Alderman’s Corner As we wake up this morning, we are all dis- turbed by the chaos and vi- olence that occurred in our city this past weekend. First, thank you to our CPD, CFD, OEMC, and all City employees. We also want to thank the State Police and all other agencies for their work. What was a peaceful demonstration with citizens expressing their outrage over the death of George Floyd, was hijacked by criminals. When we as a nation should be coming together, to work together, to prevent incidents like the murder of Mr. Floyd, those efforts get lost when vandals and criminals use the 1st Amendment right, to protest a wrong for their own personal criminal acts. We cannot allow these outside antagonists and criminals to disparage George Floyd’s memory. CPD and the lawful protesters should stand together to oppose those that are trying to destroy our City. The Mayor’s Curfew Order remains in effect again tonight (9:00 pm to 6:00 am). Furthermore, the Central Business District (Roosevelt Road on the South; Division Street on the North; Dan Ryan/Kennedy Expressway on the West; and Lakeshore Drive on the East) will be closed. Only those that live or work within those boundaries will be allowed access. Anyone else who is stopped by the CPD, within those Central Business District, will be arrested. We strongly encourage everyone to stay home, staying in our neighborhoods. We must not forget we have a Stay At Home Order in effect, and should be limiting our social interaction. As always, we encourage you to be nosy neigh- bors and report any suspicious activity. Now more than ever, we ask that you keep an eye out for your neighbors. We continue to have the brave women and men of the 1st, 9th and 12th Districts protecting our com- munities. When you see them, please give a wave and let them know how much we appreciate them. If you need any City services or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Ward Office via email, [email protected] or calling us at 773-254- 6677. We will get through these challenging times to- gether! -Alderman Patrick D. Thompson First Trinity Updates On February 2, 2020, a decorative stone fell from the bell tower of the sanc- tuary of First Lutheran Church of the Trinity. To God be the glory, no one was injured, and the stone did not impact the overall structure of the building. Pre- cautions such as scaffolding were put in place immediately and since then the sanctuary property team and the church council have been diligently working on a plan to move forward. We would like to assure the community that our buildings are not being torn down. There are no plans to tear down the church which has become a neigh- borhood staple. Nor has the church been abandoned. As we continue to work toward a solution today, a reflection on the rich history of our congregation gives us hope that change propels us forward. The congregation at First Lutheran Church of the Trinity is more than 150 years old - one of the oldest Christian Churches in Bridgeport. First Trinity remains committed to our community. We continue to worship online on Sunday mornings via Facebook at www.facebook.com/1sttrichi Although God’s Closet clothing pantry is temporarily closed and not accept- ing clothing donations, generous donors and volunteers continue to make and distribute meals “to go” on Tuesdays from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and on Fridays from 10:00am to 12:00pm. First Trinity is running a perpetual Food Drive col- lecting non-perishable and canned foods. Food will be distributed to families in need for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. We invite the community to donate food and volunteer their time by contacting us at welcome@firsttrin- itychicago.com As we strive to stay present and serve the community through this uncertain and difficult time, we are not immune to negativity and hate. Recently two of the community center windows were broken in an apparent act of vandalism. Please pray for the individuals responsible, that they may find peace, hope and love in God. Please consider making a monetary donation to help with the cost of the repairs to the windows and general maintenance needed for the sanctuary and the community center. Click on the green “Donate” button found on our web page: www.firsttrinitychicago.com And while the path in the wilderness is often confusing, First Trinity is a community that is alive and working to meet the needs of our siblings in Bridge- port. We have faith that God leads us forward to new growth. Peace be upon you, Rev. Nicolette M. Peñaranda, Will Tanzman, Church Council President. Exalting God in the Cave Is it Possible to Sing in the Midst of Hardship? On Sunday, May 24, Pastor Luke Dudenhofer of New Life Community Church in Bridgeport preached a sermon entitled “Exalting God in the Cave,” from the series, “Refined: Stronger Character, Deeper Hope.” The series ad- dresses the trials, hardships, grief, and pain that we all face in this life. It also highlights the obstacles faced by biblical figures and reveals how the trials we face can help us to grow with renewed