Report from the “Harkins Ham Shack.” a.k.a. W7ASCNew volunteers, SK, donations and waiting to appear in QST

Yes, we have lost some of our volunteers who are now SK.Condolences to their families. Their services through the yearshave been a major factor in the popularity of the Station.

The Station has received Ham gear from the estate ofRichard Greatorex, W7KSU (SK). Now we need to decide thedisposition, as some of that gear may be an improvement overour present configuration. The inventory currently takes up alot of space in a garage belonging to one of our longtimevolunteers. Some of it might appear at an upcoming Hamfest.

Visitors continue to bring surprises! An older gentlemanwalked, silently, into the Station and put his hand on the CWkey. Nothing said – no greeting. Just some Morse code thatspelled out his name in perfect rhythm. We addressed him bythat name and welcomed him, asking where he had learnedthat skill. Well – he had spent a career as a railroad telegrapher, retiring in 1961 when the railroad had ended the use of thetelegraph. He was no longer needed once radios were issuedto the train crews. It was a real treat to hear Morse as sent bya pro!

Perhaps you recall reading that one of our volunteers, Steve, had written an article for QST – and that it had been acceptedfor publication. We have been scanning each new QST issuefor that article in order to spread the word on some of the nets. But no article has appeared as yet! Steve did call QST to askabout a publication date. He was informed that the article is stillon the list for “future publication,” but no specific issue hasbeen selected. So we must continue to wait and watch as eachnew issue rolls out.

To those of you, faithful ADAW readers, who realize thatthe underlying theme of this W7ASC newsletter is that it is funto volunteer at the station, we extend a suggestion. Eventhough you are still working, and your time is spent either in thesalt mines or at home with family, here is the thought. If youknow of a Ham who has time on his or her hands, possibly asa retiree, and they are spending time with a bag of pretzels infront of the TV, unable to become radio active for whatever thereason, volunteering is a better option. Get them out of thatrecliner and off to the Science Center. Their lives will, onceagain, have a purpose. You will probably add years to theirlives. Do that good deed – go over the list of stay-at-home

Hams that you know. Encourage them to visit the station at theScience Center. You will have performed your good deed thatwill be appreciated by that Ham, probably by their family, andcertainly by those visitors that they meet. Do not acceptexcuses! Bob KG7QJ will schedule them with a moreexperienced volunteer. Any license level is welcome.Operating privileges, at the station, are based on the highestlicense level present. A Tech who is paired with an Extra canoperate as if they, too, held that Expert ticket. Your task is tosimply get that Ham to make that first visit to W7ASC withinthe Arizona Science Center at Sixth Street and Washington inPhoenix.

The Arizona Science Center attracts people from a widevariety of locations. Visitors are attracted from most of theStates, but also from many foreign lands. During the last weekof July the station was visited by a boy from Taiwan, a familyfrom Israel, some girls from Kenya and a couple from England. Some knew about Ham Radio, but most did not. The W7ASCvolunteers did their best to fill that knowledge vacuum, supplementing the conversation with flyers that are availablefor that purpose. A shift at W7ASC is often like a world tour. And, in place of a passport, one needs only to hold a Hamlicense. We are working on our eyeball DXCC!

Want to get in on the fun? Call Bob KG7QJ at 480-961-1109,complete the one-page application and feel your life change forthe better.

Contributions to this newsletter are welcome. Send them toyour faithful scribe W4CIH Jean [email protected]

It all started about four years ago with eight hams from theMaricopa area having breakfast on Saturday mornings. Sevenof those hams are still members of what is now the MaricopaAmateur Radio Association. We have grown to 86 members, registered as an ARRL affiliated club, and legally incorporatedas a 501 (C)3 corporation. And that’s just the start of it.

We realized that there was a lot of interest from localresidents in getting their license. One of the things thatpresented an obstacle was the time it took to drive to ascheduled VE session in the Phoenix metropolitan area.Depending on what part of the Maricopa area someone livedin, that drive could be over an hour. We solved that problem byencouraging members to qualify as volunteer examiners. Wenow have thirteen VEs and have held 36 exam sessionsresulting in 40 new licensees. We have held “on demand”individual sessions so that just one potential ham could testlocally at a time and location that worked for them. We havewatched some of our new members go from Technician toExtra Class licensees testing entirely through the club VEprogram.

Our membership is active and vibrant. We have donepresentations in front of the Maricopa city council encouragingthem to embrace activities like CERT. We have been presentat our annual Salsa Fest for the last three years with a booththat promotes amateur radio and features a GOTA station. Our club station, WY7H, has participated in Field Day for thelast three years. This year, we will host the first Maricopahamfest on October 17.

