The famous metaphor by Dr. Radhakrishnan, “Libraries are the heart of an institution,” has endured unlimited time and now is the time to realize the importance of academic libraries in higher educational institutions.

The workshop started with an inaugural session where all guests spoke the way in which academic libraries have transcended from

just serving with a physical space to getting involved with the research life cycle.

Ms. Swati Meherishi

Executive Editor, Springer Nature

Prof. Chauhan, Dean, Research and Consultancy at Bennett started with how the University has implemented a

research-driven culture from B.Tech to PhD and has imbibed a very strong PhD program which is uniquely funded.

With research as his core area, he emphasised upon three important aspects that research scholars need to embark upon

before starting a research. According to him, original ideas, concepts and clarity of scientific judgment (at the abstract

level) should be focused which automatically will keep away plagiarism.

Dr. Raghunath K. Shevgaonkar, Vice Chancellor, Bennett University

In Bennett University, Libraries are called as the Learning Resource Centre and it has stand to

prove it. In the words, of Dr. Shevgaonkar, Vice Chancellor at Bennett, “Dr. Sanjay Kataria has really been

working hard all these years and he is the biggest resource of the LRC. “ He also exclaimed how Bennett University has

been growing enormously within a short span of only 4-years. He was also delighted to report that the first Phd

degree was awarded just a month ago with reasonable publication and presently there are around 70-80 candidates.

Eminent Speakers of the Workshop

Opening Ceremony

Research has to be done at a level that our dependency on a foreign country reduces greatly. The faculty handling the research department should allow themselves to explore associated areas of field in which they have done their Ph.D. and help students doing research under them to understand the quality and methods of proper research by finding a problem and then finding a solution.

Prof. D.P. Agrawal, Former UPSC Chairman, Chief Guest

Dr. Sanjay Kataria, University Librarian & Workshop Director welcomed all guests and participants and

put forth the underlying vision behind conceptualizing such a large-scale workshop. The main idea behind

organizing such a program was to provide an exposure to the authors about the emerging technology and

tools to support research. He emphasised upon the significance of each topic under

discussion designed with utmost care to cover all areas right from preparing a raw

manuscript to publishing impactfully!

Editors from Springer emphasized young authors to create an ORCID specifying its importance and the advantages.

The session was vibrant, interactive and innovative with

speakers posing questions to participants to find out

learning outcomes and do away with monotony.

Every day, the sessions were flabbergasted with information, specially for budding researchers, from eminent scholars and expertise speakers towards all essentials of supporting research. All important stakeholders from academia and publishing touched every nook and corner, from preparing a manuscript to publishing.

Speakers from the Industry spoke on the unethical issue of

gifting authorship. Also about the unethical practice of not

including someone who has contributed to the paper but not

given the authorship.

Audio/video embedded in presentation constantly helped the spirits keep high and motivated reducing ambiguity

in requirement specification of Publishing House—From Industry Experts directly!

Even in book publishing, publishers look out for cutting-edge and original research, strong theoretical underpinning in

literature , should have international or regional appeal (like the present case of corona virus ongoing globally) and last

but not the least should well connect with the audiences. Few points one should keep in mind while submitting a

proposal for book publishing

Day 2 session was designed entirely to ensure that it contains topics which are of direct relevance to research writers. Mr. Vishav Sharma, Senior Solutions Consultant at Clarivate Analytics conducted his session on various analytical tools and provided quick tips on where to publish, how to publish, what are the points to be taken care of while selecting journals, etc. Some of the key takeaways from his session are research matrices, journal finder, JCR, research networks, researcher

How to calculate Impact Factor of Journals, how to

identify good journals by glancing at the impact factors.

He also explained how impact factors in scientific

journals varies from that of Social Sciences journal.

The quartiles of journal impact factor

One of the very useful tools in finding journals through

Endnote. Endnote can be used to find out Journals which in-

clude open access journals as well. On inserting the abstract

on this tool “Endnote Manuscript Matcher,” and it prompts

best fit journals.

He shed light on how researchers should take into

consideration preparatory journals, fake journals and how important it is for one not to publish in anonymous names.

This ambiguity can be removed by creating a unique ORCID. He explained how authors and researchers hold a

misconception of thinking a journal indexed in Web of Science must have a good impact factor. new and innovative

research built on existing information.

Last but not the least, Mr. Sharma also talked about a tool from Clarivate, which is Journal Citation Reports. It shows all

journals indexed in web of science. Comparing journals, select & compare, view any type if changes, discontinued

journals.

Her session was on research data management tools. She took

the participants through the life cycle of research data and

explained how important each cycle is!

