A Joint MSc Programme (120 ECTS) MER MSc is a Joint European MSc programme aimed to form multidisciplinary graduates of transverse research profile, by attracting highly qualified and motivated students from around the world into a fully integrated world class EU MSc programme. The MER MSc programme gives students competences and skills to develop their marine career in the following fields: • Integrated coastal zone management • Protection of marine and estuarine environments • Adaptation to global climate change • Assessment of marine ecosystem health • Conservation of biodiversity and natural heritage • Management of fisheries and other marine resources Both staff exchange and student mobility are promoted under a balanced ECTS scheme. Every student must spend at least 30 ECTS each in three different Partner Universities. Successful students will achieve a MSc degree (120 ECTS) awarded by the three Partner Universities, through which the studies have been undertaken; in recognition of the MER Joint MSc Programme offered by the four Partner Universities.

The MER MSc Programme, originally designed to integrate parts of existing curricula and “ad hoc” newly created modules, was run for the first time in the 06‐07 academic year (with 11 registered students).
Based on previous experiences and available teaching staff, a tremendous effort was made to bring together former courses and adapt and complement with new courses pursued to provide a new curriculum in Marine Environment and Resources.
Particularly, effort was placed to combine the multilingual character of Europe and the need to facilitate communication and exchange by using English as a lingua franca.
In UPV/EHU, although some courses were originally taught in Spanish or Basque, all courses in the MER programme are given in English since 2006, albeit to ensure subsistence of the European multicultural heritage, tutorials, practicals, examinations and Master Thesis can be undertaken in either English, French, Spanish or Basque.
In UB1, courses were started to be offered in English in the academic year 2009‐2010.
Starting in 2012‐2013, the Université de Liège (ULg) will incorporate into the MER Consortium as a full Partner University.
