiliary and family members gathered on Saturday September 17, 2011 at our post home of 4000 Saratoga Ave to observe this joint memorial service. Post Color Guard members opened the ceremony and the setting of the POW/MIA Remembrance Table with symbols of the bitterness of captivity and the hope that soon all prisoners of war will be free and all those missing in action will be accounted for. Post members also had a good meal along with the ceremony. The date, 9/17, has been set as a national day to remember our prisoners of war and those missing in action. Participation was sadly lighter than previous years but was well received.
