Middle Passage Monument

How would you memorialize the Middle Passage?

The Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery features an exquisite black granite sculpture commemorating those killed during the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement.

STEP ONE:

• Examine the “Middle Passage” of slaves from the differing viewpoints found in the included primary sources. Answer the questions included at the end of each source.

STEP TWO:• Imagine that you have been commissioned by the

government to create a memorial for the Middle Passage. Design and draw a monument that would be appropriate for remembering the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Should be neat and in color.

STEP THREE:• Then write a one-page inscription that would be

included on a plaque. Use complete sentences. It should include information taken from at least two (2) of the primary sources provided.
