Rabbi’s Corner As I mentioned last week in the bulletin, our shul has

taken a major step forward in hiring a bookkeeper/administrative

assistant. This is an exciting change for YIWH and will help to

ensure that our shul is run in a smooth and professional fashion

meeting your needs as congregants.

Martha Sperandio, our new bookkeeper began working

for a few hours in shul this week. We spent some time reviewing

what kinds of things go on in the shul, what kinds of checks she

will be receiving and what kind of bills she will be paying. I

tried to familiarize Martha with some of the Hebrew terms that

are used a lot by members of our shul like “Shabbos”, “Shul”,

Kiddush”, “Yarzeit” so that she will understand some of the nota-

tions that come in on checks and acknowledgements. We also

reviewed some of the major Jewish institutions in town and their

respective leaders because they are all an integral part of the way

our shul functions. A temporary office space has been built for

Martha in the upstairs coatroom with a fold-down desk that Gene

built and a filing cabinet that will be ordered shortly. Elie Wolfe

and Steve Luger are working on getting a computer, phone, and

printer/scanner all set up for Martha as well. Next week Martha

will be meeting with David Cohen and Ted Zablotsky to go over

the various tasks that she will be doing, strategizing about how to

best arrange all the information in the Quickbooks program that

our shul has, and setting up a system of checks and balances for

security.

Martha is very talented and I am sure you will all come

to enjoy working with her in the context of making our shul a

more successful place.

I would like to take this opportunity again to really speak

about how amazingly generous David Cohen has been with his

time. Taking care of all the shul finances is a huge responsibility

that takes so much time. David’s term as treasurer (after a long

run) was over a year ago and yet he so graciously stayed on and

did all he could to keep the shul functioning. Thanks SO much

for your time and dedication.

One of the things we have done in preparation for Mar-

tha’s work in shul is CLEAN THE COATROOM. We have

cleaned it and thrown away all the garbage and old papers that

were lying around.

GIVEN AWAY TO CHARITY.

WELCOME TO OUR BOOKEEPER!

MARTHA SPERANDIO

As you all know, last summer at the Mem-bership Meeting the membership voted to have YIWH hire a bookkeeper on a part time basis to help out with some of the financial tasks as well as administrative tasks within the shul. This is an exciting step forward for YIWH and will help to ensure that our shul is run in a smooth and pro-fessional fashion meeting your needs as congre-gants. Thanks SO VERY MUCH to David Cohen for agreeing to stay on all these extra months while we looked for a suitable candidate Ted, Gene, Ju-dith, and I interviewed many candidates and about a month ago decided to hire Martha Speran-dio. Martha is a wonderful lady who is so commit-ted, so friendly and approachable, and so skilled at working as a bookkeeper,

Martha has been incredibly flexible and ac-commodating at working with us to prepare for her start date. Martha will be starting THIS WEEK. She will be working at YIWH on Thursdays and Fridays every week and right now we are in the process of figuring out what the best hours are for her to work on those days. We need a bit of time to have her meet with David Cohen and Ted and get fully setup and acclimated. We will be in touch with you letting you know more infor-mation about how to reach Martha, when she will be in the shul, and what kinds of services she will be able to offer each of you. Martha has also agreed to come to join us after davening one week on Shabbat to be able to meet all of you at Kiddush and get to know YIWH. We will let you know when she will be coming as soon as we know. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Rabbi Weinberg

Page 3 Celebrate on the Anniversary of Death? Why all the joy on the day of the passing of the great sage Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai? By Dovid Zaklikowski - www.chabad.org Dear Rabbi, Every year on the holiday of Lag BaOmer, we go to the park, have bonfires and live music and many celebrations. I never understood this. Are we supposed to have celebrations on the anniversary of someone’s passing? Answer: Lag BaOmer marks the passing of the great sage, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, who lived in the 2nd century. Rabbi Shimon was the first to publicly teach the mystical dimension of Judaism and is the author of the Zohar, the classic work of Kabbalah. On the day of his passing, Rabbi Shimon instructed his disciples to mark the date as “the day of my joy.”1 “Yahrtzeit” Day of Passing The codifiers of Jewish law mark the anniversary of someone’s passing, known as the Yahrtzeit, as a day of intro-spection and seriousness, when close relatives of the deceased refrain from joining a wedding,2 and some have the custom to fast.3 Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried, in his abridged code of Jewish law, sums it up this way: It is a time to be inspired to return to G‑d, to take a look at one’s deeds and to make changes in one’s life. Through this the souls of one’s parents will have merit in the world above.4 The same would apply to the Yahrtzeits of the righteous, such as the day of Moses’ passing, which is marked by many as a fast day and day of introspection. See Yahrzeit: Memorial Anniversary for the customs of this day. The Kabbalists explained that the day of a person’s passing is a time when the soul is once again judged, and his or her merits are calculated, and the soul is then elevated to a more spiritual level in heaven. Therefore, it has become a cus-tom to do good deeds and learn Jewish texts to bring merit and spiritual pleasure to the deceased person’s soul.5 In Hassidic circles the custom is not to be overtly depressed or saddened on the day of the passing; rather the day is marked in a more positive and pleasant manner by remembering and learning from the individual’s life and good deeds.6 How Could We Celebrate? However, Rabbi Shimon did specifically ask his followers to be joyous on his Yahrtzeit; and the rule is that when one asks that the solemn part of the Yahrtzeit be abandoned, we listen to the request.7 Therefore, it is permitted to be joyous and celebrate on this day.8 On the day of a person‘s passing, his or her entire lifework, good deeds and teachings ascend to higher spiritual realms. It is a time when one’s soul reconnects to higher levels of G dliness, the source of life.9 The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, explains that this is the reason Rabbi Shimon asked that this day be remembered as a joyous day; to mark the elevation of his soul to higher spiritual levels.10 The wish of the great sage, Rabbi Shimon, is adhered to in Jewish communities across the globe. We “remember and do”11 by learning about and celebrating the life and teachings of Rabbi Shimon. See What Is Lag BaOmer? from our section on the Holiday of Lag BaOmer.
