Governor of the Month for February Hello, my name is Karen Manders. I started my role as a parent governor in September. I have always had an interest in the school and doing my part to help my local community. I don't get much spare time as I am a single parent to Ellie in Elm Class and Alex in Lime, as well as working. When I do get any spare time (!), I run. I run for my health but also for my sanity. I'm currently training to run my first marathon in April in Brighton. My background is healthcare; I'm a nurse practitioner and am involved in developing health provision in my surgery's community. I also coordinate the schools second hand uniform 'shop'. So if you have any school uniforms that can be reused please hand them to reception. Also if you need any uniform, prices for items range between 50p and £3. All money goes back into the school. Win, win! I look forward to seeing the classes in action in Feb-ruary and attending as many events as possible. Thank you, Karen.

Reading Workshop at Longleaze
- February 2016
“For I am a Bear of Very Little Brain, and long
words bother me.”
Winnie the Pooh was the very first book I ever read to my eldest daughter
(twenty-five years ago!), and we still share snippets from the stories that she
loved. However, as Pooh Bear himself says, words can be tricky and for some
children reading does not come easily. However, it is an essential skill for our
children, opening up a whole new world of enjoyment and learning.
To help your children make progress with their reading, we would like to invite
you to a Reading Parent/Carer information session, where we will offer tips
and strategies to support decoding and comprehension and to help your child
enjoy reading for pleasure.
This will run on the Tuesday 23rd February from 2.00pm to 3.00pm and will
be repeated at 5.30pm-6.30pm in the school hall. Please come in to school
through the main entrance.
Please contact Mrs Radford in the office and let her know which session you
are able to attend or use the school’s online booking system. As usual, there
will be a free Raffle to thank you for coming along.
Please note this is a different information session to the Reading Rangers
morning workshop on 11th February, which is for members of our community
who already volunteer to help with reading in school.
We look forward to seeing you soon!

Dear Parents and Carers
As part of our on-going commitment to raising standards, the school regularly evaluates its own
performance during a School Improvement Review (SIR). These are carried out by members of the
school’s Senior Leadership Team and a Head Teacher from another school or a school advisor from
the Local Authority. They take place three times a year. Evidence collected during SIRs includes
observations of teaching, the opinions of children and parents, performance data and evidence of
progress in exercise books. We are pleased to report the findings of our latest School Review,
which was carried out in Term 2.
The school has judged itself Good in all areas.
Some of the areas of strength included:
The use of the Chilli Challenge together with other effective teaching strategies allows children
to make good progress during lessons.
Adults use open ended questions to deepen children’s understanding.
The relationships between adults/ children, and children/ children are very positive. As a result,
children feel safe to have a go at answering questions.
Children have a good attitude to learning and are keen to improve themselves.
Children are interested in their learning because teachers give them a reason to learn.
We could be even better if we:
consider ways of recording more evidence in children’s books.
use lolly sticks more consistently throughout the school, when asking questions to the class.
display more subject specific vocabulary.
Our next School Review will take place in Term 4. We aim to build on the successes of the first half
of this year and continue to improve the standards within our school.
Kind regards
Mrs Pickard
