PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ALCOHOL USING YEAST
TRANSFORMED BY RHIZOPUS GLUCOAMYLASE GENE
Toshihiko Ashikari, Norihisa Nakamura, Yoshikazu Tanaka, Yuji Shibano, Hajime Yoshizumi, Osaka, Japan assigned to Suntory Limited
This invention provides a process for producing ethanol from a starchy material, wherein the starchy material is simultaneously subjected to saccharification and subsequent fermentation by use of a yeast host which has been transformed by an expressible recombinant vector com- prising a glucoamylase gene derived from a fungus of the genus Rhizopus.

PROTEIN FOODS AND FOOD INGREDIENTS AND PROCESSES FOR PRODUCING THEM FROM DEFATTED AND UNDEFATT’ED
OILSEEDS
James Lawhon, Khee C Rhee assigned to The Texas A&M University System
True oilseed protein curd products are produced from defatted and undefatted oilseeds and oilseed materials without inherent undesirable
components responsible for poor taste, odor and color. The curds are produced through alkali and water extraction of proteins from the in- soluble components. Ultrafiltration of the pro- tein extraction both purifies and concentrates the desirable high molecular weight protein macromolecules from the smaller (less than 50,000 daltons) less desirable ones. Further treatment with heat, acid and/or salt coagulates the protein to form a meat-like, chewy true curd which will not disintegrate when boiled. Extrac- tion of a storage protein fraction from glandless cottonseed by the same method will also yield a true curd never before possible.

COATED VETERINARY IMPLANTS
Ernest0 J Castillo, Kenneth E Eigenberg, Kanaiyalal R Patek Milton Sabacky assigned to Monsanto Company
Solid dosage forms of bioactive materials for parenteral administration such as porcine or bovine somatotropin pellets intended for sub- cutaneous implantation to improve food pro- duction of farm animals are coated with polyvinyl alcohol to extend the release charac- teristics of the material. The polyvinyl alcohol preferably has a molecular weight of from about 20, 000 to 100,000, a degree of hydrolysis of at least about 98%, and is applied from an aqueous solution by spray coating to form a continuous uniform covering 3 to 25 mum PVA/mmZ.
