Please be sure to read through the safety notes in the Appendix to these operating instruc-tions. If you ever dispose of the model, it is important to pass on these safety notes and the complete building instructions to the new owner.

Introduction The ELEKTRO JUNIOR PLUS S is an elegant electric-powered model aircraft which offers particularly docile flying characteristics combined with an outstanding perfor-mance in the air. The model is very highly pre-fabricated. Nevertheless, the pro-cedures described below must be completed with the greatest possible care, other-wise we cannot guarantee that the aeroplane will fly well and safely. The model’s all-up weight must not exceed 1000 g.

Essential tools and adhesives (not included) Balsa knife Order No. 980 Cyano-acrylate (“cyano”) Order No. 5821 Cyano activator Order No. 953.150 UHU thread-lock fluid Order No. 952 You will also need the following items: cross-point screwdriver, 11 mm A/F ring-spanner, flat-nose pliers, 1.5 / 2 mm A/F allen keys, abrasive paper, adhesive tape, paper towel, protective gloves, protective goggles.

Building instructions Please start by reading right through these building instructions, so that you gain an overall understanding of how the model goes together. Lay out the components required for each stage of construction, together with the appropriate tools and ad-hesives. When working on the model always keep the bench surface clean and smooth, or cover it with a sheet of soft foam; this avoids damage to the model’s sur-faces. Unless stated otherwise, use cyano-acrylate glue (“cyano”) and activator for all joints on this model. The best method is to apply adhesive to one side of the joint, and spray activator on the mating surface. Please take particular care to avoid ad-hesive getting on your hands or the surface of the model: wipe off excess glue im-mediately using kitchen paper (paper towel). Caution: cyano-acrylate adhesives must not be allow ed to come into contact with any part of your body, and especially not your eyes. For this reason we

recommend that you wear protective goggles when bui lding the model. Store all glues well out of the reach of children. For sa fety reasons you should use the adhesive stated above exclusively. Take the tim e to read through the operating instructions for the BRUSHLESS CONTROL 35 speed controller which are supplied separately with the HPD 3515-110 0 motor set. The CAM FOLDING PROP folding propeller

The CAM FOLDING PROP is assembled from parts (5) to (13).

The folding propeller is assembled as shown in the illustrations above. Caution: the two countersunk screws (9) which retain the propell er blades must be secured with a drop of thread-lock fluid. Allow the fluid t o cure for 24 hours. Do not fit the propeller itself to the motor shaft until the fuselage has been completed; the retaining nut (11) should be tightened firmly using an 11 mm A/F ring-spanner. The fuselage and fin

Glue the motor mount (2) in the fuselage, after checking that it is an accurate fit. Wipe off any excess glue immediately using a piece of paper towel. Glue the CFRP tube (14) in the appropriate channel in the right-hand fuselage shell (18). Open up the cooling air intake using a balsa knife.

Set the servos to neutral (centre) using a servo tester, and fit the output arms on the output shafts; they should be at right-angles to the case sides. The picture shows the rudder servo as an example.

Install the rudder servo together with a 650 mm extension lead, and secure it with a little glue. Caution: do not use thin cyano for this, as it coul d penetrate the case and jam the moving parts. Check the servo before an d after installation. Repeatedly flex the rudder (attached to the fuselage shell (18)) to and fro to free up the hinge. The same procedure is used to free up the elevator and aileron hinges.

Shorten the output arm for the elevator servo and connect the pushrod (16) to the inner hole in the lever, as shown in the picture. Connect the servo to a 650 mm ex-tension lead, and secure it with a little glue, as described earlier. Note: if you prefer to use servos other than those specified, please ensure that they are metal-geared types.

Allow the two servo extension leads to project at the nose by about 80 mm, as shown in the illustration above. The two prepared fuselage shells (18 and 19) can now be glued together. Caution: since the gluing surfaces are large, it is important to carry out a “dry run” first to check the fit. Take care not to allow glue onto the rudder hinge, as this would cause it to become stiff. Your workplace must be well ventilated for this procedure; otherwise work in the open air. Ensure that no glue gets into or onto the servos. Any glue which is squeezed out of the joint lines should be wiped off immediately using paper towel.

Glue the plastic screw insert (20) in the top of the fin, taking care to produce a strong joint: fit the screw (21) in the insert, apply glue to the sides of the insert, and push it into place, then remove the screw (21) and apply more glue to the top of the insert joint, as shown in the photo above. Spray with activator, and check that the joint is strong enough by fitting the tailplane retaining screw (21) and carrying out a pull-test.

