Here we are four months later. I trust you will enjoy this issue of Bullish Magazine.
2014 was an exciting year for Bulldogs with various dogs winning a group, group placement or Best in Show. In the UK Ch. Sealaville He’s Tyler ended the year with a group 3 and is also the top winning bulldog for 2014.
The head debate is ongoing and I have extracted some comments from the Bulldog Standard Dis-cussion group FCI based on a question I have asked to the group. Read this and other interesting arti-cles in this issue.

What’s there to say about bulldogs and Christmas?
Christmas is the time of the year to make our home cozy and ready for fun days with family and friends. That means a lot of shopping; a better Christmas tree than the year before, new socks for all the pres-ents, a present for everyone, including our bulldog and a Christmas dinner also better than last year. That means a lot of stress for us as bulldog owners. So much to think about......
For our bulldogs it’s the most wonderful time of the year.........because it means the bosses are at home all day, so they can play with us when we want.
CHRISTMAS STORY
Bullish magazine | December 2014 | 33
Annette Annette| CHRISTMAS STORY
We bulldogs also get a present from under the tree....which toy should it be this year.....a new rope or a new bear to cuddle with? And family is com-ing over ....so we get so much attention from every-one......we can hug with the ones we like! And we can tease the ones we don’t like.
Our bosses have all the time to spoil us even more. So we expect a real Christmas dinner. Not the usual beef, salmon, lamb, chicken in our bowl but a re-al Christmas worthy dinner. We expect our female boss to do better than last year.
Christmas means a lot of shopping and fun with family

Annette | CHRISTMAS STORY
And when we are done its time to relax on the couch. And put our four legs high in the air and enjoy. To tease and get more room on the couch, sometimes we fart just a little.
But we can’t help that because our boss sometimes does the same. We look at him with our most inno-cent face and it works! He can’t be mad at us.
The only strange thing about Christmas is that we understand the house needs decoration, but why do we need to be dressed up also? We are pretty from our selves. So we don’t need Christmas bells around our neck and reindeer antlers on our head. It makes us feel funny and look like a fool. On the other hand our boss glances when we look this way, so maybe we should let it happen. They do so much for us.
Third Christmas day our bosses need time outside. They have eaten too much and want to sniff fresh air so every year we go to the woods all together. That means time for fun, to play with other dogs and go crazy. Time to pick up sticks, to splatter through muddy pools and don’t listen when our bosses call us. We pretend we don’t hear them. Af-terwards we are all satisfied and drink our water in front of the fireplace. We love it!
Bullish magazine | December 2014 | 35
Annette| CHRISTMAS STORY
For us these Christmas days are the best! We ap-preciate it a lot that our bosses do everything for us, that they spoil us even more. We feel so lucky. It makes us sad that not every bulldog is that fortu-nate. Not every dog has the chance to let his boss smile when he does funny things. Not every dog gets a special Christmas dinner. When we get one wish, we would change that! And make sure every dog gets his own heaven on earth he deserves.
Happy holidays and have wonderful Christmas with your bulldogs.

Bulldogs Introduction to Barn Hunt
First off let me start by describing Barn Hunt. It was initially a earthdog event created for terriers. The Barn Hunt Association LLC has since created a sanctioned sport open to any dog, of any size, type, breed or mix. The dogs purpose must be to rid barns homes and properties of vermin. There are multiple levels of difficulty from Instinct through Master and beyond.
This past summer two of our dogs successfully com-pleted the Instinct levels of Barn Hunt. The area they work in is fenced and filled with bales of straw with a straw base. The dog may not relieve himself in the working area or it’s an automatic disqualification.

They work off leash. You are allowed to talk to your dog and encourage them.
In order for your dog to pass, you have to call out “rat” when your dog has found the tube which houses the live rat. There are three tubes. All three tubes are visible but you cannot see inside them. One hous-es a live rat. One has decoy bedding. One is empty. You have one minute to complete the course.
As the dog moves up to the Novice level the tubes are hidden in the bales of straw and the dog must successfully complete a tunnel and climb through the bales. As the levels increase, so do the number of tubes with rats and the number of decoy tubes. In the masters level the handler doesn’t even know

how many rats and of course those tunnels and climbs are more challenging as well. Barn Hunt is a fun sport that’s well worth checking out.

Beauty and Brains… The Bulldog
“Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspi-rations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.” Louisa May Alcott
I have been owned and loved by Bulldogs for the past 15 years. However, my passion and desire to show and compete did not begin to reach fruition until 2013, with the addition of Gucci (Majestic Gor-geous Gucci BN, RN, CGC) to my family. Gucci is co-owned by myself and Shalisa Neely of Majestic Bull-dogs. Gucci is a very high energy Bulldog in need of a “job(s)” to keep her mind and body active, happy, and healthy.

