Ireland – a former All-American and national champion under Herkimer’s Paul Wehrum – made his coaching debut for the Generals in 2012. In just a couple of seasons the resident on Norwalk, CT brought success back to the program, not losing a conference game (3-0) and accumulating a season-high seven wins from the middle of March to the middle of April in 2015. With keys wins against Dean and SUNY Delhi in that span, Herkimer caught the attention of the nation receiving the No. 7 ranking. Ireland and his team never dropped out of the Top 10 from that point capturing a regional playoff victory in dramatic fashion with an 11-10 win over SUNY Delhi in overtime at Wehrum Stadium in the quarterfinals, sweeping the Broncos in the process.

Its an honor to be recognized by a region with such great coaches as it relates to our success on the playing field this season, said Ireland. Its a direct result of my athletes superb performance, and the help I received from my assistant Kiel Adams day in and day out. Together they gave me everything they could, which resulted in a Region III playoff win. I hope they enjoyed the journey as much as I did!
