Student musicians in theNorth Haven Middle Schoolband were well acquaintedwith the writer of two piecesthey performed at theirspring concert Wednesdaynight — the composer was afellow classmate.

Local eighth-grader BenPapsun crafted two songs onthe concert program, Stater-ae and Event Horizon.

“I’ve been here for 13 years— this is only the secondtime I’ve ever had a studentcompose something for us,”said NHMS seventh- andeighth-grade band DirectorBrian Hutton. “The kids ab-solutely love both pieces. Thepieces are age-appropriate indifficulty, but still challengethe kids to play something alittle bit harder.”

Papsun, who has played pi-ano since he was seven andtenor saxophone for fouryears, said that he regularlycomposes music for his ownenjoyment. “Somewherearound December I random-ly walked up to Mr. Huttonand asked if I could possiblywrite a piece for the schoolband to play,” Papsun said.

Hutton approved the pro-posal. “As a musician, Benhas an excellent ear,” theteacher said. “He also has agreat attention to detail plusa great drive for success.”

So Papsun began work onthe first of two songs, Stater-ae, which he explained isLatin for “balance,” an ap-propriate title consideringthe piece’s wide-rangingaim.

About one hour beforeNorth Haven High Schoolboys’ varsity lacrosse facedAmity in Woodbridge lastMonday, senior Alec Uyekigot the news that he wouldnot suit up as usual for of-fense.

“At the very last minute,we asked him to play goal,because out normal goaliehad to sit out with an in-jury,” said NHHS headcoach Bill Altman. “Uyekiwent from being an offen-sive player to becoming ourgoalie.”

Uyeki was up to the chal-lenge. Behind his 17 saves,the Indians topped Amity 6-5 in a back-and-forth affair.

“Uyeki had a phenome-nal game — that was key,”said Altman. “But so manyguys deserve shout-outs. Itwas a real team effort.”

Uyeki’s brother Colinscored two goals for NorthHaven, as did teammateJimmy Fredericks. IndiansQuincy Pecora and ChrisBroadbent added one goalapiece.

“It was a huge win forus,” Altman said. “I don’tknow if North Haven has

ever beaten Amity in thehistory of our program.”

North Haven’s defenseproved the difference mak-er in this low-scoring, one-goal game. “Our defensehas been such a strong suitall season long,” Altmansaid. “Going into the seasonwe knew our defense wouldbe a strength for us, and ithas held true to that.”

Amity scored first in theopening quarter, but NorthHaven netted a pair ofquick goals to take back the

lead at 2-1. The Spartanscountered with another tal-ly to end the first quarterknotted at two goals each.

The defensive battle con-tinued into the second quar-ter as Amity managed onlyone goal while holding theIndians scoreless to headinto halftime up 3-2.

“The kids were a littlesomber going into half-time,” Altman said. “Theydidn’t really know whatwas going on.”

During the intermission,Indian coaches erupted intoa boisterous motivationalspeech to try to spark thecaptains and the rest of theteam. Then the captainsstepped up and finished thespeech about working hardand playing up to one’s po-tential.

The move paid off.North Haven came out

with extra spring in theirstep and took charge ofthe game, scoring threequick goals to build up a 5-3lead while holding the

soring its fourth annual Earth Day Celebration on Satur-day, May 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Haven Mid-dle School, 55 Bailey Road.

Join us for information on organic gardening and lawncare, environmentally friendly products, ways to save en-ergy including fuel-efficient cars. Green businesses, envi-ronmental groups and community organizations will allbe in attendance.

There will be children’s activities including crafts andlive children’s music. On display will be projects andposters that were created by elementary and middleschool students. Free refreshments will be served.

In conjunction with the celebration, guided walks willtake place along the Quinnipiac River in North Havenand up Peter’s Rock Park.

Land Trustmeeting

The Annual Meeting of theNorth Haven Land Trust isscheduled for Tuesday, May15 at 6 p.m. at the NorthHaven Middle School Cafete-ria.

Following a brief businessmeeting there will be an edu-cational program featuringvisitors from The Children’sMuseum in West Hartford.There will be an assortmentof reptiles and amphibians,mostly animals that are ei-ther threatened or endan-gered species. Programstart time is 6:30 p.m.

