BREAKING OPEN THE WORD

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

September 14, 2014 First Reading: Numbers 21:4b-9 The Jews were complaining against God and Moses of the tiring journey through the desert. The Lord punished them for such complaints with the bite of deadly serpents. After hearing the prayers of Moses for his people, the Lord instructed Moses to cure those who became ill with a bronze serpent mounted to a pole for them to see. Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 In this letter to the Philippians, Paul tells us how Jesus set aside his form of equality to God and took on a humble, human form-obedient even unto death. God the Father greatly exalted Jesus because of this. Gospel: John 3:13-17 As today’s first reading tells us of Moses raising the bronze serpent in the desert for those to be cured, Jesus says, too, that the Son of Man should be lifted up for all to see so the world might be saved and he who believes in him might enjoy eternal life.

Consider/Reflect This feast is called the “Exaltation of the Holy Cross” because it celebrates the cross as the occasion of Jesus’ being lifted up to God to be a sign of the world’s salvation. In some paradoxical way, it is in his humiliation that Jesus most clearly shows us the nature of divine love. In coming to know and believe in this love, we are healed and given eternal life. Just as the sight of the bronze serpent saved the Israelites from the venom of the seraph, so too our coming to “see” Jesus in faith heals us of the deadly poison of sin. What we see in Jesus we see also in our own lives. In a way that we cannot always understand, the crosses that we encounter in our lives lift us nearer to God, provided that we embrace them in the faith that Jesus has transformed the meaning of suffering. If in the midst of suffering and disaster we can look to the one who was raised up on the cross for our salvation, we will not perish but have eternal life. Are there experiences in my life when I have felt that distress or suffering have ultimately drawn me closer to God?

The Respect Life Corner

The Respect Life Ministry Committee Meets:

the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Faith Formation Center @1:30 PM The following was an article in THE NATIONAL CATHOIC REGISTER:

BABIES IN THE WOMB ''Everything that a newborn baby does, a fetus has pretty much done already" said Dr. Bill Fifer, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University and a leading expect on fetal and newborn learning. "They're exquisitely able to sense information over all parts of their body, although some are more sensitive than others, like around the mouth, around the feet, around the hands." Also, babies appear to recognize nursery rhymes even before they are born, according to a recent study published in the journal of Infant Behavior and Development. University of Florida researchers asked pregnant women in their third trimester to read classic verses to their bellies twice a day for several weeks. In utero, the baby's heart rate slowed when the rhyme was read by Mom. The Respect Life Committee of St. Theresa will begin our monthly meetings again on September 18 (the third Thursday of each month). If you are interested in becoming a member of Respect Life, we need you and would love to have you!

Pastoral Council Suggestion Box

Here are some questions &

answers from our suggestion box:

1. When saying the Our Father during Mass,

what should our hands be doing? You see hand holding, hands raised, etc. What’s the correct position?

Answer: The Communion Rite during Mass begins with the Lord’s Prayer. In the Lord’s Prayer, a petition is made for daily food, which for Christians means preeminently the Eucharistic bread, and also for purification from sin, so that what is holy, may in fact, be given to those who are holy. This is the prayer of the Christian family. It is the prayer that Jesus taught the disciples and many view the Lord’s Prayer as the perfect prayer.

During the celebration of Mass, the priest prays with his hands extended and lifted upwards. This posture is the "Orans" (Latin: praying) and is common to almost all ancient religions as an outward sign of prayer to God. This position of praying indicates that the priest is praying on behalf of all the people gathered, serving as pastor of the flock. As such, the rubrics (the rules that govern exactly what is to be done during the celebration of the mass) reserve “the Orans” posture of prayer only for the Priest presiding at Mass and any Priest Concelebrants joining him at the Altar. The Priest Celebrant is the only person called to pray in this posture. Although it has become a common practice in American parishes for people to hold hands during this prayer, the appropriate posture for the community in prayer is folding their hands together in simple supplication before the Lord.

2. Is it possible to keep the Chapel opened until

8:00 PM instead of 4:00 PM?

Answer: Last year, as part of our energy initiative, we decided to close the main Church (so as not to heat or light the large worship space all day long) and only keep the Daily Chapel opened for private prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Originally, it was opened until 8:00 PM however with the time change and the daylight hours shortened, it was dark in the chapel at 5:00 PM. This left the Chapel vulnerable to some acts of vandalism therefore we were forced to lock the Chapel at 4:00 PM when the Staff leaves for the day.
