Cape May dates back to 1620 when it was claimed for the Dutch as “New Netherland” by Captain Cornelius Mey. Things have changed since then, including our name...an homage to the good Dutch Captain.

AfterCaptainMey’sarrivalandbeforethe Victorianssettledhere,allofCapeMay’sinhabitantsweretheKechemecheIndiansoftheNativeAmericanLenapetribe.Theyfound a sweet life here between the salty sea and the brackish bay,withrichfertilesoilandabountyofflora,faunaandfishes.

Inthelate1600’s,Quakersettlersformedoneofthearea’sfirstcommunities,withalocalgovernmentbasedonQuakertenets.Simultaneously,theCapebecamearobustwhalingandfishingcenter,attractingfamiliesfromthroughouttheNortheast.CapeMay was also a draw for sailors (and pirates) and legend has it that Captain Kidd stopped here during his “privateering” career. There isspeculationthattheCaptainburiedhistreasureonourshores,but the booty is yet to be found.

The late 1700’s brought paved roads and railroads, providing easy transport to Cape Island, making it one of the most desired resorts in the country. Cape May grew rapidly through the years, becoming a very popular summer residence for the Philadelphiagentry,thanksinparttotheefficienttrainservicefromcitiesalongtheEasternseaboard.Countlessvestigesofour railed past can be seen in Cape May, from the beaches to the neighborhoods.Themostrecentfindingoccurredseveralyearsago, when railroad tracks (shown above) became visible on the beach between the sunken WWI concrete ship and the canal.

During the Civil War, the Kechemeche tribe and thevibrantQuakercommunity(well-knownfortheirabolitionistbeliefs)wereanintegralpartoftheUndergroundRailroad.Secretsymbolssewninto quilts and hung on the safe houses ushered slavesfromtheConfederateSouthtotheUnionNorth. Homes throughout the Cape May area are known to have tunnels and secret rooms used in theeffort.AmongtheheroesofthiserawasHarriettTubman,whoservedasacookinCapeMay in 1852.

Afterthewarended,disasterstruckin1878.CapeMayburnedalmostcompletelytotheground;anincinerationofthirtyblocksof homes, hotels and businesses. But the Cape Mayers rebuilt the town using architectural styles of the day, with features you see now...gingerbread, stained glass, turrets and dormers to the beautifulpaintcolors...ourtreasured“paintedladies.”

CapeMay’shistoricalsignificancewasfed- erally recognized when it was designated a NationalHistoricLandmarkin1976.This importantdesignationhelpedthecity’s dedicated residents to protect its treasures, both architecturally and culturally.

More Cape May History Cape May’s Best Kept Secret!Cape May’s red buoy that’s situated onthePromenade(whichwasform-erlyatraditionalboardwalk)isafavorite photo spot for visitors and residents alike.

A Little Promenade History...Cape MaywasthefirstNewJerseyresorttoconstructaboardwalk.Accordingto historical records, it was built in

Cape May in the late 1860’s. Through the decades, coastal storms devastated the wooden structure, and rebuilding became the normforourlittletown.

AMarchNor’easter,knownastheAshWednesdayStormof‘62destroyed all but two blocks of the boardwalk, sealing its fate onceandforall.Officialsappliedforandreceivedgrantfundingforthereconstructionoftheseawallor“promenade”thatgracesthe beachfront today.

Enjoy the Promenade...StrollingthePromenadeisafavoritepast- timeinCapeMay.Evenifyouthinkyou’renotastroller,youmaybecomeoneafterashorttimehere.Onthepromenade,early morning walkers share space with bikers and joggers. Bicycles are permittedonlyuntil10:00am;however,bepreparedfortheoccasionalrunnertrottingalongsideyou.

TheCapeMayPromenadealsooffersthefunfoodsofsummer: hotdogs,icecream,softpretzels,andpizza.Therearealsoafewsnack bars located on the beach for your convenience!

About Cape May Beaches

Beach Tags are required for adults and young ones aged 12 and over from Memorial Day toLaborDayfrom10amto5:30pm.Beachtags are free forVeteransandactivemilitaryofallbranchesofservice.Youmaypurchasebeachtags(daily/3-day/weekly)atallbeachentrances and at kiosks on the Promenade at ConventionHall,MadisonandBroadway.Byordinance, beach tags are non-transferrable.

Lifeguards and Beach PatrolLifeguardsare ondutyfromMemorialDaytoLaborDayfrom10amto5:30pmdaily,thentomid-September on selected beaches only.

A Beach Box is a personal beach storage unit and one of the features that make Cape May unique. Some homeowners rent beach boxes seasonally so you don’t have to lug all your equipment to the beach. Some owners stock the box with chairs and other beach gear.

The Cape May Point community takes very meticulouscareinmaintainingitsbeachesandduetoitsdesignationasthe“Premier Birding Destination in North America,” there is great respect for the Point’s environment and protected habitats.

Wandering around and exploring the Point, you’ll get the sense that you’re in a privateenclave...oranartist’scolony.Thearchitectureisvariedandthecottagesareespecially quaint.

VenturedowntoSunsetBeachfortheflaglowering ceremony, take a look at the Sunken (WWII) concrete ship or search the beach for “Cape May Diamonds.” These are quartz crystals smoothed by the sand and sea found on the beaches. They’re not diamonds of course,butthey’reawfullypretty!

While in the Point, visit the lighthouse and hawkwatchplatform.Hikethroughthewoodsandaroundthelaketomarvelatthematingpairs of swans. In the early spring to late fall, you’ll be joined by birders from all over the world.Also,inearlytomid-September,keepyour eye out for the Monarchs that migrate through our area on their way to Mexico for the winter!

About Cape May PointCape May Point beaches include the areas along the Cape May Point State Park on the AtlanticOceansideofthePoint,andontotheother side of the town extending to Sunset Beach.

To access the beaches near the lighthouse, park in the parking lot and follow the wooden walk-wayleadingtothebeach.Thesurfinthisareaisalittlebitrougherthanonotherbeaches,asthisistheconfluenceoftheoceanmeetingthebay.

AccesstothebeachesthroughoutCapeMayPoint are located at the end of the avenues, andtheseaccesspointsdoshifttominimizewear and tear on the dune systems.

Beach tags are required on Cape May Point beaches which are guarded from June 15th throughLaborDayfromtheStateParkareaatLighthouseAvenuetoAlexanderAvenue.BeyondthejettytoSunsetBeach,beachtagsare not required. Tags are available at reduced rates and are on sale at the Municipal Buildingorviamail.Ratesforthebeachtagswillbepublished in March 2017 on the borough’s website:www.capemaypoint.org.