In just a few months we were able to raise the money topurchase three Yaesu DR-1 System Fusion digital repeaters toreplace the old GE units that had been donated to us. Takingadvantage of the Yaesu special pricing, we now have digitalcapability on 145.210 MHz (PL 162.2) and 449.125 (PL136.5). We are still working on the third repeater and on linkingthe first two. You can usually find us on the two-meterfrequency.

Another factor that’s contributed to our membership is thatthe local Maricopa Radio Shack owners, Ron Basle,KG7MUV, and Josh Basle, KG7KEC, have embraced andpromoted amateur radio in our area. The store sells BaofengHTs and licensing manuals that have given many of ourmembers their first exposure to ham radio. In addition, “The

Shack” is a frequent gathering place for local hams. At almostany time the store is open, you can find a ham either workingin the store or stopping by to visit. It’s not unusual for someoneto take their exam there.

We have a web site at www.copahams.org and a ham radioforum at w6sdm.net/forum. Anyone is welcome to stop by,read, and post. Our meetings are the last Saturday of eachmonth, at a location posted on our web site.

We are honored to be a monthly contributor to ArizonaDesert Aire Waves. Our club is relatively new, but ourmembership has hams who were first licensed 50 years ago.Our club holds to the values of community service, elmering, and enjoying the hobby of amateur radio.

The Arizona Amateur Radio Club is no longer homeless!! Howstrange it has been since April 25, 2015, when we lost ourfamiliar home among the many dolls’ bodies used by AmericanRed Cross trainees at the Bethany Home and I-17 building. Itcertainly had been home, and we packed up and left it forever, becoming homeless the end of April. Actually the BethanyHome Red Cross Building was the second Red Cross buildingour club has used for meetings. The one before I-17 was at1510 E. Flower Street (about 16th St & Osborn). I think thatbuilding is now used by Hospice of the Valley. Our club helpedmove equipment and antennas that time also. The new RedCross Building will be the third Red Cross Building we will haveused for meetings.

Although we did some setup at the new American Red CrossBuilding the weekend of May 2, they were not ready for us atthe new building. So on May 14, and again on June 11, we metat the New World Education Center, a place where memberJohn Adams, K6JWA, works. We still felt homeless. Field Daywas fast approaching (June 27-28). The New WorldEducation Center was not suitable for FD’s antennarequirements, and the new Red Cross Building was still notready for us, so FD was held in an office building at Haydenand McDowell Roads in Scottsdale. FD was successful, butwe were actually in unfamiliar territory in our “foster” home. Not like the good ole days in the old Red Cross Building. July9, we met, again temporarily, at the New World EducationCenter. On August 13, after 3 ½ months of homelessness, wenow have a home at the new American Red Cross Building at4747 N. 22nd Street. Our meetings and VE sessions will beheld in the Clara Barton Room there, a great home for theAARC. Parking is excellent. The room is ideal. We are nolonger homeless.

By the time you read this, our August meeting will be history. We probably will have enjoyed a presentation on wire antennasgiven by Dave Zinder, W7PMD. Dave gave this presentationat the Williams hamfest, and it is certainly one which memberswho may have missed the Williams event need to see. Howmuch one misses by not attending the special amateur radioevents that are available to us!! I look forward to theSouthwestern Division Convention in Torrance, CASeptember 11-13. Maybe it is time for many of our members

Williams Hamfest Continued from Previous Column THE WILLIAMS HAMFESTThe Williams Hamfest was a special event! What made it sospecial? Here’s my list of highlights:

    * A Special Events Station (SES): W7W* Ideal weather (ARCA can’t take credit for that)* The presence of N6VI, Marty Woll (Vice Director for the

Southwestern Division of the ARRL), and WU6D, CarlGardenias (Orange Section Manager).

    * A tent large enough to accommodate meetings andtechnical sessions.

    * Vendors and tailgaters* A more than successful balloon launch* A delicious barbecue dinner and a well-deserved Ham of

the Year honor given to Jeff Hanna, WB7RFY* Excellent coordination of the event by ARCAI enjoyed operating the SES for several hours, telling the

world about the Williams Hamfest and all its activities. Severalother amateur radio operators spent time on the station also. Itwas not the first time ARCA has had an SES at the Julyhamfest, but I enjoyed being a part of its operations this year.

It was a pleasure to have Marty (N6VI) and Carl (WU6D)join us in Williams this year. They were able to join RobertSpencer, KE8DM, in the ARRL Forum and give additionalinput regarding amateur radio developments. Their personalinteraction with attendees during the three days was muchappreciated.