The educational programsare always a popular event,especially for children.While their primary purposeis education, they also are anentertaining experiencewhen we have unusual visi-tors.

During these difficult eco-nomic times, many peopleare struggling to make endsmeet and thus are exploringnew ideas and options foremployment and relief.Longtime North Haven resi-dent Sallie Fowler hasturned a creative hobby into

a successful card businesscalled Uniquely Yours Cards.

“I started Uniquely YoursCards in 1995,” Fowler said.She already had been apply-ing her artistic skills profes-sionally. “In the early 1990s, Ihand-painted and stenciledclothing, sweatshirts and teeshirts, wooden articles, andneedlepoint pictures,” shesaid. “After accepting money

for a sweatshirt set and thentaking offers for more items,I realized that it wasn’t ahobby anymore. By the endof 1995, I discovered rubberstamping and the rest is his-tory.”

Fowler explained that inNovember of 1995 she wasteaching religious educationand needed a snowflake diecut for a class activity. Whileshopping in aparent/teacher store inMassachusetts, she found arubberstamp of a snowmanand some die ink. Having ex-perience with tissue paperand cardstock, Fowler madesome holiday cards.

“The holiday cards were abig hit and later I found twobooks on rubber-stamp mak-ing and taught myself,”Fowler said. “At that timethere were no rubber stampstores in Connecticut and norubber stamps in craftstores. Most of the manufac-turers were in California.”

Fowler continued, “I didnot give up and I was fortu-nate to be hired by Hero Rub-ber Stamps in California todemonstrate their stamps in

craft and toy stores and thisgave me the opportunity toexperiment with morestamps and inks.”

Fowler’s talent began togrow. Sometime later GaryBenzel, owner of the formerWindsor Shop in NorthHaven, gave her impetus —teaching after-school andadult-education programs.She was hired by Benzel todemonstrate the holidayhouses and snow babystamps at his ChristmasOpen House events.

“Working for Gary gaveme great exposure and was arewarding experience,”Fowler said. “I initially onlymade cards for friends, rela-tives, and co-workers. Then Istarted taking orders for hol-iday cards, which eventuallyled to the start of a divisioncalled Uniquely YoursCards.”

“I call my company, whichI operate from home Unique-ly Yours Cards because I amcreating products, one-at-a-time, that depict the person-ality and preferences of myrecipients and their friendsand relatives, and each item

is unique and special,” sheadded.

Through the years Fowlerhas expanded her collectionand products, which now in-clude greeting cards for mostof life’s yearly events such asbirthdays, graduation, wed-dings, get-well occasions,thinking of you, thank you,anniversary, sympathy, sum-mer, invitations and the vari-ous holidays.

“There is a lot of competi-tion in my field, but I feelthat my company stands outbecause my marketing planincludes not just making andselling cards, but sharing thecrafts with others by way ofadult education programs, atlibraries and other work-shops, and craft shows,” saidFowler. “I have participatedin North Haven’s Show andSell for the past two yearsand also have participated inthe Creative Arts Workshopin New Haven.”

Fowler is currently tryingto sell her cards on a con-signment basis, and hercards are now for sale at a

In August 2011, a NorthHaven resident reported$1,400 worth of jewelrystolen from her home onHartford Turnpike.

The victim, who spent aweekend away from herhome, had hired a dog sit-ter whom she had found onCraigslist.com. A NorthHaven officer determinedthat the dog sitter, 40-year-old Kathrine Meechan, hadtaken the jewelry from the

home and then sold thestolen items for $120.

Meechan, who is also aNorth Haven resident,was arrested by warranton April 24, 2012. She gotcharged with LarcenyFourth Degree, and FalseStatement Second Degree.She was scheduled to ap-pear in Meriden SuperiorCourt on May 3.

Bryan Nurnberger of Westport is thepresident and founder of “Simply Smiles,“a humanitarian not-for-profit organiza-tion that is “dedicated to providing brightfutures while improving the daily lives ofimpoverished children.”

Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation, theone-time rock climber, originally fromNaugatuck, described how he had trav-eled the world seeking adventure prior to aserious injury 10 years ago. The youngCEO brought his moving message to theNorth Haven Rotary Club recently, and re-mained after the breakfast meeting offer-ing bagged ground coffee which was grownin “a shockingly poor region of Oaxaca,Mexico” and shipped to Bethel, for roast-ing and packaging. Nurnberger sharedthat the proceeds from one bag of coffeewould feed a starving Mexican child forthree weeks. Headquartered in nearby

Norwalk, the 501c3 has gathered the assis-tance of over 2,000 volunteers from acrossthe world during the past six years, work-ing both in Mexico, and on a Sioux TribeReservation in South Dakota.

Nurnberger spends 60 percent of histime living among the poor who reside inbamboo huts in mountainous Mexico andwhose children used to eat leaves to offsetthe agony of starvation. The developmentof “The Village Project” to provide basichomes is one focus of his dream for thepeople he has come to love. In April 2009, I attendedan international missiontrip to Oaxaca, Mexico joint-ly organized by SimplySmiles — a non-profit organ-ization dedicated to improv-ing the lives of impover-ished children — and SilverLake Conference Center, aUnited Church of Christ

youth camp. I was one of 29volunteers from Connecticutto participate.

We all met in Fairfield tocarpool to JFK Airport forthe five-hour flight to Mexi-co City. After catching a con-necting flight to Oaxaca, wearrived at Casa Hogar, theorphanage where our groupwas based.

Children there range frominfants and toddlers to teens.

After attending a three-hour church service withthe children of Casa Hogaron Sunday, our work weekbegan on Monday. Weworked an eight-hour day atthe city dump, which was amountain of garbage cov-ered in dirt to compact the

trash.The dump is home to

dozens of stray dogs. Vul-tures fly above, giving it amorose feeling. Atop themound of trash is wheresome people of Oaxacamake their living, collectingrecyclables. This is usually

the only means of incomefor a family, so all membersof a family — including thechildren — pick through thetrash.

“It’s sort of like a moviesoundtrack,” he added. “Itstarts off slow, and thenbuilds up.”

True to his intentions,Staterae incorporated musi-cal roles for 15 different in-struments, including two dif-ferent trumpet parts, eupho-nium, triangle, violin andbass clarinet.

“He knew exactly whichstudents and instruments hewas writing for,” Hutton said.“He really customized this to

our group of kids, and I ap-plaud that.”

Staterae is approximately3.5 minutes long. Papsunwrote his tunes in the com-puter program Finale 2012, amodern method which actu-ally slowed completion of thefirst piece.

“I was working on it and Iwent into the computer to ac-cess the file and I found thathalf of it was gone,” he said.“It had all been erased and Icouldn’t do anything to re-cover it.”

However, the unexpectedloss turned out to be a cata-lyst for creativity. “Lookingat the end-product, I think itworked out for the better, be-cause I had to change a lot ofthings which I wouldn’t have

changed otherwise,” he said.“Even though I wasn’t thehappiest camper at the time,it worked out in the end.”

Having never used Finale2012 before, Staterae tooksome time to finish. But withthe first song under his belt,Papsun composed EventHorizon — 3.5 minutes inlength, but less complex thanStaterae — in just two weeks.

“Event Horizon is morerockish, kind of like the Mis-sion Impossible theme,” hesaid. “It’s fast-paced and ag-gressive.”

To compose a song, Pap-sun begins with the primarymelody. “I make the mainmelody and then I give it towhatever instrument I wantit to go to,” he said. “Then Istart thinking which otherinstruments would soundgood simultaneously. I startthinking about counter-melody. Sometimes I just ex-periment to see what works.”

“If I get an idea in my

head, I can’t just leave itthere — I have to do some-thing about it,” he added. “IfI have the main melody play-ing in the background withnothing else, then I can real-ly begin fleshing out whatcould work.”

For influence, Papsun lis-tens all over. “I have a lot ofreally weird musical tastes,”he said. “My usage of an un-usual time signature — 5/4— is inspired by the bandDream Theater. They usemany different time signa-tures.”

“I’m really into progres-sive rock, which is rock forpeople who get bored by nor-mal melodies,” he added.

During the concert, Pap-sun played tenor sax in Stat-erae and piano in EventHorizon. Fellow performersof the 85-member band havebeen supportive of theirclassmate’s compositions. “Iwasn’t expecting the re-sponse to be as positive, but

it really has been,” Papsunsaid. “People keep telling methat these are some of theirfavorite songs. They tell methat the songs get stuck intheir heads. That’s prettymuch what you’re going forwhen you write something.You want to make sure it’s ac-cessible.”