Connect the rudder pushrod (15) to the outer hole in the servo output arm and the rudder horn (17), then glue the horn in the slot in the rudder.

The tailplane

Glue the spreader plate (22) to the tailplane, and the elevator horn (17) in the slot in the elevator. The HPD 3515-1100 motor set

Screw the motor installation aid (4) into the HPD motor to a depth of no more than 3 mm (see picture), then place the motor in the fuselage and pull it forward. Secure the motor with the retaining screws (3), then remove part (4). Tighten the screws well.

The illustration shows the correct position of the BRUSHLESS CONTROL 35 speed controller (included in the HPD 3515-1100 motor set). Lay the motor power wires neatly side by side, press them against the left-hand fuselage side (19) and tack them in place with a little cyano, to eliminate any possibility of the wires making physical contact with the motor case. Caution: the first motor run must be carried out before the propeller is fitted to the motor. Once you are confident that all is well, dis-connect the push-button from the speed controller. Tighten the retaining nut of the folding propeller using an 11 mm A/F spanner. Caution: observe the safety notes in-cluded in the Appendix to these building instructions. The canopy

First roughen the lugs of the retaining magnet (25) and the support plate (26) using abrasive paper. Press the magnet (25) into the fuselage to the point where its top face is virtually flush with the fuselage, then apply a drop of cyano to fix it in place. Bend the lugs of the support plate (26) outwards to follow the curvature of the canopy. Sand the inside of the canopy (24) at the joint position. Apply adhesive tape over the magnet (25) on the fuselage, then place the support plate (26) on it. Apply cyano to the joint surface of the canopy, and spray activator on the support plate. Invert the fuselage, then place the canopy in the recess and press it into position. Allow the glue to set hard, then remove the canopy and apply more glue to the joint between the support plate (26) and the canopy. Remove the tape from the fuselage.

The wing The wing is designed to be left in two panels, so do not glue the wing joiner (29) in place; it is designed simply to be a push-fit in the finished wing panels, so that it can be withdrawn for transport. Repeatedly flex the ailerons to and fro to free up the hinge line. The manufacturing process necessarily produces a rough edge to the wing, but this has no adverse effect on the model’s flying qualities. However, it can be removed if you wish to improve the aeroplane’s appearance with careful use of a sharp modelling knife. However, do not be tempted to sand the wing surface or any other of the SOLIDPOR® components.

Page 8: 4565 ELEKTRO JUNIOR PLUS S en - Graupner · The ELEKTRO JUNIOR PLUS S is an elegant electric-powered model aircraft which ... mance in the air. The model is very highly pre-fabricated

Set the aileron servos to centre, fit the output arms on them, then glue the servos in the recesses in the wing. Connect the pushrods (32) to the outer holes of the servo output arms, and the inner holes of the aileron horns. Glue the aileron horns (17) in their slot. Set the aileron travels to 25 mm up and 12 mm down. Both ailerons should deflect up by 35 mm to act as airbrakes, measured at the trailing edge of the ailerons.

Deploy the servo extension leads in a straight line in each wing, and glue them in place, followed by the joiner supports (31) and (28). Caution: apply adequate ad-hesive in the channel in the wing, but not in the recess for the joiner. Spray activator on the spar support before pressing it into place. These joints are subject to severe loads in flight. Caution: do not insert the wing joiner (29) until you are certain that the adhesive is 100% cured. For safety’s sake spray activator inside the joiner opening.

The picture above shows the correct deployment of the servo extension leads; this completes work on the wing. Installing the wing

The wings are assembled and fitted as shown in the illustration: first connect the 100 mm servo extension leads, then fit the wing panels together, at the same time care-fully drawing the extension leads forward towards the receiver. Installing the HoTT receiver and the LiPo battery First connect the servo leads to the receiver; we recommend the following sequence: socket 2: left aileron servo; socket 3: elevator servo; socket 4: rudder servo; socket 5: right aileron servo; socket 6: speed controller. The 100 mm servo extension leads are connected to receiver sockets 2 and 5 while the wing is assembled and fitted. Now check all the working systems from the radio control system transmitter.

