In 1981 the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics will becelebrating its 50th Anniversary. As you may recall, the two antecedent Societies(the American Rocket Society and the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences) werefounded in 1930 and 1932, respectively, and the AIAA was formed by a merger ofthese two Societies in 1963. Special activities are planned throughout 1981, butthe major celebration of the 50th Anniversary will take place at the AIAA AnnualMeeting to be held in the Long Beach, California, Convention Center, May 12-14,1981. The theme of the meeting will be "Frontiers of Achievement", with fourprincipal series of sessions on Our Aerospace Heritage, Learn from the Masters,The Art of Designing, and The Future is Now.

The culminating event of the celebration will be the 50th Anniversary HonorsNight Banquet on May 14, also to be held at the Long Beach Convention Center. Forthis special occasion we plan to have many of the Founders; the 5 new HonoraryFellows and the 50 new Fellows to be elected in 1981, as well as the current HonoraryFellows and Fellows of the Institute; the Presidents of other Societies in the U.S.and abroad; the Chairmen of the Board and Presidents of the Corporate Member Com­panies; and appropriate government officials.

We are planning to put together a slide show for the Banquet whichwill feature interviews with some of those early pioneers. Theinterviews, of course, will be done in advance of the meeting.
