SPECIAL EVENTS A diabolical opening leadHendrik Sharples found the only opening lead

that could possibly give declarer a problem on thisgrand slam, Board 29 from Tuesday evening.

The bidding certainly showed that Rhoda Walsh,Hendrik’s partner, had nothing to contribute to thedefense. This is how Hendrik was thinking: “Eastopened the bidding and later showed two aces in re-sponse to Blackwood. Perhaps he has the ♥A. Maybeif I lead my deuce of hearts, declarer will have a prob-lem.” No sooner thought than done.

Usually you don’t lead away from a king againsta grand -- in fact, usually you lead a trump and makedeclarer do all the work. But a trump lead here woulddo no good -- when diamonds fail to break 3-3, de-clarer would be forced to take the successful heartfinesse.

But Hendrik’s lead of the ♥2 really put it to thedeclarer. If diamonds were breaking 3-3, he didn’tneed the finesse. And anyway, who ever leads awayfrom a king against a grand slam? Clearly Hendrikdid NOT have the king. So declarer went up with theace and had to go down one when the diamonds failedto break 3-3.

Upsetting newsBy Barry Rigal

The final quarter of the Nickell-Miles match fea-tured a nice piece of bidding judgment by MarkBartusek. Over a 14-16 notrump, Mark held:♠ A K 10 8 6 4 3 ♥ A K 10 5 ♦ J ♣ 4

What would be your choice?Mark could have jumped to 4♠, but instead he

tried 2♣ for the majors. Marshall Miles bid 2♥. NowMark tried 3♠, and when Marshall converted to 4♥,he passed.

Marshall had the following hand:♠ 2 ♥ 8 6 4 2 ♦ Q 9 4 3 ♣ Q 8 6 2

Since both spades and hearts broke 3-2, Marshallhad no problem taking 10 tricks. This was a 10-IMPpickup against 4♠ down one at the other table -- oneIMP more than the margin of victory.

Dave TreadwellWhen you see Dave Treadwell at a tournament,

it’s wise to prepare yourself to suffer through ---or enjoy, depending on your taste --- a bad joke.

The 85-year-old tournament veteran is notori-ous for his seemingly endless store of puns andgags that he manages to relate in perfectly dead-pan fashion. Despite Treadwell’s reputation, youoften don’t know you’ve been had until you hearthe punch line.

There are, however, a couple of serious sidesto Treadwell, a retired chemical engineer.

First, as an expert bridge player, theWilmington DE resident maintains the solemn viewthat it is his obligation to take as many tricks aspossible when at the bridge table. In so doing, hehas earned the rank of Grand Life Master (withmore than 20,000 masterpoints) and has repre-sented the U.S. in international competition on sev-eral occasions.

Second, Treadwell is quite serious when itcomes to serving the bridge community. His dedi-cation earned him accolades as ACBL HonoraryMember of the Year in 1985. Now he also has aplace in the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame as the 1998winner of the Blackwood Award as an ACBL mem-ber who has made major contributions to bridgeoutside of bridge-playing expertise.

Treadwell served as chairman of the ACBLBoard of Governors from 1979 through 1981 andwas co-chairman of the ACBL Appeals Commit-tee from 1975 to 1991. He is a past-president ofUnit 190 (Delaware) and of District 4.

When Treadwell first started playing, few hadeven heard of contract bridge. The game he playedas a youngster growing up in New Jersey wasknown as auction bridge.

It all started when, at the age of 15, Treadwellwas recruited as a fourth. He was immediately smit-ten. By the time he enrolled at MIT in CambridgeMA in 1929, contract bridge had taken off, andTreadwell liked it even better than auction. Heplayed in his first duplicate in 1931 at the BostonChess Club.

“I avidly read the Culbertson Blue Book on bid-ding,” Treadwell says. “I knew it by heart.”

As he became better and better at bridge,Treadwell found himself at the same bridge clubsas some of the future stars of the game, includingBilly Seamon and his sister Edith (now Freilich)and Sidney Silodor.

Naturally competitive, Treadwell always playsin the top event for which he is eligible. He likesthe mental stimulation. “Bridge has helped me asmuch as anything in maintaining my mental facul-ties,” he says. That includes the capacity for re-membering --- and sometimes creating --- jokes. Here are a couple of stories that involve goodfriends of his.

He was playing with the late Jim Becker, andJim raised Dave to 2♥ on three jacks and out. Davedrove all the way to slam, and as Becker was put-ting down the dummy, he said, “You’re always tell-ing jokes -- can’t you take a joke?” As usual Davehad the last laugh -- he made 6♥ doubled.

