Issue 1 4th February 2019 Dear parents/ guardians,, Welcome to 2019 school year!! This looks to be another amazing year with many great opportunities for our students to shine. I hope that you all had a fabulous break and enjoyed the time with your families. Id like to extend a heartfelt welcome to all of our new families and students and look forward to getting to know you. Kindergarten students visited school last week for their Best Start assessments and commenced classes on Monday 4 February. It is wonderful to see all of their smiling faces. I am impressed with how well they are settling in. All students have returned to school happy and ready to learn and are quickly settling in to their new classes. Monday Assemblies It was decided at the strategic planning day last year that Monday morning assemblies will now be held on Monday afternoons commencing at 2:40pm. This is a chance for parents, along with students, to hear what is happening each week. These assemblies will be held under the cola in front of the Kindergarten rooms. Staff We would like to welcome back Mrs Mariela Silvera to the preschool. Mrs Silvera is well known amongst the community and I am sure many families will be happy to see her return. Welcome to Mrs Joanne Haikin who is our new permanent preschool teacher. Mrs Haikin will work part time with the possum group. She comes with experience and a very positive disposition. Welcome back to Mrs Rowland who is returning from maternity leave. She will work part time in the special education unit. I know her return will also bring smiles to the faces of many students. Mrs Belinda Morgan joins the special education team teaching on 1/2MR class, 4 days a week. We welcome her to the school. Her experience in this area will enrich the special education team. There are two new faces in the office, Mrs Mangrelli and Mrs Topalian. Mrs Mangrelli will work two days in the office, helping families with their day to day needs and Mrs Topalian will work two and a half days a week as Business Manager, supporting the executive of the school. Both of these ladies are already valued members of the Smithfield PS family and will be an asset to the office team. Congratulations During the holidays, Mr Khoury became a father with the birth of his beautiful daughter. Congratulations to Mr Khoury and his wife! May your daughter bring you both great happiness over the years. Congratulations also to Miss Best who was married during the holidays. We wish you all the best in your future as a married couple and welcome your new husband to the Smithfield family.

Field During the holidays, Mr Dom and Mr Udo worked very hard to restore the grass on the field. As you will appreciate, this is a difficult task as the field was quite barren at the end of the year, due to drier weather conditions and student wear and tear. In an attempt to completely restore the field, throughout the year, different parts of the field will be sectioned off, seeded and feed to allow it to grow. Although this will be a minor inconvenience, I am sure the students will appreciate being able to play on lovely grass instead of amongst the dirt and dust. Thank you to Mr Dom and Mr Udo for your consistent hard work in ensuring we have lovely grass around the school. Demountables Due to an increase in class numbers, before the end of last year, two new demountables were installed in Quietland. Although this has reduced the size of the playground, they were a necessary addition to ensure suitable learning environments for students. Hall Air Conditioning At the 2018 presentation assembly, Dr Hugh McDermott presented the school with a cheque for $27,995. This was the result of a successful grant the P&C applied for at the end of last year. Thank you to Dr McDermott for awarding our school this grant. Once the paper trail is complete, the air condition-ing units will be installed and I know we will all greatly appreci-ate this addition to the hall. Toilets As we start a new year, I would like to remind returning parents and inform new families, that any adults needing to use the toilet whilst on school premises (including those accompanying toddlers) are asked to use the toilets in the library. Toilets in the playground (at both ends of the school) are for students only. I ask parents and carers to respect this request in the interest of student safety. Community Engagement Look out for the Community Engagement Newsletter, which will come out later this term. It will include a variety of different ways you can be a part of the school, including courses specifically designed for you. If you have any questions regarding these opportunities, please see Mrs Sulaf Hamid or Mrs Sandy La in the office. Kindness This year we will continue with our focus on kindness. Students are encouraged and guided to be kind to one another and take any opportunity to display random acts of kindness. I ask parents and carers to support this initiative by reinforcing it at home. Kindness acts can be as simple as including someone in a game, helping someone carry something, paying someone a complement or even just a smile, wave and a nice greeting. Have a wonderful fortnight.