This year ARCA had a large tent which was used formeetings and sessions. Although it was not easy to assemble,it was adequate for our purposes. You’ve probably seen thephoto of poor Alex, grandson of John Kainrath, K7JHK, withhis bandaged thumb after his injury which resulted from helpingassemble the tent. He’s recovered now. The tent provided aplace for seven tech sessions, Cliff Hauser’s T33 DXpeditionpresentation, and three meetings. It was a definite asset.

It seems to me that the number of vendors and tailgaters wasfewer than previous years, but there were still bargains to behad.

A highlight of the day was the balloon launch. It wasobserved by a large crowd of visitors and then progress wasreported on a video monitor in the main hall. The balloonreached an altitude of more than 100,000 feet and the payloadwas later recovered by the team and brought back to thehamfest. A donation jar was passed among the observers atthe time of the launch which provided some financial supportfor the balloon operation.

Needless to say the barbecue at the Railside RV Ranch wasexcellent, as it is every year. Jeff Hanna, WB7RFY, becamethe new Ham of the Year. Congratulations to this verydeserving ham. Congratulations also to ARCA who once againworked more diligently than anyone can imagine to put

together this very special weekend at Williams. The new ARCA officers are:

    TBARC Field Day 2015

  • Well, after record-breaking temperatures the past fewweeks, fall (and hopefully cooler temperatures) are just aroundthe corner. Oh how we’re fondly remembering the coolevenings of Field Day just a few short months ago! But soonthe snowbirds will be returning, waiting lines at restaurants willtriple in size, as well as the number of Buicks driving aroundArizona. How can you not love it!?! At 4x4 Ham it’s been aquiet summer. We’ve enjoyed a few trail runs, to include theGas Pipeline Night Run and a run up the back way to CrownKing; however, the summer heat has driven many to the higherelevations, or running to the coast for a reprieve!

Plans are underway for our annual fall trip to activate the 80-foot tall discone antenna at the Titan Missile Museum inSahuarita, AZ south of Tucson. We’re targeting a Saturday inOctober or November to travel to TMM, depending on ARRLand other contest schedules, as well as participant availability. For those who have never been to the Titan Missile Museum,it’s a wonderful amateur radio operating experience, as well asa great glimpse into the Cold War history of the United States.TMM was established on the site of one of the Titan nuclearmissile silos deployed throughout the US during the Cold War.A key part of each silo was its HF communications suite. Themuseum in Sahuarita is home to an 80-foot tall discone HFantenna, which is maintained through the generous efforts andcooperation of the Green Valley Amateur Radio Club. Theantenna is quite broad banded and has a nearly 1:1 SWRresponse from 6-28MHz. The antenna is available for amateuroperations by simply signing a logbook at the museum frontdesk. A coaxial cable connected to the antenna is housed in ametal box at the base of the antenna. All you need to bring isa radio, a power source, chairs, and a sunshade and you’ll beamazed at what this antenna can do! In addition to radiooperations, the museum offers a wonderful guided tour of themissile silo complex you won’t want to miss! The TMM trip hasbecome an annual fall event for 4x4 Ham. All are invited toattend! Check out the forums at http://www.4x4ham.com forthe final date and details on the 2015 Titan Missile Museum trip.Hope to see you there!

In other news, for the month of September, the 4x4 HamWednesday Night Weekly Net regularly held on the ARA’sMetrolink System will move to the 444.300MHz machinelocated on Chase Tower in downtown Phoenix. This move willallow hams outside the Phoenix metro area to participate in the

    4x4 HAM Update

net. Hams wishing to join the net outside the metro area can doso by connecting to IRLP Node 9251 on the WesternReflector, or by connecting to the Echolink Node 479886, the*WORLD conference server. We hope this allows broaderparticipation by 4x4 Ham members at large. Again, all arewelcome to join us each Wednesday in September at 8:15pmArizona time (Thursday at 0315Z) for the weekly 4x4 HamNet on the 444.300MHz machine, or via IRLP/Echolink.

That’s it for this month. Everyone try to stay cool . . . fall isjust around the corner!

Public Service Season officially starts August 29th with BarnBurner in Flagstaff. MCECG has 32 events on the schedulebetween August 2015 and May 2016. Many public serviceevents are conducted on repeaters and are one of the primarypurposes that ARA has repeaters on the air. Also, activationslike the Skywarn Net and AEN-MAR nets activate throughoutthe year.