Then there was the time he was playing withthe late Evelyn Leavitt. They had had a couple ofbad boards in the first session, and Evelyn, alwaysthe pessimist, was sure they had a very poor score. After Dave checked the scoresheet, Evelyn askedhow they did. “Sorry, we failed to qualify,” Davereplied. When Evelyn went up to get her consola-

tion entry, the director asked her what she was do-ing there. “You’re leading the field,” he told her.Evelyn didn’t think it was funny at first, but it be-came a good deal more humorous when she andDave went on to win the event.

When he’s not playing bridge, Treadwellspends his time playing blackjack and working onthe “magic rectangle” --- a figure composed en-tirely of squares of different sizes. The minimumnumber of squares is nine, with only one possibil-ity. With 10 squares, there are more possibilities, and so on. Treadwell has developed magic rect-angles with up to 15 squares --- about 2500 --- us-ing a computer and a mathematical formula.

Treadwell has won hundreds of regional cham-pionships to go with two major titles --- the NorthAmerican Swiss Teams in 1982 and the MasterMixed Teams in 1985.

Whats two clubs? It wasn’t amusing when it happened, but Virgil

Anderson, ACBL Board member from District 15,has a great sense of humor -- even when he’s the vic-tim. It happened Saturday afternoon on Board 14.

Yes, that’s the bidding as Virgil saw it. Clearly itwasn’t a make -- down four -- minus 200.

Before play started, the opening leader askedVirgil, “What’s two clubs?”

“Strong, artificial and forcing,” Virgil replied.“Even over an opening 1NT?”That’s right -- South had opened 1NT -- she didn’t

pass. Virgil just didn’t see the 1NT bid.By the way, Virgil got above average. A couple

of pairs bid and made 3NT, and several more doubled2♠ and collected a 300-point penalty.

Alvin LandyThe 1998 recipient of the von Zedtwitz Award,

recognizing contributions to the game of bridgethrough bridge-playing expertise, is Alvin Landy,Life Master #24 and longtime ACBL chief execu-tive.

A Cleveland native, Landy was a graduate ofWestern Reserve University. He also earned a lawdegree from the school in 1927. He practiced lawin Cleveland until 1943, when he served in theArmy Transport Command during World War II.

Landy joined the ACBL as a tournament direc-tor in 1948. He had previously worked as a free-lance director for years, and was referred to as a“national director” long before the position of asalaried national TD actually existed.

In 1951, Landy was named acting business man-ager of ACBL when his predecessor, Russell Baldwin, was called for active duty during the Korean War.Landy, who was in charge of the day-to-day businessof ACBL, worked with the legendary Al Sobel, whowas named tournament manager in the same year.An article that appeared in a 1951 Bulletin noted:“These top-flight national directors will continue toconduct tournaments despite their added responsibili-ties.”

In December 1952, Landy was named executivemanager of the ACBL. He remained in that capacityuntil his unexpected death from a heart attack in 1967at the age of 62.

Landy’s 16-year tenure as the top executive forthe ACBL was marked by rapid growth in the mem-bership and a stable administration. Landy was namedACBL Honorary Member of the Year in 1957.

In addition to these contributions, Landy servedas secretary of the ACBL Charity Foundation fromthe time of its inception, and was a principal figure inits creation. Through his efforts, the Foundation grewto a $250,000 annual project by 1967.

Landy served as Secretary of the ACBL LawsCommission from 1956 until his death.

Landy was also active in the World Bridge Fed-eration. He was one of its founders and first officers, serving as secretary-treasurer from 1958 to 1966.

As a player, Landy was widely recognized forhis skill and expert play. He won several major events. His first was the American Bridge League’s Knock-out Team Challenge in 1936. He later scored four winsin the Fall NABC Men’s Teams, a record. Landy wasa member of the winning Spingold Knockout Teamin 1949, playing with teammates Jeff Glick, ArthurGoldsmith, Bruce Gowdy and Sol Mogal. He wassecond in the event twice.

Landy was also the originator of the conventionthat bears his name: a 2♣ overcall of an opposing1NT bid to request that partner bid a major. In fact, many bridge players are most familiar with the nameof Landy because of this simple and effective two-suited overcall.

Lindop led his fourth best club, and declarerducked when Joey Silver played the king. Lindop tested spades by win-ning the king, but shifted back to clubs when Sil-ver gave a discouraging signal.