Papsun said that he nevercould have written eitherpiece without the help andencouragement of numerouspeople. “I have to give a lot ofcredit to my band,” he said.“They really pulled togetherin a short amount of time. Weonly had a month or so topractice the first one. We’veonly had two or three ses-sions for the second one.”

“Mr. Hutton has been ab-solutely fantastic — he’s beenmeeting with me and helpingme throughout this,” headded. “And Mr. Hutton ab-solutely pulled the band to-gether in a way that nobodyelse could.”

Papsun also credited hispiano teacher Art Bellucci asbeing instrumental in help-ing with multipart musiccomposition.

Mycards have received manynice compliments from fami-ly, friends and people I do notknow.”

For Fowler, the love forarts and crafts, coupled withdetermination to createone’s own personal business,

have proven to be a success-ful, educational and enjoy-able venture. Fowler believesthat everyone should pursuetheir dreams, use their tal-ents wisely and never giveup.

earns this way is approxi-mately $12 per month. I sawtwo boys picking through thetrash looking for books sothey could learn to read, be-cause they had to work in thedump rather than attendschool.

Many families live in tinyhomes on the outskirts ofthe dump. Our job was tobuild a house for a womannamed Soledad. We spent thefirst couple days chippingcinderblocks, sifting sandand mixing cement beforelayering these cinderblockbricks into a home. Thehomes are only one room,probably about the size of abedroom in a Connecticuthouse. They are 10 brickshigh in front, and 11 in theback to allow for water torun off the roof.

The house had only twowindows and one door. Likeall other residences at thedump, it had no plumbing orelectricity. Soledad’s entirefamily was to live in thishouse, which seemed muchtoo small; however, on our fi-nal night she told us, “In my

70 years, I have never re-ceived such a gift.”

Our group completed oth-er tasks such as painting ahouse built by a previouswork group. We painted theoutside bright orange andthe inside pale orange, as itis the custom for the recipi-ents of the homes to choosethe color. When that wascompleted, we dug an eightfoot hole to serve as a latrinefor another family.

Each night, we came backto Casa Hogar and playedwith the children. Casa Hog-ar is the only orphanagesouth of Mexico City to ac-cept children with specialneeds. Children come toCasa Hogar for a better lifebecause their families can-

not take care of them.Among the children that I

met were Angelito, bornwith no eyes, but he man-ages just fine; Luz, borndeaf, although she does sowell, I didn’t realize shecould not hear until later inthe week; and Ricardo, in awheelchair, who spent thefirst eight years of his lifetied to a chair because hisfamily didn’t know how tocare for him. The childrenwere warm and friendly, andthrived on the friendship weprovided — we, in return,were blessed to meet them.

hell-bent on eliminating Sat-urday delivery and closingmany processing centersaround the country. If suc-cessful, this will be only thefirst step towards the demiseof the Service. This is partof the master plan, concoct-ed by high ranking membersof management and certainmembers of Congress, whopreach the concept of priva-tization.

Ask any old timer, in theservice, or retiree, and theycan tell you of many of theschemes and “experiments”concocted by management,over the years. They alwaysmanage to “shoot them-selves in the foot.” One suchexperiment took place in thelate 1980s. A local supervisorcame up with a plan of mov-ing many carriers to theBrewery Street location inNew Haven. This included

many from outlying officesin the New Haven area. Theresult was much more over-time, more gasoline con-sumption and, in general, avery expensive deal for theservice. (Not to mention,very late mail delivery formany patrons.) The idea wasabandoned after about oneyear. The supervisor in-volved was rewarded by atransfer to Hartford, andkicked upstairs.

The public should beaware of the lesson learned:Do not be taken in by anypropaganda put out byPostal Management, at anylevel.

7 p.m. in the CommunityRoom at the North Haven Li-brary, the commission willbe deciding whether or notto adopt Housing Opportuni-ty Zone (HOZ) “common in-terest condo community”and Affordable Housing Op-portunity Zone (AHOZ)“common interest condocommunity with one-thirdaffordable.”