The photo above shows the HoTT receiver connected to the other components, and the completed G3.5 connection between speed controller and LiPo battery. Please bear in mind that the motor may burst into life when the G3.5 plugs and sockets are connected, so keep well clear of the propeller. Always carry out test-runs in the open air. Pierce a hole in the fuselage as shown in the picture, and route the receiver aerial through it to the outside. Decals It is not necessary to paint the model’s SOLIDPOR® components. If you wish to give the aircraft a coloured finish, we recommend the use of GRAUPNER LEXACOLOR spray paints, Order No. 945... Do not rub down the surfaces prior to painting, as this would damage the closed surface, causing the SOLIDPOR® parts to lose their strength. Instead wipe them with cellulose thinners, Order No. 1409, and a piece of absorbent paper towel. Do not paint the canopy (24), as this could cause it to distort. The model is completed by cutting out and applying the decals from the decal sheet (33) in the arrangement shown in the kit box illustration.

Balancing Assemble the model completely, ready to fly, with the folding propeller installed. The Centre of Gravity range is 60 to 70 mm aft of the wing root leading edge; this can be achieved by adjusting the position of the LiPo flight battery. Support the model at the stated CG position with two fingers under the wing roots, and allow it to hang freely: the fuselage will hang level when balanced correctly.

Flying Wait for a day with little or no breeze for the initial test-flight. The ideal flying site is a grassy field with a gentle slope facing into wind. Check that the control surfaces are exactly at centre before flying. Switch the motor on and give the aeroplane a hand-l aunch exactly into any breeze; trotting forward for a few steps gains the necessary momentum. Initially use the ailerons and elevator very gently just to correct any deviations from a straight flight path. Fine-tuning can be carried out by adjusting the trim sliders or buttons situated below and adjacent to the transmitter sticks. If the model is balanced at the forward end of the stated CG range, you will need t o set about 1 mm of up-trim. Always land the model directly into wind, with the motor switched off. You can ef-fectively shorten the model’s landing approach by deploying the airbrake function (both ailerons deflected up). Just before touch-down, apply slight up-elevator to flare out and slow the machine down further. Always land directly into wind. All of us at GRAUPNER Modellbau wish you many fine flights with your new

Environmental protection notes The presence of this symbol on a product, in the user instructions or the packaging, means that you must not dispose of that item, or the electronic components contained within it, in the ordinary domestic waste when the product comes to the end of its useful life. The correct method of disposal is to take it to your local collection point for recycling electrical and electronic equipment.

Individual markings indicate which materials can be recycled and re-used. You can make an important contribution to the protection of our shared environment by re-using the product, recycling the basic materials or re-processing redundant equipment in other ways. Dry cells and rechargeable batteries must be removed from the device and taken separately to a suitable battery disposal centre. If you don’t know the location of your nearest disposal centre, please enquire at your local council office. Safety Notes Before you fly the model for the first time it is essential (and a legal requirement) to take out an insurance policy designed to cover modelling risks. Be sure to read right through the instructions covering assembly and ope ration of your model before you attempt to operate it for the first time. You alone ar e responsible for the safe operation of your radio-controlled model aeroplane. Young people should only be permitted to build and fly this model under the instruction and supervision of an adult who is aware of the hazards involved in flying an RC model aircraft. In legal terms our models are classed as aircraft, and as such are subject to statutory regulations and restrictions which must be observed. Our brochure “Model lflugrecht, Paragrafen und mehr” (Model Aviation Law, Legal Requirements and m ore) is available under Order No. 8034.02, and contains a summary of all these rules; your local model shop should have a copy which you can read. There are also Post Office regul ations concerning your radio control system, and these must always be observed. Refer to your RC system instructions for more details. It is important to use only those parts included in the kit, together with other genuine Graupner accessories and replacement parts as recommended expressly by us. Even if you change a single component, you can no longer be sure that the whole system w ill work reliably, and such changes also invalidate your guarantee. Avoid short circuits and reverse polarity at all times. The high energy density of LiPo batteries involves a permanent risk of fire and even explosion. A radio-controlled model aircraft can only work properly and fulfi l your expectations if it is built very carefully, and in accordance with the building instructions. If you wish to avoid injuring people and damaging property, it is essential to be cautious and pai nstaking at all stages of building and operating your model. Nobody would climb into a full-size sai lplane and try to fly it without first completing a course of training. Model flying i s just such a skill, and has to be learned in exactly the same way. However, as manufacturers we have no means of influencing the w ay you build and operate your RC model aircraft, and for this reason we can do no more tha n point out the hazards expressly. We accept no further liability. If you need help, please enlist the aid of an experienced modell er, join a model club or enrol at a model flying training school. Model shops and the specialist model press are also good sources of information. The best course is always to join a club and fly at the approved model flying site.