Declarer won and cashed his diamonds. Lindopcould see what was coming -- his ♥Q was trapped. So he tried to muddy the waters by discarding aheart at his first opportunity. This did NOT escapedeclarer’s attention. He was certain Lindop did nothave the ♥Q, so he played for a defensive mistake. He crossed to the ♥K and led back the jack, pass-ing it. Lindop gobbled the trick with his queen andcashed out for down three, plus 300.

At the other table, Lindop’s teammates bid andmade 2NT. As a result his team picked up 10 IMPs.If West had made his game, Lindop’s team wouldhave suffered a 9-IMP loss.

District 20 representative Bob Lix (left picture), co-chair of the Partnership Committee, caddied in the

Vanderbilt earlier this week. The core of the caddycorps (right photo, from left) has been Jay Craviotto,

Patrick Malarkey, Tev Johnson, Bernice Gee and AlexMaynard.

Barbara Piltch, wife of District 25 DirectorHoward Piltch, caddied in the Mixed Pairs whereshe was joined by Barbara Dunn, one of the threeco-chairs of the NABC, and her granddaughterJamie.

Dave Arthur, husband of Entertainment/CharityChairman Elaine Arthur, isn’t a bridge player buthe was caddying in the Intermediate/Novice area.“I have to go to work,” he explained to Matthews,“but I’ll come back if I can work in this room. These people are nice.” Matthews assured Arthurhe would be welcome in the I/N room any time.

Also welcome -- not just in the I/N room --were 20 members of the National Association ofRetired Federal Employees. The group is donatingall caddy fees to the Association’s local chapterwith half of that amount going to Alzheimer’sresearch.

Another welcome addition to the caddy corps isBernice Gee, wife of Canadian bridge pro Ken Gee.Her first stint was in St. Louis where Matthewsrecruited her for Reno. It wasn’t difficult. “I play atregionals, but it’s like a holiday to me to come tothe NABCs,” she said. “These guys (the othercaddies) are doing a superb job.”

In fact, Gee and four other caddies -- AlexMaynard, Tev Johnson, Jay Craviotto and PatrickMalarkey -- are averaging three to four sessions aday. “They’re good about taking naps and comingback,” said Matthews.

Matthews was expecting to be short-handed --“no spring break of any kind” -- but she wasn’texpecting 800 tables. She needed 33 caddies onTuesday and she had 23 available.

Working out of an office that houses 18 boxesof apples, six boxes of bananas and 14 boxes ofpickup slips, Matthews set out to recruit additionalcaddies. The result: “I now have 10 former friendsworking as caddies today,” she laughed.

Matthews is excited about the new combinationof caddies and player/caddies. “I have peoplelooking in every day, asking if I need help.”

She also thinks the players are becoming moreconsiderate of caddies. “Caddy, please” is now acommon call. “We all answer to caddy but weprefer to answer to our last name: Please,”Matthews said.

Caddiescontinued from page 1 Close shave (corrected)

In yesterday’s Daily Bulletin, we carried a handwritten by Barry Rigal entitled Close Shaves. Thearticle was flawed because we misread some ofBarry’s hieroglyphics. Here is the corrected ver-sion:

In our second-round Vanderbilt match, we ran intoa squad playing well and in good luck. We eventuallysqueaked through, but it was certainly not comfort-able.

Avril Rodney declared 3♠ from the South seatafter a transfer auction. I led a diamond to the 9,queen and ace, and Avril decided to scramble someruffs in dummy. She played off the top hearts andruffed a third, then crossed back to the ♦A to ruffthe fourth heart. The best I could do was to pitch adiamond and a club. Now Avril ran the ♣J to myking. I cashed the ♦J and exited with a club to the8, 9 and ace. This was the position:

♠ K Q 9 8 ♠ 10♥ -- ♥ Q♦ — ♦ --♣ -- ♣ Q 5

♠ A J 3♥ --♦ --♣ 6

When Avril led her losing club, I had to ruff andwas endplayed in trumps. Avril had her contract for a6-IMP pickup. This line was not found at the othertable.

A lesson in humilityBy Richard Freedman

Sometimes one gets so intrigued by exotic possi-bilities that one forgets to attend to business. Thatwas the case on Board 26 from the second final ses-sion of Open Pairs I.

Dlr: East ♠ J 8 6 4Vul: Both ♥ A K 6 3

I was East, declaring 3NT. South led the ♥2and North won the ♥A K and returned a heart. Iwon the ♥J, pitching a club from dummy.

There was no hope of establishing dummy’sclub suit -- that would give the defenders at leastone club to go with three hearts and the ♦A. Driv-ing out the ♦A would bring my total up to seventricks -- after that, I could try a club finesse andmaybe locate the ♠J.

