Arturo Sandoval
The arrival of celebrated trumpet player Arturo Sandovalhas been joyfully applauded throughout the jazz andclassical music communities. Granted political asylum inJuly 1990, Sandoval, his wife and teenage son made theirnew home in Miami, Florida. A protege of the legendaryjazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born inArtemisa, a small town on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba,on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespiebecame the first musician to bring Latin influences intoAmerican Jazz. Sandoval began studying classicaltrumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn't take him long tocatch the excitement of the jazz world. He has sinceevolved into one of the world's most acknowledgedguardians of jazz trumpet and fLugelhorn, as well as arenowned classical artist.
Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz,classical, rock and traditional Cuban music caused asensation throughout the entertainment world. In 1981,he left Irakere to form his own band, which garneredenthusiastic praise from critics and audiences all overEurope and Latin America. Sandoval was voted Cuba'sBest Instrumentalist from 1982 to 1990.
Before founding Irakere, Sandoval performed with theCuban Orchestra of Modern Music. He was presented asa guest artist with the BBC Symphony in London and theLeningrad Symphony in Russia. Since his defection,Sandoval has increased his classical performances world-wide including performances with the NationalSymphony, L.A. Philharmonic, Toledo Symphony,Oklahoma Symphony and Atlanta Symphony amongothers. His classical artistry has earned him the respect
and friendship of Maurice Andre and Adolph Herseth,two of the world's foremost trumpeters.
As a professor, Sandoval performed at the Conservatoirede Paris, the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in the SovietUnion, the U.C. Santa Barbara, University of Miami,University of Wisconsin, Perdue University and manyother institutions in the United States, Europe and LatinAmerica. Currently, he serves with a full professorship atFlorida International University and maintains one of themost extensive educational programs in the industry withapproximately fifty performances and clinics per year.There are two scholarships associated with Sandoval, the"Arturo Sandoval's Dizzy Gillespie Trumpet ScholarAward" at the University of Idaho and the "SandovalTrumpet Scholarship" at the Central OklahomaUniversity. In 1995 Hal Leonard Publishing releasedthree new method books with recording that includeArban and original exercises by Sandoval.
Sandoval was a featured artist in the acclaimed DizzyGillespie United Nation Orchestra, as well as theorchestra's 1992 Grammy-winning album, Live at RoyalFestival Hall. He has performed with Billy Cobham,Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Herbie Hancock, MichelLegrand, Stan Getz and John Williams at the BostonPops. His playing also can be heard on Dave Grusin'ssoundtrack for "Havana," in the "Mambo Kings"soundtrack with his Grammy nominated composition"Mambo Caliente," and in the soundtrack of "the PerezFamily." His diverse style and versatility can be heard onalbums by the GRP All Star Big Band and GloriaEstefan's Into The Light and Mi Tierra amongst others.
