The design of the transit hub began with the diagramming the kinetic motion found on the site of transit hub in Santa Monica, California. The diagram was then used to create a gestural model to create a vocabu-lary to generate the form of the transit center from. The architecture of the transit center responds to kinetic movement of nearby highway one. The field has more motion elements, while the architecture is pushed to the edge of the site in response to the highway. The architecture is folded and smashed as if the wave collided with the transit hub . The architecture is constructed as if a wave ripped the skin off the site and created a new skin on the site.

The neurobiological research center design began first by creating a series of bass-wood splines that responded to the idea of a biological sewage filter. These basswood splines was then digitized into a digital file via the use of a 3d digitizer. These digital splines were then transformed into a surface via the heightfield command in Rhino. This height-field surface was then machined in a MDF surface using a CNC router. The surface was then implemented into a brownfield site on the Willamette river in Portland, Oregon. The research center was designed with the symbolic relationship between the public and lab spaces in mind. Both functions of the building are dependent of one another. The architecture highlights this relationship be creating a skin system where two sepa-rate skin interconnect with one another, and also is interdependent structurally. This ar-chitecture creates a visual relationship be-tween the two elements of the program 2_

The retreat center began with the idea of retreat. Often retreat is thought of as a process of clearing one’s mind. Due to the building’s location on a college campus the design seeks to focus the mediation of the individual in the archi-tecture via the structural opposition of the architecture. The two buildings in the design are supported via two dif-ferent structural systems. The main retreat spaces are constructed from cast in place concrete while the smaller meeting space is supported via trusses in tension which hold the building up via cables which are buttressed by the concrete building. The relationship of these two opposing types of systems can be used as an idea for focusing meditation. The open curtain walls al-low the occupants to also use the nat-ural environmental oasis in the middle of a busy college campus as another tool for students to focus their minds in meditation.

The diaploid was a designed based on a Grasshopper definition written by Andrew Kudless of Matsys Design. As part of my work with Matsys I was asked to assist in the Fabrication of the lamp as well as the production of the a series of drawings which described the pro-cesses which generated the lamp itself. Using grasshopper to generate a series of circles which creates a set of curves used to produce the geometry of the lamp. The diagrams illustrate how a simple set of parameters can generate a large variety of lamp designs allowing each client to have a design which is unique but related to the overall series. The parametric geometry is then used to create a skin made of faceted tiles which diffuses the light generated from the bulb.
