Five-Year Professional Development and Action Plan
Year Career Academic/Professional Development Mentorship/Network Dev2015-2016
Seek new professional mid-level position in inclusion, access, retention, or assessment.
Learn new office, department, & institutional culture
Get involved with university level committee work, preferably around governance
Continue to read newest issues of journals, student affairs and higher Ed blogs and articles, and stay up to date with local and national issues affecting education.
Complete online or in person course on SPSS and R Attend assessment/evaluation/research focused conference Submit conference session proposals to NASPA/ACPA Become more involved with ACPA Commissions or NASPA Knowledge Communities around
social justice, Assessment, Evaluation, and Research, and Men and Masculinity. Seek leadership role
Research and further develop skills around research, assessment, and evaluation Seek out opportunities, research, and best practices to improve supervision and mentoring
practice. Further develop affective and helping skills through trainings and intentional improvement of
practice
Develop mentor network at new institution
Make concerted effort to stay consistently connecting with existing mentors and network
Seek out new professionals and grad students to develop mentoring relationships
Discuss ethical issues and challenges with mentors and mentees
2016-2017
In year two of position, seek out additional responsibilities with an emphasis on supervision of pro staff
Join university committee dealing with crisis management
Advise a student organization if possible
Research doctoral programs in education, sociology, and statistics, and master’s programs in data analytics and statistics. Apply for following year
Conduct research on retention/persistence or experiences of white, male college students. Seek to publish
Apply for SJTI internship and attend Facing Race, White Privilege Conference, or NCORE to further improve equity, inclusion, and facilitation skills
Improve SPSS and data analysis skills to improve assessment and evaluation practice Refine leadership and supervision strategy to reflect strengths and areas for improvement Look to advanced training in conflict resolution and/or non-violent communication to improve
communication and leadership skills
Continue to invest in mentor/mentee relationships
Support mentors/supervisors in their research
Discuss future career goals and potential paths
2017-2018
Seek out director level positions or new opportunities for growth and supervision skill development
Advise student media
Begin part-time or hybrid doctoral or masters program. Continue with previous year’s research and seek out additional publishing opportunities
Continue to improve teaching and facilitation skills through practice, feedback from mentors and students, and additional training opportunities
Improve budgeting and fiscal management skills Return to and revise professional competency assessment to identify areas for growth