strength, hope, and purpose. “Exalting God in the Cave” examines a specific trial faced by David, the young shepherd whom God had chosen to lead the Kingdom of Israel. David was to be the successor of King Saul, who had forfeited his legacy through dis- obedience and rebellion against God. Saul’s rebellion against God had not only stripped him of his royal lineage; it had also robbed him of his inner peace, leaving him, at times, in a state of torment. David would play music for Saul to ease his mind during these times of unrest. But as David became notable for bringing Israel to military victory against the Philistines, Saul became jealous. Overcome with jealousy and suspicion, Saul set out to kill David. David fled into the wilderness and hid in a cave. As Saul pursued, he eventually wandered into the same cave for a brief rest. Rather than taking the King’s life, David clipped a corner of his robe and waved it at him from a safe distance. It is at this time that David also composed Psalm 57, a song in which he not only cries out to God and begs for vindication and salvation, but he also praises God and trusts in Him, knowing that He is sovereign over his present situation. In Psalm 57, David begins: Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. (Psalms 57:1 NIV) Because David trusted in God’s promises, he knew that he would be protected from Saul’s attack and given the throne in God’s time. He did not plot against Saul, nor did he attempt to kill him, even when his own life was being threat- ened. Instead, David turned to God in his distress, found comfort in His prom- ises, and established a steadfast heart of worship. Like He had done for David, God gives us promises to hold on to in the midst of trials. When we trust in Him and confess our own wrongdoing, He promises to give us mercy, forgiveness, peace, and eternal life. He also promises to walk with us through trials and to allow these moments to strengthen us. And we know we can take hope in these promises because of what God has already done. By sending His son Jesus to bear the weight of our sins, God gives us the assurance that we can be forgiven. By raising Jesus from the dead, He gives us the assurance that he is sovereign over all things. Have you trusted in God and the sacrifice of Jesus to give you hope, peace, strength, and a reason to sing in the midst of trials? Our church family is here to encourage your faith, to help you know and trust Jesus Christ. We look forward to meeting you! Apply Online for $79 Million in Refunds and $44 Million in Missing Cook County Property Tax Exemptions Taxpayers seeking property tax refunds will have new tools on cookcountytreasurer.com, enabling them to file electronically instead of downloading a form and mailing it in, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said today. “Filing for refunds just became easier, and for good reason,” Pappas said. “Because of the pan- demic, the new normal may be that people can’t visit government offices to submit documents or get an- swers to questions about their tax bill in person, so we’ll let them ‘visit’ from home.” Pappas asked consulting firm Applications Soft- ware Technology LLC (AST) to integrate Salesforce customer relationship management (CRM) software with the website to streamline the process of apply- ing for refunds caused by overpayments and missing property tax exemptions. Taxpayers can now search for refunds by property address and select the appli- cation button to submit their claim. The system also allows taxpayers to submit sup- porting documentation, if necessary. Eliminating paper applications will shave one week off the time it takes the Office to issue refunds due to overpay- ments, reducing processing to three to five weeks, Pappas said. About 16,000 paper applications are mailed each year. Pappas also overhauled her CRM system, which the office developed in 2001, so that information about refund applications and other inquiries about property taxes is contained in a single database. “Our CRM system was ahead of its time then,” Pap- pas said. “Now we go to the next level of effi- ciency.” De La Salle High School Offering Online Summer Camps and Athletic Clinics Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Football, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Volleyball, Wrestling, Algebra Fundamentals, Creative Writing, Mind & Body Yoga, Online Model United Nations and Writing Current Event Comics are being offered. Red Cross: Urgent Need for Blood Donations as Hospital Demand Increases

