MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF FILM AND TELEVISION
Welcome from the Head of Film and Television
Welcome to the VCA Film and Television’s 47th season of graduate film screenings. We are 49 years old this year, and just shy of the big 50! We are planning a party of course, so keep your eyes peeled during 2016 for updates.
Starting out in 1966, offering Australia’s first dedicated film production course, we have a great deal to be proud of with alumni scattered across the globe bringing their unique and special artistry to storytelling on screens large and small.
In the meantime, 2015 has been a very significant year for VCA Film and Television, with our first crop of undergraduate animators and undergraduate screenwriters graduating this year. We now have a full-time cohort of around 225 directing, producing or screenwriting students. We also deliver subjects in filmmaking to around 550 undergraduate students from other degrees in the University, and a further 120 students enrolled in our non-award and short courses this year.
So, it would be correct to say that we have been through a period of significant growth over the last 50 years, and with the proliferation of screen-based platforms over that time, and the growing interest in developing expertise in moving image storytelling, it is no surprise that our ambition and our achievements have expanded.
We also continue to offer our students international experiences. Earlier this year, Luke Devenish, one of our fabulous Screenwriting lecturers, accompanied a group of eight BFA Screenwriting students to the famous Whistling Woods International Film School, located deep inside the Mumbai Bollywood studios. They went to study the fundamentals of the Natya Shastra and its eight rasas (emotions), comparable to the western tradition of Aristotle’s Poetics, and prevalent throughout Indian storytelling. And while the group was certainly rewarded with the all-singing, all-dancing spectaculars they hoped for in Bollywood, they returned with a profound appreciation for Indian Cinema and an understanding of that extraordinary storytelling tradition that is millennia old.
This 2015 season of graduate films gives us, once again, the chance to experience the result of imagination + enterprise + encouragement + collegiality + determination from our extraordinary students with their prodigious creativity. I guarantee messages of hope, reflection, hilarity and high drama.
I hope you enjoy the season, and I wish all the best success for our graduates.

VCA FILM AND TELEVISION 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Film and Television at the Victorian College of the Arts is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016!
Film and Television was established at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1992 following the move of the original Swinburne School of Film and Television (est. 1966)
to the College. 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of Australia’s oldest continuing film school and we want everyone to help us celebrate!
Next year we’ll be holding a series of events and screenings to celebrate the contribution our alumni have made to the Australian and international film industries.
Our alumni have screened their films and won prizes at every prestigious film event imaginable. From the Oscars to Cannes, from the ABC to the BBC, we have been there.
Former students work in every corner of the film and television industries, keeping the wheels turning by providing the creative and technical know-how to produce a huge
number of the programs loved by Australian and international audiences.
2016 also marks the launch of our new Digital Online Archive, which will make 50 of our alumni’s original student films available to everyone online for the first time. We’ve selected films that showcase the depth and breadth of Australian filmmaking, and that
highlight Melbourne’s special place in the Australian film industry.