She shed light on some research data management tools like

Zotero, Mendeley, Dataverse, GitHub, etc, and how Havard

University manages data for research.

Endnote Manuscript Matcher TOOL” - A vey

Important tool used by industry experts

7

The Open Science Framework is a free, open source web application that connects and supports the research workflow, enabling scientists to increase the efficient and effectiveness of their research.

OSF manages research projects at all stages of the research lifecyle and connects the tools researchers use. OSF tools are used by researchers to collaborate, document, archive, share, and register projects, materials and data. She also showed through examples how the OSF tools function.

She also shared how Harvard University managed a separate repository (dataverse), following COVID-19 to help researchers by storing data related to research carried out by the University. She also shared how tools like Figshare and Vivli can be used by researchers to preserve and share their research outputs, including figures, datasets, images, and videos.

It is free to upload content and free to access and in adherence

to the principle of open data. With this, came an end to enrich-

ing Day 2 session. Enthused participants definitely gained in-

sights from the speakers that will help them in their research in

future.

Day 3 session started with speakers Ms Kirsty Wallis, acting as Head of Research Liaison at University College London

and Dr. Priya Rai Deputy Librarian at National Law University, Delhi. Topics under discussion were Research Data

Management Essentials and Copyright Law and Creative Commons. License

Though the topics under discussion were though quite complicated but the speakers provided some quick tips for authors to take care of while managing data, the importance of data management and the importance of data management plan.

However, one has to adhere to various policies at institute level and funding level and confirm if data protection legislation applies to the data collected.

Technical Sessions: Day 3

8

She started with some case studies and explained

how copyright acts should be protected.

She discussed many case studies, among which one was the case of (Rameshwari Photocopy services) dealing with unrestricted photocopy.

In her session, Dr. Rai discussed about the differences

between copyright and creative commons and how

creative commons can be used for non-commercial

purposes.

Dr. Priya also emphasised on the importance of Crea-tive Commons Zero or CC0CC.

The session ended with a Question/Answer forum

where several important questions were taken from the enthusiasts’ participants.

Ms Wallis emphasised on the importance of certain points that are to be taken care of while embarking upon saving

research data which includes identifying all complying rules and policies, identifying data sharing agreements, or

legal/ethical background checking, verifying deadlines and many more.

Dr. Priya Rai, Deputy Librarian at National Law University, Delhi was the second speaker for the day. Topics under discussion were on Copyright and Creative Commons License.

9

Day 4 session started with Dr. Ramesh Gaur, his topics were Research Writing Essentials – Search Research and

Publication Ethics. In the words of Dr. Gaur, “when we are reporting a research we have to be clear in our ideas as

to what we are researching, for whom to publish the report and are we doing it the way it is to be ?”

According to him the culture of collaboration in India is

quite poor to the counterparts. Underlying problems

may be lack of recognition, research profiling, lack of

awareness in terms of copyright and plagiarism issues.

He started by describing various types of plagiarism including accidental, incidental, self and many more.

While talking about the topic, he came up with a glaring example of a student who went to S. Korea and showed that he had published 7 articles.

Later on, it was found that all data were fake and this person was blacklisted for falsification, which is a kind of intentional crime.

Technical Sessions: Day 4

10

Some of the important parameters that authors need to judge before using any software is to look for

Languages available in the plagiarism detection tool and its user-friendliness. Cases of plagiarism are many in

India. At the end of the day, it is upto the researcher, if concept is clear and well researched, the outcome is

bound to be free of plagiarism.

Dr. Neeraj Singh’s topic for the day was Plagiarism Detection Software with Live Demo on URKUND and

Turnitin. He started with all UGC initiatives for the improvement of the quality of doctoral research.

Dr. Neeraj then went on with explaining the features of URKUND and Turnitin

According to him, both software are good in their own terms but it is ultimately upto the researcher as to how they

would publish their report.

Some of the important parameters that we need to judge before using any software is to look for

Languages available and user-friendliness.

Last but not the least, whatever idea are getting from any of the source (audio/video), it should be acknowledged. The Day 4 session ended.

11

Mr. Tripathi explained various features of Mendeley citation tool and its usability as a reference management tool.

Some of the essential services by the tool includes search for research, organizing research, read and collect thought,

compiling a bibliography, organizing reference and citing while writing, which is the most useful feature of Mendeley.

He also explained how Mendeley can be used on Android and it’s features facilitates in collaboration, creating groups, sending invite to share literature and track and respond to commentary and find funding agencies as well.

With 2 GB space, the tool is very much user-friendly and one may always check for its functionalities in the web.
