The forum will take place at the district auditorium in San Manuel and will begin at 6:30 pm with a presentation from Tom Harris of PV Advanced Concepts. Harris will give a background and introduction. Andy Sinnott, Tioga Energy sales executive, will present the rate and savings analysis, and other details of the potential agreement. After the presentations, Harris and Sinnott will take questions from the public. The project will be discussed in detail at the forum but here’s a little background. The M-SM Board voted at their March meeting to send a letter stating their commitment to this project to Tioga, the winner of the RFP (request for proposal) process. The project is not guaranteed at this point though. Its success still depends on a few things. In order for it to move forward it must first be selected in the APS “Solar for Schools” program. Superintendent Dr. Ron Rickel said that if the district was not selected then there will not be a solar project. If the district was selected, then the next stage would include a contract with Tioga that would need to be approved by the Board. If the contract were approved, then Tioga would build a 378 kilowatt solar electricity system at San Manuel Jr./Sr. High School. Tioga would own, operate, maintain, and insure the system. The M-SM district would then agree to buy the power generated by the system from Tioga. This is the only cost the district would pay. The rate Tioga is proposing to charge is 8.6 cents per kilowatt hour. APS currently charges the district 17 cents per kilowatt hour. The difference in rates would provide an estimated savings on district electricity bills of $18,000 in the first year. The savings would grow each year assuming APS’s electricity rates continue to climb. According to Sinnott’s March presentation to the M-SM Board, APS rates increased from 11 cents to 17 cents per kilowatt hour over the past five years. That’s an average increase of about nine percent per year. Tioga’s rate will increase at three percent per year. As long as APS’s rates increase more than three percent each year, the district’s savings will increase each year. Even if APS’s rates increase less than three percent though, the district will still save money on electricity, just not more each year. By Lana Jones July copper was trading at $4.26 per pound Tuesday morning. That’s 10 cents lower than its price at the beginning of the month but still well above the $3.50 range it was trading at this time last year.Freeport McMoRan Corporate Responsibility magazine named Freeport McMoRan in their 2011 “100 Best Corporate Citizens List.” Freeport came in number 24 ahead of companies like Pepsico, Starbucks, and Disney. Companies were rated in seven categories including environment, human rights, and

employee relations. Freeport received its highest ranking in the human rights category. The company tied for fi fth in the category with Alcoa. A recent Arizona Daily Star story said that Freeport is still trying to fi ll 500 vacancies at its four sites in Arizona: Miami, Morenci, Safford, and Sierrita. Freeport shares were trading at $50.90 Tuesday morning.Gold Hawk The Oracle Ridge Copper Mine is on schedule to return to production, Gold Hawk Chairman and CEO Kevin Drover, said in a press release earlier this month.

The Mining Brief Work is moving on many fronts. The initial designs for a 10-million-ton dry stack tailings pile and plant area are complete. “Test work is also scheduled to begin an evaluation for a paste back-fi ll system. It is the Company’s desire to return as much as possible of new tailings generated by the planned operation back underground as feasible, thereby minimizing the mine’s environmental footprint,”

the release said. Gold Hawk also said that environmental studies are underway. The release stated, “Water quality sampling has begun … [and] two air quality and weather monitoring stations have been constructed.”Other mining news

Renewed exploration is proposed or underway at two more spots in southeastern Arizona.

Millrock Resources, one of the companies exploring in the Copper Creek area, announced it entered into an exploration agreement on the Rainville project. The project is located south of the Morenci mine. The agreement comes with an option to purchase. In Pinal County, Nevada-based Gryphon Resources Inc. is exploring the Cruce Property it purchased early this year.

Gryphon is searching for copper and gold documented by previous owners. “We’re pleased and cautiously optimistic about our progress with the Cruce Property,” President and CEO Alan Muller said in a press release. “In sum, our efforts to date continue to support our expectation that the Cruce Property has signifi cant gold and copper-porphyry potential.”

By John Hernandez Last week, the Mammoth-San Manuel Governing Board tabled a planned discussion/

action to approve sending a question for voter approval to the November 8, 2011 election. The issue in question

was regarding the Mammoth-San Manuel Unified School District joining the Pima County Joint Technological

Education District. The discussion was tabled at the request of San Manuel Junior-Senior High School

Board tables action on JTED proposalPrincipal John Ryan who needed to look into funding issues. The Arizona State Legislature made cuts in education in it’s latest budget that may impact the proposed project. Ryan did not know what cuts will have to be made but said they would be significant. Figures were unavailable at this time. Ryan is gathering information on the budget cuts but would need more time. The Board voted to table the discussion/action until more information could be gathered and a report made to the Board. The Governing Board approved the retirements of Macky Cordero, teacher for 21 years at San Manuel Junior-Senior High School, and Paul Dorgan, teacher First Avenue Elementary School (26 years). The resignation of Jerry Kyle, teacher Mammoth

Elementary STEM School, was also approved. The Board members thanked the teachers for all their hard work and voiced their gratitude. Donations to the School District were accepted including: $350 from the Freddy Burnham Family donated to the San Manuel High School Football Team. A Meade DS-114AT Reflecting Telescope was donated to the Mammoth Elementary STEM School by Betty and Ed Hughes. The telescope was valued at approximately $200. SaddleBrooke Community Outreach donated 20 cartons of paper valued at $588 to San Manuel Junior-Senior High School. The Board members asked the school staff to thank the donors. Mark Phelps told Ryan to make sure he thanks the district’s friends at SaddleBrooke for all the things they do for the district.