When I led the ♦K, North won the ace and ledhis last heart. I threw the ♦2 from my hand theanother low club from dummy. South won the heartand shifted to the ♣J. I held my breath and the ♣Qheld the trick.

Now what? Cashing the ♣A could squeezeNorth in diamonds and spades. Cashing threespades, ending in hand, could squeeze somebodyin diamonds and clubs. Cashing the ♠K A Q andthen diamonds might squeeze somebody in spadesand clubs.

Electing the second option, with the added pos-sibility of the ♠J coming down, I cashed the ♠K, Aand Q, noticing that South showed out on the thirdspade, pitching a diamond. Cashing two diamondsfailed to exert pressure on anybody and I led a clubto the ace for down one.

A more observant technician might have no-ticed, however, that the ♦6 was good. It pays towatch the spots.

New Yorkers Margie Gwozdzinsky and SusanWexler will seek to combine aggressive bidding withaccurate defense and claim their second victory inthe 67th annual Women’s Pairs competition here atthe Spring NABC in Reno.

Whitehead TrophyGwozdzinsky and Wexler, second in the Women’s

Pairs at the 1996 Spring NABC in Philadelphia, willbe vying to have their names inscribed a second timeon the Whitehead Trophy, donated in 1930 by one ofthe world’s greatest bridge authorities.

Wilbur C. Whitehead of New York was a mem-ber of the team that won the Vanderbilt Cup in 1928,the first year it was in play.

Whitehead (1866-1931) was president of the Sim-plex Automobile Company, but bridge held such afascination for him that he retired from business in1910 to devote his whole life to bridge.

At the time, he was living in France, where hewrote his first book, Royal Spades. A second bookwas published in London in 1913.

His first book to appear in America wasWhitehead’s Convention of Auction Bridge in 1914.

He was the inventor of many of the outstandingconventions of bidding and play, the quick-trick tableof card values, the Whitehead system of requirementsfor original bids and responses, and the Whiteheadtable of preferential leads.

Whitehead was instrumental in standardizing pro-cedures in auction bridge and later in contract bridge.

The Women’s Pairs was the first national eventwon by Helen Sobel Smith -- she was Helen White

when she and Helen Bonwit won the title in 1934.Smith went on to win again in 1938 and 1939 withSally Young.

The Women’s Pairs was also the first national titlefor Edith Kemp Freilich, who as Edith Seligman wonin 1941, 1942 and 1943 with Mae Rosen. Freilichalso won with Sally Young in 1946, Virginia Heckelin 1966, her sister Anne Burnstein in 1979 and NancyGruver in 1986.

The Facts: There was an agreed break in tempo before South doubled 3♠. N/S called for the Director when East bid 4♣. The Director later ruled that pass wasnot a logical alternative to bidding 4♣. The table result stood.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the ruling. They suggested East’s hand had enoughdefense to make pass a logical alternative to bidding 4♣.

The Decision: The Committee changed the contract to 3♠ doubled, makingthree, for N/S +730. Law 16A prohibits a player from choosing from amonglogical alternatives one that could be demonstrably suggested by extraneous in-formation. West’s break in tempo before doubling 3♠ demonstrably suggesteddoubt about defeating the contract, and was extraneous information. East had noreason to believe 4♣ would be more successful than 3♠, doubled. He earlier chosenot to compete to 4♣, so pass must be a logical alternative. In 3♠, doubled, it wasclear that declarer would take nine tricks (4 spades, 1 heart, 2 diamonds and 2club ruffs).

The Committee discussed the appropriate time to call the Director in hesita-tion cases. Laws 9A and 9B require the Director to be called when attention isdrawn to an irregularity. The issue was whether the hesitation or the bid thatpossibly used the information from the hesitation is the irregularity. The Directorand one committee member felt the hesitation is the initial irregularity. The ma-jority believed Law 16A makes using the extraneous information the irregularity.

The Facts: E/W play that opening 1NT shows 12-15 HCP balanced, butdenies holding both major suits (may have one). N/S were confused by the ex-planation. North doubled the Stayman bid intending it as takeout, but there wasno such agreement with South. She said to the Director after the hand was overthat she would bid 2♥ if East passed. (South did not attend the hearing)

South led the ♣8, won by East with the ♣10. The ♦Q was won by North’sAce, who led three rounds of hearts. East cashed the ♦K and J (discarding clubsfrom dummy), then led the ♠A, Q and 10. North later won a spade and heart. TheDirector was called when play was completed. West told the Director he wouldhave bid 3NT if he knew the double did not promise clubs. The Director ruledthere was a failure to Alert the double of 2♣. The violation affected the auctionand may have affected the play. The Director ruled Average Plus to E/W andAverage Minus to N/S.

