notable that the foreclosure rate on Habitat homes isless than one percent - dramatically lower than the current national average of four percent.

Habitat's goal is not only to provide homes at affordable prices, but also to build structures that areenergy efficient and offer low maintenance costs. Ourlong-lasting finishes help to realize that goal, and formore than fifteen years Fine Paints has supportedHabitat projects. We've recently made a commitmentto the Martha's Vineyard chapter of Habitat to provideall interior and exterior coatings for two new homes ayear for the next five years. (As a side note, TheCharlotte Inn on Martha's Vineyard, which is alsopainted with Fine Paints, was rated the premier smallhotel in the world by Travel & Leisure Magazine. There's a certain balance and beauty in the fact that ourcoatings grace both ends of the spectrum on this quaintlittle island off the coast of Massachussetts.)

We're very proud of our affiliation with Habitat forHumanity, and look forward to continuing to workwith them in the future. To learn more about how youcan get involved, please visit the Habitat for Humanitywebsite at www.habitat.org.

Cordially.

Paint It Black ...... or red, or green, or ...

There's a curious piece of historybehind the preponderance of

black exterior doors on English homes.

In the mid-nineteenth century, life in jolly old England was downrightDickensian - the wealthy were stillwealthy, and the have-nots still hadnothing. And the doors and iron rails around houses were painted many colors, from red to blue, togreen, and occasionally, black.

But then, in 1862,Queen Victoria'shusband PrinceAlbert died and theBritish Empiredescended into anextended period ofmourning. Loyalsubjects throughoutthe Empire, in ademonstration ofdespair and respect,

painted their front doors, their iron railings, windowframes and barge boards black. The citizens of nationsopposed to the Crown - the Irish, the Scots and theDutch - reacted by painting their doors bright colorsas a bold indication of their feelings for Britannia.

Queen Victoria herself was inconsolable, and remainedin mourning for the next thirty-nine years until herdeath in 1901. In fact, from the day of Albert's deathforward, the Queen wore nothing but black.

The onset of World WarI saw many of those ironrails torn out and melted down for the wareffort. By the time theywere replaced, althoughthe public mourningperiod for Albert waslong over, the only colorthat seemed to be rightwas black. To this veryday, some ninety percentof doors and railings inEngland are paintedblack - an odd, thoughunintentional homage tothe beloved Prince.

No matter what your political allegiances, or how youfeel about the Brits, you know that the entranceway toyour home creates the first impression. Fine Paints orour retailers will supply you with everything requiredto properly prepare and paint your doors, inside andout, so that all guests will be greeted with the classicelegance, sheen, and unparalleled depth of color that only a high-quality enamel paint from theNetherlands can produce (brilliant or satin). You'llreceive everything you need - paint, primer, brush, thinner, sandpaper - along with our professional guidance, guaranteeing you a doorway that is sure tomake a lasting impression on all who pass through formany years to come for the special "kit" price of $100.

What's in a name?

Quite a lot if your name happens to be ECO. Thisimportant range of fine coatings offers an exciting

new direction in "green" paint technology. We believeECO represents the future in the world of beautiful, high performance enamels, suitable for interior andexterior use.

In order to fully understand ECO's unique place in the world of paint, a bit of background is in order.Basically, three components make up a can of paint -the pigment, the binder and the vehicle.

Pigment: Although the quality and quantity of pigment varies greatly from one paint to another, basically pigments are the inert solids which combinewith the binder to form the final paint film and give itcolor. Pigments used in waterborne and solventbornepaints are identical. Pigments used by Fine Paints ofEurope meet the highest standards of quality and aretypically milled much longer than the pigments usedin conventional coatings. The extremely fine grind ofFine Paints’ pigments is one of the reasons for the supe-rior depth of color, coverage, and durability of ourpaints.

Binder: The quality of the binder more than any othersingle factor is what distinguishes Fine Paints fromordinary coatings. Latex and acrylic binders dispersereadily in water and have been used since the early1950's for interior and exterior coatings. Traditionaloil or alkyd binders are generally regarded as far superior to latex and acrylics in areas of adhesion, leveling ability and the ability to deliver a true enameltouch and feel in both satin and brilliant finishes. Theenvironmental downside associated with the belovedtraditional oil paints has resulted from the fact that solvents are normally used as the vehicle.

Vehicle: Latex and acrylic formulations employ harmless water as their vehicle, making clean-up withsoap and water a reality and, contributing to the formulation of environmentally kind coatings. On theother hand, alkyd (oil) based paints typically employsolvents as the vehicle - this creates the potential forenvironmental damage resulting from the release ofvolatile organic compounds. In the opinion of thosewho love high-performance oil paints such asHollandlac, the extended life of these coatings compensates for their drawbacks. Indeed, on an annualized basis the V.O.C. release from well made solventborne coatings such as Hollandlac is frequentlyno greater than that resulting from the use of waterbornes which requirethree to four times theenergy input to produce.

Enter ECO - an advanced, durable, waterborne alkydoffering the traditional characteristics of a solventbornealkyd in an environmentally friendly formulation.ECO offers ease of application, enhanced color retentionand easy soap and water cleanup in an odorless coatingwhile providing the enhanced adhesion, opacity andbeautiful finish associated with traditional solventbornepaints. ECO's revolutionary binder has repeatedlyrevealed its tenacity and extreme durability in the field- and it is doing all this in an earth-friendly low V.O.C.formulation.

