Durango–based filmmaker Sean Owen won Best Native American Documentary at the
Santa Fe Film Festival with his film Tribal Radio! The film was also nominated for Best Short Film and
Best Short Film Director at Idyllwild International Film Festival.
ICL will host Mr. Owen and screen his 27 minute film about KSUT-FM, based in Ignacio, which was
one of the first tribal radio stations in the U.S. The film tells the story of the Southern Ute Indian staff
members who established it in 1976 and how it grew into a prominent regional station.
Accomplished author, performer, theatre director and
educator Angel Vigil is coming to ICL! He is the author
of six award-winning books on Hispanic
Western arts & culture.
His show Cuentos de Aztlan, Stories from the
Homeland is an engaging and illuminating journey
into the Latino soul as expressed in traditional and
modern stories. Including everything from morality
tales to animal fables, from chistes — short comic tales
guaranteed to amuse, to amazing tales of wonder,
there is something for everyone!
The Ignacio Community Library is proud to announce the
re-launch of the “Voices of Ignacio” website!
Voices of Ignacio is a history project launched in 2015
with the mission of collecting interviews of local
townspeople as well as written stories, photos, and
artwork that pertain to Ignacio history.
Featured along the walls of the library this month will be
posters representing previous interviewees— please
stop in and look at them all month long!
The new Voices of Ignacio website can be found at:
voicesofignacio.cvlcollections.org, or on our library’s main
website under the Resources tab on the History of Ignacio.
If you go to our website; ignaciolibrary.org
and hit the research tab, you will find many
databases. This month we’re highlighting
NoveList K-8. It is a trusted source of read-alike
recommendations specifically for younger
readers. It helps kids find books that are just
right for their reading level and interests.
Parents, teachers, and librarians can also
find tools to teach with books and
engage young readers.
School is back and your library has many ways
to help during the year! One way can be
found under the research databases tab
on our website, it’s called Primary Search. It
gives you access to articles and information
from popular elementary school magazines,
encyclopedias, and dictionaries. Give it a look
to better help your child this year!
Often people post Word documents,
spreadsheets, slides, and PDFs on the
internet. Perhaps you are looking for files on
‘fall recipes’ but you are only interested in
PDF’s. Modify your search to look like this:
“fall recipes”filetype:pdf By doing this
Google will only search for files with the term
‘fall recipes’ that are PDF’s.
Starting Mon, Sept. 16, 5:30 p.m. The Book Sisters!
An evening for women to let their hair down,
make new friends and enjoy discovering a new
book. This month’s featured book is First Frost
written by Sarah Ellen Addison.
Dinner will be provided.
“Banned Books Week is September
22 –28. It was launched in 1982 in
response to a sudden surge in the
number of challenges to books in
schools, bookstores and libraries. It
highlights the value of free and open
access to information. Banned Books
Week brings together the entire book
community — librarians, booksellers,
publishers, journalists, teachers, and
readers of all types — in shared
support of the freedom to seek and to
express ideas, even those some
consider unorthodox or unpopular.”
They brought home 13 awards from the National Native
Media Awards competition in July, including a 1st place for
General Excellence and a 1st place for
Best Digital Publication. The competition is between peer
newspapers in Indian country throughout the nation as
recognized by the Native American Journalists
Association. The Drum’s editor Jeremy Wade Shockley
received 4 awards in photography, Photographer/Reporter
McKayla Lee took 3 awards, and Trennie Collins landed 3
awards for photography. ICL applauds our
associates at the Drum!
Six cities/public libraries have joined forces to launch an annual regional reading
program called “Four Corners/One Book” with the goals of promoting literacy,
encouraging dialogue, and building community through the shared experience of
story. Located in the American Southwest, the cities of Cortez, Dolores, Ignacio,
Mancos, and Montrose (Colorado) as well as Moab (Utah) have selected Church of
the Graveyard Saints by C. Joseph Greaves as the program’s inaugural title. Set in
the Four Corners, the book tells the story of a young woman’s return to her
hometown only to discover that the oil and gas boom promising prosperity to the
larger community is threatening her family’s ranching heritage.
ICL is offering a multi-event program to patrons who are interested in learning more about
the public lands and national forests mentioned in the novel.
Monday, September 23rd the first twelve people to sign up for the One Book/Four Corners - Ignacio Library
series will receive a free copy of Church of the Graveyard Saints.
Thursday, October 17th at 6 pm the ICL will host Dr. Andrew Gulliford from Ft. Lewis College who will be
giving a talk on President Theodore Roosevelt and his connections with Southwest Colorado - including
Roosevelt’s designation and creation of the San Juan National Forest.
Thursday, November 14th at 5:30 pm the ICL will host the San Juan String Band, a lively group from the San
Juan National Forest Service whose members have combined their passion for the environment with their
love of music, to provide conservation education and environmental awareness messages for the public.
Saturday, December 7th at 10 am the novel’s author, C. Joseph Greaves, will be visiting the ICL to discuss
his novel with program participants—as well as sign books for those in attendance!
Please sign up for the One Book/Four Corners program at the ICL on or after Monday, September 23 by
contacting the library by phone or visiting the service desk in order to receive a free book!
The ICL is now offering educational
support for anyone 16 years of age
or older; including test-taking skills
for exams such as the SAT, ACT,
ASVAB, and the GED. Please
contact Andrew Hutchinson at
970-563-9287, or by email:
with any questions or comments
you may have, or to set up an
appointment to get started!
Again this October—November is,
Family Literacy Night! Adults will learn and
practice ways to increase reading in the
home. Kids will get storytime, crafts and
games led by library staff.
The library has some recommendations for books
your students should read this school year
from beginner to advanced!
Just in time for Halloween on Sunday, October 27th at 2 pm is the ICL’s 5th annual
Mystery Dinner! Participants gather clues provided throughout the plot and use them to
deduce the identity and motive of the murderer. This year the theme is
Murder in the Florida Keys. Guests will be on teams to work together to solve the crime.
The suspects will be visiting with them, giving small clues and answering questions.
We are looking for ten people to play suspects for the mystery dinner. If you have an interest
in taking on a part as a suspect please contact Andrew Hutchinson at the library or stop by
the service desk. You will be given a description and brief history of your suspect’s part,
and we will meet several times to go over the script and get to know the other people
participating with in this fun event. We hope you consider playing a part!
