Dear Parents and Students,
In these uncertain times, I want you to know that I am thinking about all of you and the disruption this
school closure has had on your lives due to the coronavirus. I hope that you are staying safe and
healthy and that your spring break was relaxing. Please make sure to check your emails daily as well
as the Pinal County Schools Website (https://www.pinalk12.org/) for updated information on the
COVID-19 closure. I am here to let you know that at any time you have questions, concerns, or need
someone to talk to, you may contact me by email [email protected].
The assignments I will be sending to students can be completed electronically (using OneNote) or
paper based (picked up in the office). I understand that during this time it may be an unusual
experience, but I am certain that we can work together to help make things as normal as possible. I
have included a summary of assignments below to help make this transition as smooth as possible.
Reading/Writing:
- Holes Literature Study (See additional information)
- Reading Plus 4th - 6th: 1 Reading lesson, 2 Vocabulary lessons and 1 Visual Skills lesson per week.
Math
- 5th grade math review
- Think aloud math word problems (may be something for the household to participate in)
Science
- Earth and Space Science (Solar System)
Any additional assignments/ information will be communicated via email or REMIND to stay connected
during this time.
We, as a school, will do everything we can to continue to provide everything you need to so that we
may meet the needs of our students and the resources parents need for support along the way. Please
know that I am extremely grateful for each and every one of you and this extra work that has been
placed in your hands. I am here for anything you may need, and I believe together we will successfully
finish our 5th grade year and move onto 6th grade prepared.
Again, if at any time you have questions I am available via email at [email protected]. I will be
spending most of my time working from home and spending quality time with my wife, son and soon
to be baby. Yes, my wife and I are expecting another child and we couldn’t be happier! I am hopeful
that we can work though this together to finish off the year strong!
Sincerely,
Mr. Aguayo
Communication & Reminders:
Remind is a free text-messaging app that provides users with information more
quickly than the traditional paper handouts. Remind is an efficient and easy way
of communicating school events, programs and reminders to parents via text-
message directly to parents/ guardians. This website application also serves as a way for parents to
conveniently contact the teacher regarding
questions, clarification or additional information.

Holes Literature Study Hello Parents and families,
Our class will be reading the novel Holes by Louis Sachar
as a part of our literature study for the subjects of reading and
writing. I am very excited for this unit since it gives students the
opportunity to explore literature by reading lengthier stories
that assist with their comprehension, vocabulary and…..
(fingers crossed) enjoyment of reading! Please be advised that
with a unit such as this one, students will be held accountable
and responsible for the assigned readings and assignments in
order to stay on track without falling behind. After reading the
novel, students will be writing a five paragraph essay
comparing the story and the movie by citing evidence and
using information from both versions. I am always surprised to
see how many differences the students can find from the two
adaptations and look forward to seeing who can identify the
most.
Attached to this letter is an outline of expected assignments, a tentative schedule/ calendar
and a QR code to view and download the book at home using their school’s login
credentials.
Throughout the course of this literature study, students will be required and responsible for
maintaining and completing the following assignments.
• Chapter Vocabulary Terms and Definitions
• Chapter Story map • Chapter Vocabulary Quizzes
• Chapter Reading Quizzes • Chapter Summaries (1 paragraph) • Mid-Test (Ch. 1-25)
• Final Test (Ch. 26-50) • End-of-Book Project (Will be discussed after Chapter 25)
• End-of-Book Compare and Contrast Essay
Students will be responsible to read and complete the assigned tasks each day. Ideally, students are to read a
minimum of at least two chapters each day to stay on track without falling behind. Keep in mind that reading ahead is totally fine!
