Introduction

Welcome, and Congrats on your Purchase of 50 Filthy Funk Licks!

These 50 tasty little gems are the funky medicine you need to cure your tired un-funky solos! The licks combine healthy doses of syncopation, chromaticism, dynamics and killer phrasing to deliver a sound and feel seldom heard from today’s players.

As you make your way through the book a few things will definitely help you along:

1. A feel for 16th note time. Most of these licks are based on 16th notes and as such you must be able to keep your right arm moving in time to maintain correct picking direction. This is especially key in being able to pull them off at full tempo.

2. Attention to detail. Small things make a big difference. Pay close attention to the performance tips that go with each lick as these contain helpful insights such as dynamics, alternate fingerings and articulation notes.

3. Patience. Some of these are tough! Start slow and work your tempo up gradually, not moving up tempo until you can play it cleanly slower. It’s better to play a lick cleanly at a slow tempo than sloppy played fast. Take your time!

So enjoy! And make sure to apply your favorites in your playing as soon as possible to build a huge vocabulary of funky awesomeness.

How To Use This Ebook

This ebook is divided up into 5 parts.

Part 1 10 Licks for C7

Part 2 10 Licks for E minor

Part 3 10 Licks for G7 to C7

Part 4 10 Licks for D minor

Part 5 10 Licks for A minor

There are 2 examples per page, with TAB/notation and Performance Tips for each. Performance Tips will include insights such as alternative fingerings, suggested picking direction, dynamics etc.

The top of each page has a clickable heading that will take you to the respective webpage that contains the video clips for your current part. The videos will be clearly marked with a name that corresponds to the same example in the ebook; example C7 #1. Each video will have 3 or 4 repetitions of the lick at full speed tempo, followed by 2 or 3 repetitions at a slower speed and finally a very slow speed close up view.

Backing tracks can be downloaded on the Book Homepage. Each backing track will have full and slow speeds.

**It is HIGHLY recommended to take note of where the roots are in relation to each lick. This will allow you to transpose them to other keys as necessary. I also recommend you use a metronome when practicing without the backing tracks. Set at a slow tempo at first and gradually increase tempo only when you can play the lick cleanly at the slower tempo**

Performance Tip You may wish to use the fourth finger on the E flat note if you prefer. Also you could do a slide instead of a bend from the F note.

Lick #2

Performance Tip Make sure to keep your right arm swinging in 16th note motion to keep alternate picking going. You could choose to play the second note with your fourth finger instead of your third finger.

Performance Tip To achieve the right funky attack make sure to pay attention to the staccato notes and play them very short.

Performance Tip Bend the second note very slowly for the right feel.

Performance Tip Play the first two notes staccato. They should also be picked with an up stroke. You could slide from the 8th to the 9th fret instead of picking both notes if you choose.

Performance Tip This one can be a bit tricky. I suggest starting it very slowly. Also make sure that the slides at the end ring together.

Performance Tip Use strict alternate picking here in order to keep up at tempo. You may choose to slide between the last 3 notes if you wish.

Performance Tip This is one of the more difficult licks in the book. Make sure to start the lick on an upstroke and maintain alternate picking.

Performance Tip Pay attention to the rest. You can also play the bent note with your third finger.

Performance Tip Maintain a very light and bouncy touch with the left hand so you do not slur your notes together. Also pay attention to the slide into the first note.

Performance Tip Pay close attention to fingering on this one for the best accuracy and efficient way of playing it. First note played should be an upstroke if counting correctly.

Performance Tip Slide into first note can be done with the third finger. Pull off from 13th to 12th fret could be a slide instead.

Performance Tip Alternately the slides could be done as pull-offs. Also pay attention to the last two notes which are very staccato for a funky effect.

Performance Tip For best results and to get the right feel on this one maintain strict 16th note right hand motion. Your first note should be an upstroke.

Performance Tip Slide up to the 12th fret could be done with a third finger instead. Maintain strict alternate picking to get the right feel.

Performance Tip Pay attention to the staccato notes at the end of this one to get the right spanky type of feel.

Performance Tip Play the first note staccato to get the right funky feel. Also you may want to play the first couple notes as downstrokes to get a more aggressive attack.

Performance Tip Maintain strict alternate picking on this one to get the right feel, your first note should be an upstroke. You can play the walked down notes with either the 3rd and 2nd or 2nd and 1st fingers.

Performance Tips You could also slide up to the first note with your third finger. The second note should be played staccato.

Performance Tips Make sure to maintain alternate picking and keep your arm motion in 16th notes. The first note should be an upstroke. You could use the third finger on the note at the 15th fret instead. This pattern could repeat indefinitely.

Performance Tip Maintain strict alternate picking throughout. First note should be played as an upstroke. The second note should be played staccato.

Performance Tip This one is a little bit rhythmically challenging. Make sure your notes are in the right spot and keep your arm swinging in 16th’s.

Performance Tip In order to not have the notes at the 14th and 13th fret ring together lift your third finger slightly after hitting the A note at the 14th fret. This lick could be repeated indefinitely.

Performance Tip The first note could be played with the third finger instead of the fourth. Be careful on the double stop bend ensuring it’s very slight, no more than 1/4 step.

Performance Tip You can choose to play the first note as either B at the 9th fret or C at the 10th fret, I played each way in the video. Play the A note on the 10th fret staccato.

Performance Tip Bend on the 10th fret should be fairly slow and do not release it until you hit the G note at the 8th fret.

Performance Tip You could slide the D sharp at the 8th fret to the D natural at the 7th fret. Also pay attention to staccato notes.

In a performing career spanning 3 decades, Guitarist/Instructor Rick Stickney has played over 5,000 gigs in venues big and small all over the world. From funk, soul and r&b bands in the US, blues in Bangkok, rock in Tokyo, jazz in the Maldives…guitar has led Rick on a journey that few experience.

Rick’s debut CD “Sonic Postcards” was released in 2010 and highlights his heavy blues, jazz, and r&b influences, showcasing his versatility both as an instrumentalist and composer.

Throughout his travels Rick has always gained the attention of students eager to learn the secrets of old-school guitar playing and over the years he has taught in 6 countries. Noticing a void of quality r&b guitar instruction online, Rick launched his TastyGuitar YouTube Channel in 2016. The channel has since become known as one of the best channels for r&b, funk and soul guitar instruction on YouTube, with tens of thousands of subscribers worldwide.
