TRAINING & PLACEMENT CELL OF SMMCA

The Training & Placement Cell of an academic institution harmonizes the efforts of the

members of faculty by providing placement opportunities to students and organizing

value–added programmes. It acts as one of the major interfaces with various

architectural firms.

SMMCA has an active Training and Placement Cell which assists the students in

selecting suitable organizations for undertaking professional training and facilitates the

placement of graduating students and also organizes value-added programmes. The

placement cell of SMMCA plays a vital role in career counseling of the students for

their successful career development and bridging the gap between academics and

profession.

The Training & Placement Cell plays a crucial role at two semesters –

1. INTERNSHIP TRAINING: Orienting and equipping VII semester students

for internship training and

2. PLACEMENT: Orienting and supporting X semester students for their

post-degree placement

INTERNSHIP TRAINING:

Each year the students are required to undertake internship for 1 year (previously it

was 6 months) before their thesis project. The objective of the internship training is to

acquaint students with practical aspects of architectural practice outside of the

academic world. Students gain orientation under an architect that includes the

process of development of conceptual ideas, presentation skills, involvement in

office discussions, client meetings, development of the concepts into working

drawings, tendering procedure, site supervision during execution and coordination

with the agencies involved in the construction process and to facilitate the

understanding of the evolution of an architectural project from design to execution,

thus preparing them for their professional practice ahead.

Page 3: 5.2 - smmca.edu.in · their successful career development and bridging the gap between academics and ... understanding of the evolution of an architectural project from design to

This internship is a significant step in the professional training of students and is their

preparatory step towards gaining good placement after getting a degree.

ENGAGING LEADING ARCHITECTS:

The college engages the leading architects of Nagpur and other prominent cities like

Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Delhi, etc. with the college in several capacities like

Visiting Faculty, Jury for Internal Assessment, University Jury, Guest Lectures, Panel

Discussion, Workshops, Training Programmes, etc. This greatly helps with the

placement of our students for training as well as post-degree placement as the

architects become aware of our college teaching philosophy and also the potential

and skills of our college students.

MODALITIES OF TRAINING & PLACEMENT CELL:

Following activities are typically carried out annually under the purview of Training

and Placement Cell of SMMCA -

Orientation Address to VII Sem students going for practical training for a

period of two semesters (VIII Sem and IX Sem) by SMMCA faculty and guest

speakers

Career Counselling for X sem students towards gaining orientation for

placement after degree procurement by SMMCA faculty and guest speakers

Presentations and talks on making of resume and portfolio

Updating the directory of architects and architectural firms for training as well

as placement and making it available to students for reference.

Revision and distribution of Practical Training booklet and brochure for

Hands-on workshop.

A personal visit to architectural firms, where students are undergoing practical

training, is undertaken. A feedback is taken from the architects regarding the

students’ performance in the office.

It is mandatory for students of SMMCA to attend a hands-on workshop as a part of

their practical training. This workshop takes place in the second half of December or

first half of January, before the students embark upon their 1-year practical training.

The hands-on workshop imparts experiential learning for students and gives them

grounding in hands-on techniques like mud construction, carpentry works, bamboo

construction, etc.

PLACEMENTS (POST-DEGREE):

In the field of architecture, the practice of Campus Interviews is negligible throughout

India. Placements are usually based on student portfolios and the interviews are

conducted at the respective offices.

However, SMMCA Placement Cell has attempted to bring architecture firms on

campus for Campus Interviews and students have been placed in the prestigious

architecture firms that have visited the college to conduct Campus Interviews.

Other than the placements through Campus Interviews, our students have secured

placement in illustrious architecture firms all over India. A large portion of the credit

for this goes to the efforts of the Placement Cell in orienting, guiding and supporting

the students appropriately.