The Appeal: N/S appealed. They suggested there was no agreement aboutthe meaning of the double. The poor result was a product of poor play, and notfrom any failure to Alert.

The Decision: The Committee decided that the table result (E/W +120) wouldstand. There was no violation because N/S had no agreement about the meaningof the double. The Committee felt that South’s club lead indicated she expectedher partner to have clubs. North doubled to show cards, but the Committee felthe would have doubled if his and the West hands were interchanged.

The best Vanderbiltin many years?

The passing of Hideous Hog had temporarily leftthe bridge world without a beloved, gregarious, andsometimes controversial figure. The loss of HH wasfelt, not only by the world of bridge, but also in theform of a world-wide recession driven by the in-stantaneous collapse of both the corn market and thecoffee shop industry.

Everyone is forced to deal with death in a per-sonal manner. Fortunately or unfortunately, top bridgeplayers decided to celebrate HH’s life in a manneronly HH could appreciate. The players decided tocreate as much controversy as they possibly could. To wit:

In the spirit of true “full disclosure,” one top teamproposed a plan to provide every match with match-ing private bathrooms, one smoking, and one non-smoking.

Sent into a tailspin by the recent turn of events, retro players decided to create their own time warpand bring back the stalwart pair of the original Preci-sion Team – Sontag-Weichsel.

The best filly in the field decided her true advan-tage might lie in polo. Accordingly, she saddled uponly four horses and left the rest in the stable. Admi-ration was disguised by cries of heresy.

Turning to the action, in their earliest exit ever, out went Nickell in the round of 32, the last run ofthe most successful team in American bridge sincethe Four Aces. Congrats to Miles for earning the dis-tinction of being the last team to defeat Hamman andWolff. Meanwhile, teams unable to beat the bestAmerican teams continued the trend begun in the late1980’s -- scouring the WBF scene for the best for-eign pairs.

It is against this background that this author at-tempts to warm the seat of the legendary Swami –never to equal, but hoping to honor. The round ofeight, with an almost unheard of 7 of the top 8 origi-nal seeds left, promises to focus the attention whereit belongs – on the bridge itself.

#1 Schwartz v. #8 Shugart - Goldman-Solowaywill not hang up their partnership yet. The toll of play-ing four handed shows upon Shugart, but expect bigthings from the Shugart team in the next year. Con-

Welfare checkBy Sandy Friedman

After arriving late Saturday night from New York,I woke up Sunday morning earlier than planned. Ishowered, and while drying my hair I heard a ratherdetermined series of knocks on my door.

I asked “Who’s there?” and a voice said “Secu-rity.” Since I hadn’t called Security, I figured he hadthe wrong room. I was certain of it when he said hewas there about a welfare check. Startled, I told himI wasn’t on welfare, but he insisted he had the rightroom.

To clear up the confusion, the Security guard sug-gested that I come downstairs. The operator down-stairs explained: Since I hadn’t answered my wakeupcall -- or the casino page -- standard procedure wasto have Security knock on my door “to check on mywelfare.”

#2 Rapee v. #7 Wolfson. The grand old man re-turns to the round of 8 at the age of 80 +. Take theN.Y.-Miami combo to get hot and warm up the greatIcelandics. Zia Rosenberg prove too “Jordanesque.”Wolfson’s crew survives by 35.

#3 Cayne v. #6 Jacobs. The best pair in Europejoins retro Precision in America, but it has proven tobe difficult to win here until you have lost for a while.Seamon-Passell and Berk-Cohen are on their hometurf. In the closest match of the day, Cayne comesfrom behind to win by 14.

#4 Robinson v. #5 Baze. Baze has reason for anew passion for bridge. The Poles and Captain Tiphave given up an absolutely amazing 149 imps in threematchs in 196. The “Little People,” who play so large, can’t penetrate to score enough imps to win. Baze by18.

Sorry, HenryOur list of Open Pairs II winners shows Lorry Mori and Henry Bethe as

winners in 1991 with Zia and Fred Chang as runners-up.That is incorrect, as Bethe pointed out. Mori and Bethe won Open Pairs I in

1991. Ken Cohen and Bob Thomas won Open Pairs II that year with JoAnna andLew Stansby as runners-up.

Goodwill MessageOnly bridge offers a new player and a world champion the same opportunity

-- winning a championship. It’s true that only a limited number of titles can be won, but we can all be

winners in terms of goodwill.Aileen OsofskyChairman, Goodwill Committee
