Dear Friends of Senior Services of Alexandria, SSA has continued to grow with the population of seniors and their needs. In order to achieve our goals, it takes the efforts of our incredible staff; caring volunteers; city and government partners; fellow community organizations, leaders and our talented board of directors all working together. Behind those helping hands are the donations that keep the “wheels” of our current programs moving forward and ignite new ideas and programs. Just a few highlights in 2015/2016 are:

Senior Academy: The first class of 30 attendees completed a four-week program, learning how the City operates, what services are available to seniors, and how they can get engaged.

Groceries to Go Program: Every week, clients can choose from Giant or Harris Teeter.

MOW goes on despite the January blizzard: SSA led a team effort with community volunteers and the Sheriff’s Department to get food to seniors. NBC News 4 ran a feature about SSA’s efforts.

Silver Service Card: SSA introduced a new discount program for seniors. Alexandria seniors 60+ can receive discounts at 15 businesses in the Del Ray section of the City with plans underway to expand Citywide this summer.

Gala: The Goodhart and Porterfield families were honored with our Generation to Generation Award, and former Board member Art Sauer received the first ever “Special Service” Award in recognition of his dedication to SSA and our community.

It is exciting to see how SSA continues to develop as an organization. Thank you for your part in our growth and your continued support!

Sincerely,

Donna J.H. Shaw Chairman, Board of Directors

SSA’s Connections to the Community

Since its inception in 1968, SSA has served as a vital connection for seniors to the Alexandria community. As the senior population continues to grow, SSA’s programs and services will grow as well to help fill the “gap” when seniors have nowhere else to turn. Here are the current SSA services and programs:

Senior Nutrition Program

Meals on Wheels and SSA Direct A life-sustaining program that allows seniors who are unable to leave their homes, or who have difficulty preparing a meal, to have two healthy meals a day delivered to their homes. Meals

are delivered by over 350 dedicated volunteers, 365 days a year, including

holidays.

BB&T Bank Delivers Meals on Wheels

Groceries to Go

In partnership with Giant Foods and Harris Teeter, volunteers deliver groceries year-round to seniors every Thursday. Groceries are

ordered over the phone based on the grocery recipient’s personal shopping list.

Karen Delivering Groceries to Irene

AniMeals

SSA and the Alexandria Animal Welfare League have teamed up to form a monthly pet food delivery program for low-income seniors and their pets. These deliveries occur on the second Thursday of each month. Participants have the option of being delivered 10

cans of wet food or 10 lbs. of dry food.

Tom & Dan Delivering AniMeals

Friendly Visitor Program

Carefully screened and trained volunteers are individually matched with socially isolated seniors with whom they visit for at least an

hour each week year-round. All seniors are also interviewed regarding their personal history and interests, to facilitate a

compatible match.
