4D LIFE USA TODAYWEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2016
PARK CITY, UTAH Most Sun-dance Film Festival attendeespacked down jackets and snowboots. Netflix and Amazon filledtheir bags with cash.
Both streaming platforms in-vaded the festival this year, oftenshoving traditional distributorsaside by driving up bidding warsfor films.
“There were no movies wewere outbid on,” says AmazonStudios head Roy Price, whobought the Kate Beckinsale-star-ring Jane Austen tale Love &Friendship ($2 million), RachelWeisz’s Complete Unknown ( justover $2 million), oddball comedyWiener-Dog (a seven-figure deal)and the documentary Author: TheJT LeRoy Story ($1 million).
Before the festival, Netflixwrote big checks for hot titlessuch as Ellen Page’s Tallulah ($5million for streaming rights) andPaul Rudd’s The Fundamentals ofCaring ($7 million). This week, italso purchased the documentaryAudrie & Daisy and the Iranianhorror film Under the Shadow.
Last year, Amazon attendedthe festival and went home withnothing. “We were just starting
then,” says Price, noting his man-date is the same: visionary films“that you’re going to remember, that are compelling.”
Wallet size matters, but so doesreturn on investment. Streamingsites don’t have to worry aboutbox oce bombs. “There’s a bigopportunity for streaming ser-vices like Netflix and Amazon tosnatch up buzzy movies that willnot do well theatrically but will
find a healthy audience at homestreaming,” says Fandango.commanaging editor Erik Davis.
They’re also keeping an eye onawards films. Amazon is bettingbig on Manchester By the Sea, atop pick for critics at the festival.Amazon prevailed in an all-nightfight for the Casey Aeck drama, paying $10 million with thepromise of a theatrical releaseand an awards season push.
“Streaming services want in onOscar nominations,” Davis says.
The tide turned when TheBirth of A Nation hit the market. The slavery drama from director/writer/star Nate Parker, whichwon the U.S. Grand Jury Prizeand the Audience Award, had dis-tributors scrambling to win thepotential Oscar candidate.
Netflix, which Deadline report-ed oered $20 million for thefilm, ultimately lost to Fox
Searchlight, the studio behindbest-picture nominee Brooklynand 12 Years a Slave, which tookhome best picture at the Oscarsin 2014. Searchlight secured Birthfor $17.5 million.
“It was about aligning with apartner that really shared thesame passion for getting thisthing seen by the masses on aglobal scale, and the connectionwe had personally,” Parker says.
But it probably didn’t help thatNetflix’s first major awards con-tender, Beasts of No Nation, wasshut out of this year’s Oscarnominations. The film streamedon Netflix and was simultaneous-ly released in just 31 theaters, pulling in only $91,000.
“Movies that have major Oscarpotential want to send a messagethey should be seen on as manyscreens as possible,” Davis says.
Netflix declined to comment.

USA TODAYWEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2016 LIFE 5D
LOS ANGELES Cheryl BooneIsaacs never mentioned the word“diversity” during her openingaddress Monday at the annualAcademy Awards NomineesLuncheon.
But the Academy of Motion Pic-ture Arts and Sciences presidentaddressed the #OscarsSoWhitecontroversy that has overshad-owed the 88th awards, even duringa celebratory luncheon.
“This year, we all know, there isan elephant in the room — I haveasked the elephant to leave,”Boone Isaacs told the room filledwith 150 Oscar nominees from 24categories. “Today is all about allof your incredible work.”
The awards luncheon has been
a Hollywood staple for 35 years, bringing the nominees togetherfor lunch, a class photo and in-structions before Oscar night(Feb. 28).
“This is a tradition about cam-araderie,” said Boone Isaacs, looking over an audience that included luminaries LeonardoDiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence,Sylvester Stallone, Mark Rualo,Eddie Redmayne, Steven Spiel-berg and George Miller.
This year’s awards show hasprovoked a firestorm of criticismsince January’s Oscar nomina-tions, which featured no actor ofcolor for the second year in a row.Director Spike Lee and WillSmith and Jada Pinkett Smith an-nounced they would not attendthe Oscar ceremony before theacademy announced changesaimed at doubling female and mi-
nority members by 2020. Backstage at the luncheon,
Creed supporting-actor nomineeStallone said he considered notattending the Oscars because his
African-American co-star Mi-chael B. Jordan and director RyanCoogler weren’t nominated.
But Stallone said Coogler toldhim to “go there and representthe film.” The industry will haveto change to allow dierent sto-ries to be told, the actor said.
“Certainly, there’s a universallaw of existence, you either adaptor cease to exist,” said Stallone. “Ido believe things will change —it’s a matter of time. Eventually, all talent will rise to the top. It’sjust a matter of getting a new wayof thinking.”
Rooney Mara, nominated forher performance in the lesbianlove story Carol, said the diversitydiscussion needs to represent allwalks of life. She pointed out thatthere could be an #OscarsSoStraight for the lack of diverse re-lationships depicted onscreen.
“These are all important con-versations for us to be having,”Mara said.
Show producers David Hill andReginald Hudlin unveiled theirplan to keep Oscar speeches to themandatory 45 seconds. A “thankyou” scroll at the bottom of thescreen will list people whom win-ners wish to acknowledge, allow-ing for more meaningful speeches. Those thanked in the scroll willhave “a permanent record of yourgratitude,” Hill added, and screengrabs can be “framed and kept inthe family forever.”
Hudlin promised an “exciting, entertaining and unpredictableshow,” helmed by “world-classhost” Chris Rock, who was not atthe luncheon.
Said Hudlin, “This show willhonor and celebrate your moviesand all of your achievements.”