The American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood donations to prevent another blood shortage as hospitals resume surgical procedures and patient treatments that were temporarily paused earlier this spring in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.   Healthy individuals who are feeling well are asked to make an appointment to donate in the weeks and months ahead by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.   In recent weeks, hospital demand for blood products has grown by 30% after sharply declining in early April amid this rapidly changing and complex public health crisis. At the same time, blood drives continue to be canceled as many businesses and community organizations remain closed. Donors are needed to make and keep scheduled appointments to help meet the current need.   All those who come to give through June 30th will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email.*   “Blood donors have played a vital role in the lives of patients who have needed lifesaving transfusions during this pandemic, and patients continue to depend on donors each and every day,” said Paul Sullivan, senior vice president, Red Cross Blood Services. “The Red Cross appreciates the support of those who rolled up a sleeve to give in recent months, but the need doesn’t stop. We need the public’s help to avoid another blood shortage this summer.”   It’s important to remember that red blood cells must be transfused within 42 days of donation and platelets within just five days. So, they must constantly be replenished. There is no known end date in this fight against coronavirus, and the Red Cross urgently needs the help of donors and blood drive hosts to ensure blood products are readily available for patients.   Blood drive safety precautions: Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control, and additional precautions – including temperature checks, social distancing and face coverings for donors and staff – have been implemented to ensure the health of all those in attendance. Parents, Do These Five Things Before Returning to Child Care

As stay-at-home orders are lifted, many working parents are returning to their jobs and many child care programs are reopening. Parents need to know how the COVID-19 crisis has impacted their child care programs. Here are five tips to help families with young children transition back to child care routines.

Five Things to Do Before Returning to Child Care   1. Pay your bill. Parents, you were probably asked to pay at least a portion of your fees while your child care program was closed. While it may seem unfair to pay for care while your child is home with you, charging fees to reserve a child’s space is standard practice for child care centers and it is essential for keeping programs running. The center’s expenses continue even when children are not present. Facility costs like mortgage or rent payments must still be met. Most importantly, staff must be paid. Retaining skilled and experienced teachers and caregivers is one of the biggest challenges in the field of early child

hood care and education. Paying your child care fees while your center is closed will help ensure that the staff will be there to welcome your child when they return.   2. Practice wearing masks at home. Child care centers are now adapting their health and safety practices to provide as much protection as possible against the spread of COVID-19. In most centers, the staff and parents will be required to wear masks, at least during drop off and pick up. In some centers, children over the age of two will also be required to wear masks. Seeing people in masks and wearing a mask may be difficult for many young children. You can help your child adjust to this new normal by practicing wearing masks at home.  Offer your child a simple explanation for why people wear masks. For example, “A mask is something people wear that covers their nose and mouth. Wearing a mask helps keep people from getting sick.” Children learn through play, so include masks in silly “peek-a-boo” games or in pretend play. Allow your child to pick out or decorate their own masks.   3. Prep extra supplies. Most child care centers will now have stricter rules for keeping children’s supplies clean. This means that parents can antici-pate the need to bring more items from home to the center each day, as well as the need to bring those items home and wash them more frequently. Check with your child care center to find out what new guidelines are in place, but keep in mind that you will likely need to prep individual meals and snacks, to provide more changes of clothing and extra dia-pers and wipes, and to more frequently swap out and wash blankets and nap items.   4. Thank your child care teachers and staff. Pro-fessionals working in early childhood care and edu-cation were already underpaid and overlooked before the COVID-19 pandemic. While some policy makers and leaders are now recognizing the impor-tance of child care services in rebuilding our econ-omy, your child’s teachers and caregivers have not received the recognition and appreciation they de-serve. Be sure to take a moment to tell them how much they mean to your family and thank them every day for their commitment to your child.   5. Contact your legislators. To ensure that quality care and education is available to all young children, make sure your legisla-tors are making child care a top priority. Ad-vocacy organizations like the National Associ-ation for the Education of Young Children and Zero to Three provide guidance for reaching out to legislators and speaking up about the importance of investing in child care and other early childhood services.
