St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church
Dear Friends, This weekend our parish celebrates with the people of El Salvador. We celebrate with them by imitating a particular event that they have in San Salvador on this same weekend, associated with the Transfiguration of the Lord (liturgically observed on August 6). Our Mass with Monsignor Elias from El Salvador (Fr. Alan’s bishop) and the procession afterwards into the streets remind us of the reality of the Lord’s Presence among His people. As well, we recognize that there are great needs in our world, as there are here in our parish and in El Salvador. What is the answer to the needs we experience? Jesus is
always the answer, the one which ultimately satisfies.
Lately, we are hearing more sad news about scandals in the Church. The abuse scandals hurt all of us. The victims who suffer so greatly deserve our prayers and support. The perpetrators need our prayers too. And the Lord Himself calls us to make prayers and sacrifices for healing and in reparation for these sins against Him, against Him in His people. Jesus Our Savior waits for us to turn to Him and to return to Him. So many things attract our interest and confuse our hearts and minds! The tragic news of abuse, natural disasters, violence, and all manner of things contrary to the love of Jesus call us to be more determined in our efforts to live for Jesus and with Jesus. El Salvador is a poor and humble country which was named in honor of Jesus Our Savior. Recalling His poverty and the humiliations He freely accepted on our behalf can be instructive for us today. Jesus remains among His suffering people. He says to us: “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life….” With my prayers, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler Pastor

Queridos amigos, Este fin de semana nuestra Parroquia se une a la fiesta de la comunidad salvadoreña. Celebramos con ellos, imitando un evento particular que tienen en San Salvador este mismo fin de semana, asociado con la Transfiguración del Señor (litúrgicamente observado el 6 de agosto). Nuestra Misa con el Monseñor Elías de El Salvador (el Obispo del Padre Alan) y seguido por la procesión en las calles, nos recuerda la veracidad de la presencia del Señor entre su pueblo. Además, reconocemos que hay grandes necesidades en nuestro mundo, como las que existen aquí en nuestra Parroquia y en El Salvador. ¿Cuál es la respuesta a las necesidades que experimentamos? Jesús siempre es la
respuesta, la que finalmente satisface.
Últimamente, estamos escuchando más noticias tristes sobre los escándalos en la Iglesia. Los escándalos de abuso nos lastiman a todos. Las víctimas que sufren merecen nuestras oraciones y apoyo. También los perpetradores necesitan nuestras oraciones. Y el Señor mismo nos llama a hacer oraciones y sacrificios por la curación y la reparación de estos pecados contra Él, contra Él en su pueblo. Jesús, nuestro Salvador, espera que nos volvamos a Él y regresemos a Él. ¡Muchas cosas atraen nuestro interés y confunden a nuestros corazones y mentes! Las trágicas noticias de abuso, desastres naturales, violencia y todo tipo de cosas contrarias al amor de Jesús, nos llaman a ser más decididos en nuestros esfuerzos por vivir para Jesús y con Jesús. El Salvador es un país pobre y humilde que fue nombrado en honor a Jesús, nuestro Salvador. Recordando Su pobreza y las humillaciones que El aceptó libremente en nuestro nombre puede ser ilustrativo para nosotros ahora. Jesús permanece entre Su pueblo sufriente. Part-time Shuttle Bus Driver St. Anthony of Padua School is seeking a part-time shuttle bus driver five days a week, regular hours are 7:00-8:30 am and 2:30-4:00 pm. The position requires driving students between the St. Philip Early Childhood Center and St. Anthony of Padua campus. Applicants need a valid Virginia driver’s license, a medical certificate done by a DOT certified physician, Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL), adult and child CPR or CPR/PR, first aid, and AED certifications. Parish Registration If you are not receiving mail from the parish, chances are that you are not registered. Whether it's your first time here, or you have been coming to Mass here for years, we welcome you to join St. Anthony of Padua Parish.
Often people attend Mass at St. Anthony of Padua for several years, but never register. Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and to make a commitment to the life of the parish community. Being a registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, religious education, weddings, and even funerals.
In order to register at St. Anthony of Padua, you need to complete a registration form. The parish office is open throughout the week. Also, forms are available on the shelf in the back of church, labeled “Church Forms,” or on our website www.stanthonyparish.org. Why not sign up today?
