NUVINCI IN THE WILD by Rich Yu

If I were a bolder person, I would have departed for my bike ride from Chengdu to Tibet on a brakeless fixed gear. I was informed that though the elevation gains could be quite extreme on National Highway 318, which stretches from Shanghai to Lhasa, the roads were in excellent condition. After all, I had even heard stories of locals completing the trip on Chinese Fenghua hulks. Yet through some combi-nation of fear and better judgment, I hurriedly assembled two geared bikes from fixie frames for my girlfriend and I. Luckily, a friend was kind enough to sell me a coveted Nuvinchi hub far below the recommended $400USD price tag. It is worth noting that this friend was not selling stolen goods, and as far as I can tell, lives a civilized, law-abiding life. To clarify, this hub is an internal gear hub, which al-lows users to change gears using “gears” built into the hub. Our travel mate Karl Ke, was equally enthusiastic about his own Nuvinchi, so we packed our panniers quickly and set off.