Easily applied by homeowner or professional, ECO isspecifically formulated for any interior or exteriorwooden surface (cabinets, doors, windows, new siding). It glides on effortlessly, self-levels, spreads evenly andquickly, and may also be sprayed. Brushes and rollersare readily cleaned with warm, soapy water. ECO finishes are scrubbable making it especially practical for use in kitchens, bathrooms, children's rooms - orany wooden element in your home. Its quick-dryingtime means that a coat of ECO primer and a first finishcoat of ECO Satin or Brilliant can easily be applied injust one day.

ECO is truly a coating that we can all feel good about. It's good for your home and it's better for our earth.

ECO primer and ECO paint have been subjected toaccelerated weathering tests at DL Labs, a governmentcertified testing facility. Based on lab results and use inthe field for the last five years we feel confident inadvising clients that an ECO system applied to a properly prepared substrate such as siding, exterior trim and windows can reasonably be expected to yieldtwelve to fifteen years service and is renewable with asingle dress coat of ECO. To view DL Labs’ resultsplease visit ECO and ECO primer sections of www.finepaintsofeurope.com

Fine Paints of Europe is a member of the U.S. GreenBuilding Council. Curvilinear forms of coiled and welded steel, tangential and intersecting ..." is how sculptor

John Clement chooses to characterize his work. Thecoating he chooses to paint his work is HollandlacBrilliant from Fine Paints of Europe, applied over Fine Paints’ ferrous metal primer.

A Brooklyn, New York based sculptor who was born in Philadelphia, John Clement studied at the School of Visual Arts and then began working professionallyunder the tutelage of internationally recognized sculptors such as Mark di Suvero and John Henry.Clement’s work has been exhibited in public art installations - as well as in solo and group exhibitions - across the country.

"My sculptures are three-dimensional realizations ofimaginary forms," says Clement. "I rely heavily on theartistic process, allowing the work to evolve andmature, eventually become self-referential. Although

many of my works are site-specific their form does notdirectly rely on the surrounding architecture or landscape. The clearly defined positive and negativespace of the work, combined with its scale, creates anew framework in which the surroundings can be experienced through the sculpture ... I choose to workwith steel and approach the material first as an artistand second as a craftsman. The success of my work doesnot rely upon gimmicks or trickery in the materials, but on the implied movement and strength of form ofeach individual piece. The bright, primary colors usedto paint the work serves to bring the form of the workto the forefront, enhancing the sense of the work leaping from the ground as well as protecting the material from corrosion."

We couldn't agree more. To see more of his inspirationalwork, visit John's website at www.firehousestudio.com.

Leave it to the Brits

With all the trendy tint

collections and the a la mode names for colors that constantly present themselves, you've got to hand it to the Brits who, in inimitable style, have had in place for some 108 years a true standard for"colour." Every government lorry, every RAF Spitfirefighter, every Churchill tank and every uniform fromevery service that you will see in England, is created to match standards which have served as one of the foundations of the former empire. Of course, everypaint company supplying coatings in the U.K. is conversant with the British Standard Colors.

Fine Paints of Europe is pleased to be the first NorthAmerican company to offer this venerable palette ofcolor standards to America. Now, British StandardColors such as Ironstone, Dark Admiralty Grey andVictorian Plum will be able to grace the palette ofhomeowners in the former American colonies.

So go ahead, mate. Paint your room Grayfire. Andconsider using Hollybush for your trim. The BritishStandard color deck, including 470 official colors is offered for $50, including a $25 credit couponredeemable through your local retailer or directly from Fine Paints of Europe.

As my mother always said," quips MarkChamberlain, "there's just no accounting for taste."

Well, she certainly brought up a son who, when itcomes to color, has an exquisite sense of both style andtaste. As anyone can see by looking at his work, Markis so much more than a just a "housepainter."

As resident Color Therapist for Apartment Therapy(www.apartmenttherapy.com), Mark Chamberlain is anartist whose passion is decorative painting and murals, but one who also paints interior walls with elan. Histaste in color often steers him to strong, dramatic interiors and so it follows that the clients who lean onhim for their decorative decisions are usually those whoare thought of as more "fashion forward."

Because Fine Paints of Europe's coatings are known forboth their beauty and durability, they make a perfectmedium for Mark's exceptional work. As he so aptlysays of our paints, " Once again, these Fine Paints ofEurope are wonderful to work with and come in someof the richest colors imaginable. Look how deliciousthat wall is against the white sofa! This red feels paprika, burgundy, brown and ruby all at the sametime ... the result truly does shimmer and change andone can begin to see how highlights and shadows suggest different hues. The texture of the paint isalmost teflon-like when dry. The covering power ofEurolux matte yields incredible color depth with justtwo coats - even in the darkest colors."

Sure, we often tout Fine Paints of Europe's rich rangeand depth of color and its superior durability, but having those words come from someone as talented anddemanding as Mark Chamberlain makes it all the moreweighty and gratifying. Thank you Mark, and keep upthe inspired work.

Mark Chamberlain's Color Therapy is posted Tuesdaysat www.apartmenttherapy.com, and he can be reachedby email at [email protected]. See more ofhis work on his website, www.markchamberlainpaint-ing.com. Mark Chamberlain is based in New YorkCity but, as he says, "Have brush will travel."