HOZ and AHOZ are in thebest interests of greedy de-velopers who are poised tobegin building, without ob-jection, unlimited, 150-unitcondo communities on R40zoned parcels (only 10 acresare required) with direct ac-cess onto state highwayssuch as Routes 17, 22, 103and 5.

No objections will be al-lowed because under AHOZ,no public hearings will berequired, and under HOZ,no public hearings will berequired for detached con-dos. There will be unlimited

Standing up for themiddle class

Since announcing my can-didacy for the US Senate inJanuary of 2011, I have hadthe opportunity to meet withpeople throughout Connecti-cut. No matter where I go thestory I hear is the same. Peo-ple feel that America is fac-ing an economic calamitycaused by corporate specialinterests, Wall Street, and aCongress that takes ordersfrom these groups instead ofthe middle class.

The economy is broken,millions of homeowners areunderwater on their mort-gages, and small businessescannot get the loans theyneed to make their businesswork. This was all caused be-cause Wall Street played fastand loose with the rules andgambled on our economy.They gambled, we lost, andthe bill is being paid by us.

This is why I wrote an Ac-countability Plan that out-lines real, meaningful, anddetailed proposals to holdWall Street, corporate spe-cial interests, and Washing-ton accountable to the mid-dle class. My plan would putthe middle class first again,and it wouldn’t cost taxpay-ers more: in fact, it would re-duce the debt nearly $2 tril-lion over the next 10 years, alot more than the dysfunc-tional Washington “debtcommission” could muster.

My plan starts with a sim-ple idea: make Wall Street re-pay some of the money they

made on the backs of themiddle class through high-risk gambling, and use thosefunds to help the homeown-ers who have been draggeddown in the economic disas-ter Wall Street created.

Specifically, Wall Streetbanks committed fraud byselling sub-prime mortgagederivatives at the same timethey were betting againstthose derivatives with creditdefault swaps. They took out-rageous risks on highlyleveraged bets. So we shouldmake Wall Street repay thismoney through a smalltransaction tax that impactsshort-term, high volumetrading. With these funds,we can provide mortgage re-lief to middle class familieswhose homes are now worthless than they owe. This willhelp millions of middle classhomeowners, stabilize thehousing market, boost oureconomy, and save our coun-try nearly $1.4 trillion overthe next ten years.

My plan also returns ourfocus in this country to themiddle class: giving themthe tax breaks, not the bigcorporations, and givingthem the loudest voice inWashington, not the specialinterests, lobbyists, and in-cumbent Members of Con-gress who exist in a cozyWashington cocoon.

Remember the days whenyou had juice with breakfastjust because it tasted good?Remember when there wereonly a few kinds of juices tochoose from: orange, grape-fruit, tomato or grape? Re-member when you chosejuice by what you likedrather than by what it coulddo for you? Today, juice prod-ucts claim all kinds of healthbenefits. But are they reallytrue? Is juice always the bestfood choice for the nutritionclaim being promised?

The makers of juices andjuice products have gonecrazy with nutritionalclaims. But you will neverget the same nutrition bene-fits from a glass of juice asyou would from a piece offruit, especially in terms offiber content. Moreover, ithas been demonstrated thateating a fruit makes you feel

fuller and more satisfiedthan drinking a glass ofjuice. (This is important forthose trying to lose or watchtheir weight.)

In the January/February2008 edition of The Nutri-tion Action Healthletter, sev-eral interesting points weremade about juice and goodnutrition. A few key points ofthe article included:

— For the most part,juices, even with extra pulp,are not good sources of fiber.The only juice with signifi-cant fiber content is prunejuice.

— If you are concernedabout getting enough vita-mins, take a once-a-day vita-min supplement, rather than

relying on a juice. You will besure of the amount of the vi-tamins you are getting andwill not get the calories thatcome with the juice. Juiceswith added calcium and Vita-min D can help people reachtheir daily targets.

— Most of the nutritionclaims made on juices are“structural” claims ratherthan “functional” claims.Structural claims do not re-quire the level of scientificproof that a functionalclaims does. For example, ajuice can claim it “helps pro-tect healthy joints” but itcannot say it helps arthritis.

— Don’t be misled by anAmerican Heart Associationcheckmark on a juice prod-uct. This symbol generallymeans that a product is lowin saturated fat and choles-terol. Well, most juices (andfruits) are!