Community college presidents or their designated nominators may submit no more than two nominations per campus for this award. An independent panel of judges considers outstanding academic rigor, grade point average, academic and leadership awards, and engagement in college and community service in the selection process.

“We thank the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation for their vote of confidence in community college students by investing in their futures,” Dr. Rod Risley, executive director of Phi Theta Kappa, said. “Their support is especially welcome during this challenging economic climate, as more and more community college students need additional resources to help them complete their degrees.”

“The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” J. Mark Davis, president of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, explained. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa and make it possible for deserving students to achieve their educational goals.” Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society,

headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,270 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. She also earned recognition for the highest of all written scores at the Preliminary State Collegiate DECA Competition hosted by Scottsdale Community College. “I am truly honored by the nomination to the All-Arizona Academic Team,” she said. “There were so many qualified applicants I didn’t believe I stood a chance and almost did not fill out the application. This just goes to show you never know what you can accomplish until you try.” Originally from Illinois, Ruane boasts a 3.92 GPA and now calls Arizona City home. By William Loehr Asarco has partnered with the Foundation for Blind Children’s (FBC) to underwrite fi ve legs of Mike Armstrong’s historic trek across Arizona. Mike Armstrong is attempting to be the fi rst blind person to hike the Arizona Trail, which stretches from Mexico to Utah, approximately 800 miles. This route will take him through the nearby towns of Oracle, Kearny, and Superior and also by the Ray Mine. There are 43 Passages on the Arizona Trail and FBC is attempting to raise $1,000 for each passage. Asarco is a Regional Sponsor and as such, Asarco will be listed next to the fi ve passages it is sponsoring. This donation will allow fi ve blind students a chance to attend the FBC’s summer camp program. The Summer Camp is a unique camp for blind students and is often the only camp they will attend. The four, week-long camps are designed for complete immersion into four areas of development to produce independent young adults and raise their quality of life with a focus on Literacy

Having lost sight 14 years ago due to non-diabetic retinopathy, Armstrong has hiked the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim and set a world record by reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro with seven other blind hikers. Asarco’s Bill Loehr hiked in a mile to meet up with Mike and his two guides (Ben Cane and Yancey Herriage) and their support vehicle person (Anthony Herriage) just before reaching their 200 mile marker accomplishment. The pictures in the attachments are at the end of Passage #12 that started on Mt. Lemmon and fi nished at American Flag Trailhead - FR 38 near the town of Oracle. The trail begins at the Coronado National Memorial near the U.S.-Mexico border and terminates near the Arizona-Utah border north of Jacob Lake. The Arizona Trail is a primitive trail for hiking, equestrians, mountain biking, and even cross country skiing, showcasing the wide variety of mountain ranges

a lion’s share of adversity around her. “When the most difficult situations arose, I found it best to turn to fellow students and instructors,” Carbajal declared. “There is always help. We are not alone in our trials and tribulations. Never give up.” A mother of an 18-year-old son, Carbajal has had plenty of opportunities to give up as she draws closer to fulfilling her seemingly lifelong goal of becoming a nurse. She has never given in, however, since attending Pima Community College in 1993 where she earned a nurse’s assistant certificate. Carbajal then worked at the same local clinic, in two separate stints, from 1993 until 2008, before enrolling in the nursing program at CAC in January of 2009. “My family encouraged me to go back to school,” Carbajal explained. “It was close to home so it was a perfect fit.” Aside from the typical rigors of a collegiate nursing program, Carbajal met adversity, almost immediately, as her family endured varying maladies. In February of that year, Carbajal’s husband lost his job and remained unemployed until October. Two weeks later, however, her husband received even worse news – he was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Life became a juggling act for Carbajal. “At one point I was working on a BIO 181 project, helping a classmate with research for the project, and helping my

husband through his cancer treatment.” Things began to spin out of control for Carbajal after losing her sister-in-law in November of that year, while her husband’s kidney was removed in December. “Going to my husband’s appointments and trying to survive as a full-time student was tough,” she said. Financially, things weren’t much better and came to a head last September when the Carbajals nearly lost their home to foreclosure. Thanks to help from United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the state attorney general, the family was able to maintain the roof over its head. “Trying hard to avoid foreclosure proved to be a challenge. Turning to my friends, fellow classmates and instructors was my ultimate lifeline through this whole process.” Through all of these obstacles, though, Carbajal has weathered the proverbial

By John Hernandez The Mammoth-San Manuel Community School has been offering an exercise room that is open to the public. The open gym is located at San Manuel High School behind the auditorium, in a downstairs room. The gym is loaded with exercise equipment. There are free weights, versatile multiple position weight benches, multiple exercise weight machines, stationary bikes, recumbent exercise bikes, tread mills, and more - everything you need to get your body in shape for those summer bathing suits, your favorite sport or just to stay healthy. Larry Ramirez, Mammoth-San Manuel Community Schools director, would like to see the open gym return to its glory days when it was known as “The Pit.” They are calling it The Pit once again and would like the people in the community to utilize it as much as possible. The Pit is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It is open to men and women ages 16 and up. If you are under 18, you will need a permission slip from your parents. There is no charge for its use. “We are hoping in the future to have weightlifting competitions,” said Ramirez.

Come on over and get fit at the open gym

The Pit is also always in need of volunteers. For more information contact Ramirez at (520) 385-2337 ext. 113 or www.facebook.com/msmcommunityschools and [email protected].