Adhesives contain solvents which may be hazardous to health under cert ain circumstances. Always read and observe the notes and warnings supplied by the manufact urer of these materials. The operator of the model must be in full possession of his or her bodily and mental faculties. As with car driving, flying a model aircraft under the influence of alcohol or drugs is highly dangerous and not permissible under any circumstances. Make sure that all passers-by and onlookers are aware of the hazards involved in the operation of your model. Remind spectators to keep a safe distance from the model. Always maintain a safe distance between your model and other pe ople or objects. Never fly low over people or directly towards them. Radio-controlled models should only be flown in “normal” weather con ditions, i.e. a temperature range of -5° to +35°C. More extreme temperatures can lead to changes in battery capacity, material characteristics, the strength of glued joi nts and other unwanted effects. All model flyers should behave in a way which minimises the dang er to people and property. Never act in any manner which will disturb other pilots, or hav e an adverse effect on safe, orderly flying at the site. Don’t operate your model in the vicinity of overhead power cables , industrial sites, residential areas, public roads, school playgrounds, public parks or sports fields e tc. Pre-flight checks Check that the radio control system works correctly and at f ull range before every flight: switch on the transmitter and the receiving system, fit the transmi tter aerial and extend it to its full length; walk away from the model, and check that all the contr ol surfaces work smoothly and immediately at an appropriate distance; check also that they deflect in the correct “sense” in relation to the stick movements. Repeat the check with the motor running, while a friend holds the model securely for you. If you are a relative beginner to this type of model flying, we r ecommend that you enlist an experienced model pilot to help you check and test-fly the model. Don’t ignore our warnings They refer to hazardous materials and proce sses which, if ignored, can result in fatal injury or serious damage to property. Propellers powered by a motor constitute a permanent hazard a nd represent a real risk of injury. Don’t touch them with any part of your body. For example, a propeller spinning at high speed can easily cut your finger badly. Keep well clear of the rotational plane of the propeller. You never know when some part may come loose and fly off at high speed, hitting you or anybody else in the vicinity. In unfavourable circumstances this could result in serious injury. Ensure that the revolving propeller never comes into contact with any object. Make sure that it is impossible for any object to stall or bl ock the propeller. Every time you intend to operate your model, check carefully that it and everything attached to it (e.g. propeller, RC components etc.) is in good condition and undamage d. If you find a fault, do not fly the model until you have corrected it. Satisfy yourself that your frequency is unoccupied before you swit ch on. Radio interference caused by unknown sources can occur at any time without warning. If this should happen, your model will be uncontrollable and completely unpredictable. Nev er leave your radio control system unguarded, as other people might pick it up and try to use it. Do not switch the electric motor on unless you have checked that t here is nothing in the rotational plane of the propeller. Never attempt to stop the pr opeller when it is spinning. Electric motors with propellers fitted must only be run when fi rmly mounted.

If you are to fly your model safely and avoid problems, it is e ssential that you are aware of its position and attitude throughout each flight - so don’t let it fly t oo far away. If you detect a control problem or interference during a flight, immediately land the model to prevent a potential accident. Model aeroplanes must always give way to f ull-size aircraft. Take-off and landing strips should be kept free of people and other obstacles. Your RC system can only work reliably if the batteries are kept fully charged. Never use hot, faulty or damaged batteries. It is important to observe the instructions supplied by the battery manufacturer. Before every flight ensure that all functions are working correc tly, and carry out a range check. Always ensure that the throttle stick (or other throttle cont rol) is at the motor OFF position before switching the transmitter on. To avoid the electric motor bursting into life unexpectedly, always switch the transmitter on first, followed by the r eceiving system. When switching off, reverse the order: receiving system first, then the transmit ter. Check that the control surfaces work in the correct “sense”, i.e. that they deflect in the direction which corresponds to the movement of the stick. After each session remove all the batteries from the model and store them in a discharged state at a temperature of about +5° to +25°C. They must be k ept out of the reach of children. Please don’t misunderstand the purpose of these notes. We only want to make you aware of the many dangers and hazards which can arise if you lack knowl edge and experience, or work carelessly or irresponsibly. Provided that you take reasonabl e care, model flying is a highly creative, instructive, enjoyable and relaxing pastime.