September is National Preparedness Month sponsored byFEMA’s Ready Campaign. Patriot Day is observedSeptember 11th of each year, in memory of the 2,977 killed inthe 2001 September 11 attacks. The Arizona Emergency Net– Maricopa was born on the first Monday of September, 9years ago. That wasn’t a coincidence.

Prepare for natural disaster, personal disaster, terroristaction, or anything else that threatens our way of life.Preparedness means taking responsibility for your own well-being instead of expecting others to take care of you. It’s aphilosophy of independence and interdependence. But beingprepared also means being ready to help others from a mind setof service. The Boy Scouts are based on the principle ofgrowing up young men by emphasizing self-reliance,accomplishment, character, and service. Besides, preparingcan be fun, as demonstrated on the net last night.

Say good-bye to the old and welcome to the new, as weretire the wiki site and introduce a new name for our club website at superstitionarc.org. It is designed to work on mobile anddesktop devices alike. We would like to thank Dale, N7QJK,for his work on both this and our SuperFest hamfest site. Dalewould like to thank all of those who helped with suggestions andinput, as well as everyone who helped test the new club site.

Check out our 147.120 repeater’s coverage, especially tothe west. Points south of the town of Maricopa, and places asfar away as Sun City, Wickenburg, Mt Ord, even PrescottValley have been heard. Mobile/portable coverage is possiblethroughout a major portion of the east valley. I would be curiousto see if we cover into Gila Bend—our ground-level repeaterin the past has covered along Interstate 8 west to shy of GilaBend, with some expected dead spots due to local terrain.

Our link project just needs a break in the summer heat forour tower climbers to hang the new antennas that will completethe link between the local 449.600 UHF repeater and theUsery 147.120 on VHF. We are looking at a date in Septemberto wrap this up. The UHF repeater will fill to the south whilethe VHF repeater covers other directions far better than everbefore.

Schedule Change: Our Summits On The Air activity willnow always fall on the Saturday following our club meeting, weather permitting. This change was announced by BrianBetz, W7JET, and has been reflected in the calendar onsuperstitionarc.org.

The club has had some excellent Public Safetypresentations for the July and August club meetings, with Ed,K7EDT showing us first-hand footage of the June Kearnyriver bottom fire in a well-attended July meeting. Ed, thePostmaster in Kearny, pressed his CERT training into playwhen the fire erupted behind the storefronts across the street. He was equipped with a dash cam so he was able to show usprecisely what the folks in Kearny were dealing with. August’smeeting presentation was an interactive, hands-on, simulatedemergency communications net, hosted by Mike PulleyWB4ZKA, also known as “WB4EIEIO,” on the humorousside of things. We had an attendance of about 50, going bythree fully-filled sign-in sheets and the start of a fourth!

We are looking for possibly an ARRL volunteer attorney orsomething about lightning if we can’t get the attorney forSeptember. Should be a dandy. Listen on the Wednesday nightnet for our September presentation, on 147.120.

Hamfest ticket sales have been brisk, both online and atclub meetings. Hats off to the Hamfest crew led by JD,KF7VOX in preparation for the December 5 festivities atMesa Community College.

Silent KeyI am sad to report that Alan Perysian KD7TOM passed awayfrom an automobile accident on 8/12/15. Those of you who donot recognize his name or call, Alan was at just about everyclub meeting. He always had his grandson Nick with him. Nickwas our club youth committee chairperson. We, the board, were fortunate to have seen Alan at this week’s boardmeeting. He will be greatly missed. I ask to keep Alan and hisfamily in your thoughts and prayers . . .

After our very busy cleanup of the repeater site last month, things are very quiet for the MMRG. We’re back to normalwith our net and our usual unofficial contacts betweenmembers, but other than the net, no official activities haveoccurred during this past month.

Many members attended the Williams Hamfest, July 25-26,and Bob, K7POF reports having sold many telephone dialsthere. Why would anyone want to buy old telephone dials???Glad he sold them, because a couple of them were mine, andI received a $10 bill from him without having to do any workfor it.

While on the Williams hamfest grounds we noted that the147.000 Mingus Repeater was audible, but one had to look fora hot spot to get a signal from it with decent quieting.

In my opinion, the best part of a hamfest is the opportunityto see fellow hams in a casual environment. Williams was oneof our unofficial get-togethers. We meet officially once a year,in the month of May.

Hi friends,I don’t know about you, but I am looking forward to somecooler weather. We have had a few monsoon storms lately thathave cooled us off a bit and brought some much needed rain.I hope we get a few more storms before the season is over. Ijust hope they don’t do as much damage as the last one. Wehad a large limb break off from one of our tall eucalyptus trees.Of course it could not have fallen in a worse place - right on topof our pool equipment. Oh well. The filter was quite old, but itwas working just fine.