There is much risk andreward in Connecticut’s re-ported plans to allocate$250 million over five yearsto back high-tech startupcompanies. While job cre-ation and economic expan-sion are possible advanta-geous outcomes, like anyventure investment thishas no guarantee to pro-duce returns. At the veryleast, though, by openly al-lotting funds for small-business aid, legislators ap-pear serious about foster-ing a more pro-business at-mosphere in a state notnecessarily known to haveone.

According to a recent As-sociated Press article,“Half of the $250 millionwill come from returns oninvestment tied to the per-formance of the volatilestock market, with the oth-er half coming from thestate Bond Commission.”Project leaders are theBond Commission andConnecticut Innovations,the state’s semi-publicventure investment agency.Primary motivation is tolower Connecticut unem-ployment, which has re-mained above 8 percentsince May 2009. Bringing innew businesses potentiallyon the verge of bloomingcould help grow employ-ment opportunities, espe-cially in top-paying, in-de-mand markets. Already,state leaders are percep-tively targeting companiesin life sciences, medical de-vices, information technol-ogy, software and digitalmedia.

Of course, danger existsin supporting startups.Percentages which eventu-ally turn large profits forinitial investors are low.Some state-backed busi-nesses will fold, showingnothing for money whichcould have funded otherforms of addressing un-employment problems.And many companies onlyrefund the principal plussome return — actually, not

a regrettable scenario forConnecticut, for spendingat least yielded extra jobs.

Regardless of monetarypayoffs, this initiative is apositive step toward endingConnecticut’s unhelpfulreputation to some as beingbusiness-unfriendly.

Modern technology hascreated a global market-place where competitionfor top-earning companies— important municipaltaxpayers — occurs in aworldwide arena. Each day,different states and coun-tries fight to entice awayConnecticut’s and Ameri-ca’s best businesses by of-fering fiscal incentives. Forour state to retain first-class companies, or to behome for tomorrow’s high-level businesses, we mustgive such organizationsworthwhile reasons to re-main.

Beyond incentives suchas $250 million worth ofinvestments, the statecontains another asset ofvalue here — universitiesand colleges like Yale,UConn and Quinnipiac. In-stitutions of higher learn-ing supply research oppor-tunities and well-educatedpersonnel for high-techworkplaces, especiallywhen the two organiza-tions are within close prox-imity. By increasing num-bers of businesses whichspecialize in technologyand other contemporaryfields, Connecticut can re-tain its intellectual capitalbefore these people leavefor lucrative careers else-where in America or othercountries.

Politicians are wise to of-fer seed money for moderncompanies but should ex-tend deals only after thor-ough scrutiny of eachbusiness and its prospectfor profitability. Althoughthis boils down to risk andreward, one benefit is defi-nite. Legislators have craft-ed a plan which shouldhelp chip away at notionsthat Connecticut is anti-

numbers of condo communi-ties popping up all overtown, because once the twozones are added to the zon-ing regulations, these condodevelopments will be permit-ted in the Town of NorthHaven. The PZC and the peo-ple will be powerless to stopdevelopers!

HOZ and AHOZ are not inthe best interests of the resi-

dents, because of thetremendous populationgrowth (each unit can havethree bedrooms) which willresult from all the condocommunities. This will sig-nificantly burden/strain thetown’s infrastructure, whichwill lead to public health,safety and welfare hazardsand exorbitant tax increas-es. In addition, developerswill profit regardless of thedepressed economy, becausewhen the 150 units in the

condo communities don’tsell, developers will have theright to fill the units withrenters.

The Indians scored thefirst goal in the fourth quar-ter to expand their lead to 6-3and then hung on as Amityscored a couple of late goalsto close out a hard-fought 6-5North Haven win.

“I’m really proud of thekids,” Altman said. “Theydid all the little things weasked them to do. They re-sponded very well to coach-ing. It was a tremendousteam effort.”

“Our defense did a greatjob,” he added. “And ball pos-session was critical. In a one-goal game, it only takes oneplay to make a difference.”

With six games remaining,the win improved the Indi-ans’ record to 6-4 overall andmoved them to within onewin of qualifying for theState’s Class L Champi-onship, which begins later inMay.