On a bit of a whim, I began training her towards the goal of achiev-ing her AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title. I quickly discovered her to be a very willing and eager learner, and within a couple of months we achieved the title and were hooked!
Inspired greatly by the extraordinary feats and accomplishments of Cheryl Knapp and her Sittingbullies Bulldogs, Gucci and I began training towards titles in AKC Rally and Obedience. In less than a year and a half (with several months off in the middle for materni-ty leave), Gucci has earned her Rally Novice (RN), Beginner Novice (BN), and one leg towards her companion dog (CD) title.
She finished her BN title with a score of 197/200 and first in her class at an all breed obedience trial.

Working and competing with Gucci has devel-oped an amazing bond and relationship between us. Though Bulldogs sometimes get a bad rap as being “stubborn” and difficult to train, I have found quite the opposite to be true. They are incredibly smart and capable of holding their own and ex-celling in all kinds of performance events… obedi-ence, rally, agility, lure coursing, carting, dock div-ing, and much more!
While I, myself, am just beginning to delve into the wide world of dog sports, there are quite a few amazing people and Bulldogs out there achiev-ing titles and ribbons, and inspiring me to great-er heights! If you have even the slightest desire or inclination to pursue these sports with your Bull-dog(s), I can assure you, you will not regret it! For those who have been performing and achieving at levels I can only now hope and dream towards, we would LOVE to hear of your stories and achieve-ments here!
They are fun, challenging, bond-forming, and show the rest of the world that Bulldogs are so much more than just a pretty face!

When talking, baiting, and all your other efforts fail to get your puppy to move, try this. Pick out an ob-ject to look at and start walking.
Don’t look down at the puppy (that’s hard to do), but keep walking at a normal pace, looking at the object. Talk to him but don’t look down.
I’ve never had it fail, that once you stop looking down, he will break into a gait. Again, this is for practice and preparing for the ring.
Don’t do this in the show ring and don’t make the judge your object. I told someone to try this and

“I think this picture posted by Alberto Toledo is quite important. Many or most of the dogs today would actually fit the profile of the top dog. Its not possible to lay a pencil on this dogs face as the oc-ciput will never be reached. Your opinion?”
Some of the comments received:
Emma Jackarhys Simpson
“Yes think your right .. Many today don’t have enough height in skull to achieve perfect layback”

Sara Lamont
“This observation is one of my main bones of con-tentions with the U.S images and had many a dis-cussion with Elizabeth Hugo Milam about it! First-ly the lower image the ears are alert with would change the profile (shortening the Skull).
In the UK the standards details a flat forehead and I assume this is interpreted more with the top im-age. However a shelved head is truly flat and from my observations most in the UK rise to the ears plus the frontal bones are better positioned. That said we do have champs with incorrect heads!!”
136 | December 2014 | Bullish magazine
Theo Koekemoer | THE HEAD DEBATE
Robin L. Stansell
“This is the most common head fault seen today. “
Elizabeth Hugo Milam
“I first started noticing the “shelved “ foreheads back in the late 80’s. This comparison image Albert posted is one I created from an image that Betty drew for either an old Bulldogger article or a Divi-sion 1 newsletter (I don’t recall now) and an image from the illustrated guide. I added that line from eye corner to lower jaw to show depth there al-though it has nothing to do with this comparisons of the foreheads ( we used to have a Yahoo group that was very much like these Facebook pages).
The wording from the original British standard (BCA standard reads similarly).
Viewed at the side ,the head should appear very, high.....The forehead should be flat, neither promi-nent nor overhanging the face.
Key words are “very high” forehead “flat” and not prominent.
The “shelf “ heads don’t have good height, the fore-heads are prominent and in some cases, overhang the face.”
Bullish magazine | December 2014 | 137
Theo Koekemoer | THE HEAD DEBATE
Elizabeth Hugo Milam
“And yes, ears alert make a difference.
A critical point to consider is the furrow. A dog with a brow or a ride or a shelf often does not have a traceable furrow.”
Robin L. Stansell
“I think it is important to remember to check layback in the center up the furrow as the brow bulges can change the im-age from a side view. With that being said, overdone brow bulges can spoil the expression.”
Sara Lamont
“The standard States Ears should be set high.”
Elizabeth Hugo Milam
“Best way to determine set is when the ears are alert. Throw a sqeek toy in front of that dog and the whole profile will change”.
Daniel Caballero
“It took me a while to understand true head shape, but once you get it... Now one of the things I value is that flat high long forehead”.
