Dear families of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, God says to Moses, “This is what you shall tell the Israelites: “I AM“ He sent me to you . . . The LORD, the God of your [ancestors], the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:14, 15). As Jesus would later say, God is not a God of the dead, but of the living, and so we believe that the dead will one day rise. At this midpoint of Lent, we pause to consider how our repentance is leading us to the Resurrection, to our reunion with the great “I AM.” Part of our repentance involves working to secure justice for all and helping our neighbor to live in God’s ways. We encourage each other and nurture each other, like the compassionate gardener of today’s Gospel, who tells the owner of the orchard that he will nurture the tree, fertilize it, and perhaps it will bear fruit. As we are in the third Sunday of lent we start the Scrutiny’s with those attending Easter Vigil for their Sacraments. These Scrutiny’s take place at the 5:00PM Saturday Masses. Scrutiny’s are an evaluation of our spiritual journey in our lives. Where do we need to make changes in our daily lives to get closer to God. This is both necessary for the members of RCIA/RCIC and for all of us at IHM during Lent. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us,. Father Quang
Padre Quang

More About St. Vincent de Paul
You all probably know St. Vincent de Paul has a food pantry every Friday for low income families in Brentwood. We feed a lot of families from our food pantry. However, that is not all we do. Sometimes families who try hard to manage, have an unexpected expense and other bills which do not get paid on time. In a few months, there might be a Shut-Off notice and then the family finds themselves in a difficult situation. Sometimes a family needs money to pay other necessary but unplanned expenses. St. Vincent de Paul tries hard to help these people in need. Of course, this takes funds. If every family in the Immaculate Heart of Mary parish would contribute something on the 5th Sunday second collection, we could help more people in need. March 31st is the next collection for St. Vincent de Paul, please be as generous as you can.

Bishop Barber personally chose the theme for this year’s Bishop’s
Appeal. For context, I will share the historical story which is the basis for the theme. The following passage
is from St. Bonaventure's The Life of Francis:
“One day when Francis went out to meditate in the fields he was passing by the church of San
Damiano which was threatening to collapse because of extreme age. Inspired by the Spirit, he went inside
to pray. Kneeling before an image of the Crucified, he was filled with great fervor and consolation as he
prayed. While his tear-filled eyes were gazing at the Lord's cross, he heard with his bodily ears a voice
coming from the cross, telling him three times: “Francis, go and repair my house which, as you see, is
falling into ruin.”
Trembling with fear, Francis was amazed at the sound of this astonishing voice, since he was alone
in the church; and as he received in his heart the power of the divine words, he fell into a state of ecstasy.
Returning finally to his senses, he prepared to put his whole heart into obeying the command he had
received. He began zealously to repair the church materially, although the principle intention of the words
referred to that Church which Christ purchased with his own blood, as the Holy Spirit afterward made him
realize...”
Bishop Barber’s thoughts: “Rebuild My Church” was the message Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ once spoke to St. Francis.
At first, Francis took the assignment literally, physically restoring the abandoned chapel at San Damiano.
Later, he came to understand his mission in a more spiritual sense: to return the church to the radical
simplicity of the gospel, the spirit of poverty, and the image of Christ in the poor. Before long, other
people joined him in his life of poverty, dedicating their lives to the teachings of Christ and by doing so,
“Rebuilding Christ’s Church”
As your shepherd for almost six years, it has been my mission to build up Christ’s Church in the
Diocese of Oakland. Most recently, I have spoken to you regarding my three pillars: the Sunday Mass
experience; practicing spiritual and corporal works of mercy; and forming ourselves into missionary
disciples. I call on you today to assist me in strengthening these pillars as we work together to Rebuild
Christ’s Church! +