My tower has been standing since 1987 and has weatheredmany wind storms. It came through just fine on this last blast.I have not heard from any of you guys out there about any winddamage. If you have had some, let us know so we can allsympathize with you and lend you a hand.

We had a great program by Chris Trimble, KG7FEG at theAugust general meeting. His presentation was on a program heis into at Scottsdale Community College. He graduated fromSCC a few years ago and is currently taking classes incomputer science. As if that isn’t enough hard work, he is alsovolunteering some time with the Biology Department in aprogram to teach elementary students about the many desertdwellers we live with. They have 57 different species ofreptiles, insects, and fish, but no mammals. He described indetail how the volunteers feed all of the critters and where thefood comes from. They do not go the Pet Smart for that. Theygather the food from nature itself. We all learned a great dealfrom Chris’s outstanding program.

The program for the September General Club Meeting hasnot been announced yet. The decision will be made shortly andposted on the club web site. www.scottsdalearc.org.

The club Tuesday night net has been well attended recently.Everyone gets a chance to tell the rest of us what they havebeen up to lately and sometimes I come up with a simplequestion for everyone. I know the VHF and UHF repeatershave been pretty quiet lately so this is a good opportunity to dustoff the old HT and join us. Our Tuesday night net is at 7:00P.M., on 147.18 (tone 162.2) and on 440.00 (tone 100). Evenif you don’t have a lot to say, you can check in and out. At leastthat way we know you are alive and well. Being well enoughto key the mike anyway. We all hope to hear you on the net nextweek.

Well, that is all I have for now. Be well and keep on hamming.

Don’t look now, but we are over half way through the hottesttime of the year, and most Tucson public schools are open forthe fall semester. Planning is already underway for El Tour deTucson — that confluence of serious bicycle riding and hamradio.

It is also the time of year for the Old Pueblo Radio Club toresume its monthly meetings at 1915 hrs MST on Wednesday,9 September 2015 in the Mason Room of Tucson MedicalCenter, and on the second Wednesday of each monththereafter until May 2016.

Hanging out on the HF bands.

HF is still alive and well. If you haven't spent some time onthe shortwave ham bands you may be missing out on somegood hamming. I tend toward the DX but there are a lot offriendly nets on 40 and 20 meters that will welcome yourparticipation. You can do a Google search for specific timesand frequencies. I will try and include some specifics in nextmonth's column.

It is fascinating to me to watch these bands change as the dayprogresses. Just to give you an example, you can sometimesget great propagation on 20 meters to Europe early in the day.Just to make things interesting I am also having successworking a station in the South Pacific in the early morning -DU2US. Just to make things more interesting, one eveningaround 9 pm I worked stations in Russia and Eastern Europeand 15 minutes later a station on the South Cook Islands in themiddle of the Pacific.

So there are surprises to be found and fun to be had huntingaround the HF bands.

One aid you might want to use is a web site atwww.dxwatch.com. There you will see posts from around theworld in real time. If you use it, construct a filter that has the"DE" stations to be from the US and you will get a pretty goodpicture of what is happening on the various bands. I often useit to capture stations I would not have otherwise spotted just bytuning around.

    Have fun.Richard W7MDQ

ssb & cwDetails concerning these contests and more can be found at the

WA7BNM web site: http://www.hornucopia.com/contestcal/contestcal.html. When you go to the web site, left click on the “+”sign in the left margin to see more information.

If you looked at these contests, you may have noticed that theimplied goal is to achieve a high score and the score is usuallycomputed by multiplying the QSO total value by a total multipliervalue. The value assigned to each QSO is usually 1, but may vary –sometimes 2, as in the ARRL contests for cw QSO’s vs 1 for ssbQSO’s, or a higher number for the higher frequency band QSO’s inthe ARRL VHF Contest. The multipliers may be assigned for newsections or countries or call letter prefixes (in the CQ WW WPXContest). And the multipliers may be applied for each band or for thewhole contest. For instance, if you operate in the ARRL January VHFContest and make 10 contacts (QSO’s where you exchange call lettersand grid square numbers for each) all on 2 meters FM in 5 grid squaresyour total score would be 50.

Remember you can always casually participate in these contests- most any contest - spent a few minutes or a few hours to becomefamiliar with the events. Actually only a minority (typically 10% to25%) of the operators are really serious contestants and most will behappy to take a few moments to help out newbies – we all have beennewbies.

    Good contesting to all,John, N9NA
