When teeth erupt, brush twice daily with an infant toothbrush. For children less than 2 years of age, use a pea-sized "smear" of toothpaste to brush the teeth. You should perform or assist your child's toothbrushing. Young children do not have the manual dexterity (muscle coordinaon) to perform tooth brushing all on their own, although I do recommend encouraging them to help. YOUR PEDIATRIC DENTIST CAN HELP WITH MANY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS Prevenon is the key concept in early dental care. Early childhood cavies (previously known as baby bole tooth decay) is a significant concern and major cause of infecon, missed school, and hospital visits for young children. Once your baby's diet includes anything other than breast milk, the teeth are at increased risk for cavies (tooth decay). Early intervenon leads to effecve prevenon of these significant risks. Your child's smile and bite are important to their physical and social development. Start developing good dental habits now with consistent visits to your pediatric denst. “Your child should see the pediatric denst to establish a dental home, receive a dental examinaon and prevenve care that can protect your child's teeth and smile into the future.” DAVID CAGGIANO, M.S., D.M.D

EARLY INTERVENTION CAN PREVENT BIGGER PROBLEMS LATER IN LIFE

Your child should see the denst by their first b irthday, or whenever the first tooth erupts. Usually between 6-12 months of age, the first tooth comes in. Your chi ld should see the pediatric denst to establish a dental home, receive a dental examinaon and prevenve care that can protect your child's teeth and smile into the future.

TOOTH DECAY CAN HAPPEN VERY EARLY IN LIFE (EVEN IN CHILDREN STILL BREAST FEEDING

Aer the first teeth come in, at will breast feeding should be avoided and addional sources of nutrion can be started. Avoid pung your child to sleep w i t h a b o l e c o n t a i n i n g anything other than water. Sugary drinks, like fruit juice, should be avoided or minimized to meal me only. “Sippy” cups follow the same rules as the bole. Allowing your child to

have at-will access to a “sippy” cup (with anything other than water) dramacally increases the risk for tooth decay.

BAD HABITS CAN LEAD TO TOOTH AND JAW ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS

Although thumb sucking is normal for infants, extended fi n g e r h a b i t s c a n c a u s e misaligned teeth and even jaws. Most children stop thumb sucking by 24 months. We recommend evaluaon by a pediatric denst if the child is sll thumb sucking beyond age 3. The pediatric denst can recommend several ways to address a prolonged thumb habit.

GOOD ORAL HYGIENE STARTS NOW!

One of the most common quesons I rece ive as an orthodonst is "when should I start brushing my baby's teeth?" Start at birth. Clean your baby's g u m s w i t h a s o i n f a n t toothbrush or cloth and water. When teeth erupt, brush twice

daily with an infant toothbrush. For children less than 2 years of age, use a pea-sized "smear" of toothpaste to brush the teeth. You should perform or assist your child's toothbrushing. Young children do not have the manual dexter i ty (muscle coordinaon) to perform tooth brushing all on their own, although I do recommend encouraging them to help.

YOUR PEDIATRIC DENTIST CAN HELP WITH MANY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

Prevenon is the key concept in e a r l y d e n t a l c a r e . E a r l y childhood cavies (previously known as baby bole tooth decay) is a significant concern and major cause of infecon, missed school, and hospital visits for young children. Once your baby's d iet inc ludes anything other than breast milk, the teeth are at increased risk for cavies (tooth decay).

Early intervenon leads to effecve prevenon of these significant risks. Your child's smile and bite are important to t h e i r p hys i ca l a n d s o c i a l development. Start developing good dental habits now with c o n s i s t e n t v i s i t s t o yo u r pediatric denst.
