WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

MINUTE FOR MISSION Nathan Schulzrinne

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, we come to you confessing that we do not listen well. We make rash decisions without seeking discernment in prayer. We place our hope in the ways of the world rather than in you. Forgive us for not listening to you, for not following your example in Scripture. Call us away from the ways of the world and back into your ways of love, justice and mercy. In the name of the Christ, the Good Shepherd who calls us by name, we pray.

PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks

through despair, life breaks through death.

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen.

* CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Hymnal No. 579 Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

* EXCHANGE OF PEACE

Leader: Let us open our hearts to one another as Christ has opened his heart to us, and God will be glorified.

People: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

(Exchange Signs of Reconciliation and the Peace of Christ with your neighbor - e.g., “The Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”

Response - “And also with you.”)

TODAYS MUSIC

Jean Langlais (1907-1991) occupied the organ bench once held by Franck in St. Clothilde in Paris. He brought a unique language to his organ compositions, many of which are based on Gregorian chant. His “Suite Breve” (1947) uses modern harmonies within classical forms. Ralph Manuel (b. 1951) has written various sacred choral anthems, vocal solos and duets, and keyboard arrangements. He and his wife, Donna, spent 24 years as missionaries of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Recife, Brazil. He currently serves as Minister of Music at Heritage Baptist Church in Norwood, Massachusetts. Today we recognize Good Shepherd Sunday with Harry Rowe Shelley’s setting of Psalm 23. Shelley (1858-1947) was organist at Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims in Brooklyn during the tenure of Henry Ward Beecher. Theodore Dubois (1837-1924) was awarded the Prix de Rome before serving as organist of the Madeleine in Paris and briefly as choirmaster at St. Clothilde with Franck. He taught at the Paris Conservatiore and served as its director. “Laus Deo” is the recessional from his suite of wedding music.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Psalm 23 (NRSV) 1The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; 3he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake. 4Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me. 5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD my whole life long. Acts 9:36-43 (NRSV) Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. 37At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. 38Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, “Please come to us without delay.” 39So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. 41He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. 42This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. 43Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner.
