DIOCESE OF SIOUX FALLS Most Reverend Donald DeGrood, Bishop

LITURGY GUIDE—28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Welcome to the Cathedral of St. Joseph and thank you for joining us for the celebration of Holy Mass today! Please silence your cell phones and refrain from eating, drinking or chewing gum in the Cathedral. Please help keep our Cathedral tidy by utilizing the waste baskets found near the main entrances. Also, please refrain from taking pictures once Mass has begun. You are welcome to take pictures after Mass has concluded.

INTROIT (At 9:15 & 11AM, the Introit is sung by the choir, followed by the opening hymn.)

OPENING HYMN THAXTED 659 O God Beyond All Praising

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Wisdom 7:7-11 I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her, nor did I liken any priceless gem to her; because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire. Beyond health and comeliness I loved her, and I chose to have her rather than the light, because the splendor of her never yields to sleep. Yet all good things together came to me in her company, and countless riches at her hands.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 128:1-6 (Refrain sung first by cantor, then congregation repeat)

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain wisdom of heart. Turn back, O Lord! How long? Show pity to your serv-ants. R.

At dawn, fill us with your love; we shall exult and rejoice all our days. Give us joy for the days of our affliction, for the years when we looked upon evil. R.

Let your deed be seen by your servants, and your glorious power by their children. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; give success to the work of our hands. O give suc-cess to the work of our hands. R.

SECOND READING Hebrews 4:12-13 Brothers and sisters: Indeed the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.

Si iniquitates observaveris Domine, Domine quis sustinebit? Quia apud te propitiation est, Deus Israel (Verse) De profundis clamavi ad te Domine: Domine exaudi vocem meam.

If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But with you is found forgiveness, O God of Israel. (Verse) Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice.

PENITENTIAL ACT I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (striking breast three times) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

OFFERTORY HYMN (4PM & 7:30AM) ST. CATHERINE 520 Faith of Our Fathers

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please Stand (Refrain sung first by cantor, then congregation repeat)

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. R.

GOSPEL Mark 10:17-30 As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.” He replied and said to him, “Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.” Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” They were exceedingly astonished and said among them-selves, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “For human beings it is im-possible, but not for God. All things are possible for God.” Peter began to say to him, “We have given up everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and moth-ers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.’”

HOMILY

PROFESSION OF FAITH Please Stand I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

OFFERTORY ANTHEM (11AM) Samuel S. Wesley Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace (1810-1876)

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

PREPARATION OF THE ALTAR AND GIFTS

Recordare mei, Domine, omni po-tenta tui dominans: da sermonem rectum in os meum, ut placeant verba mea in conspectu principis.

Remember me, O Lord, you who dominate all authority; put the right words on my lips, so that my speech may be convincing in the presence of the King.

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON (9:15AM)

Celebrant: Pray brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. R. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow here) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee. The darkness is no darkness with thee, but the night is as clear as the day. The darkness and the light to thee, are both alike. God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. O let my soul live, and it shall praise thee. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forevermore. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee.

Relationship - Identity – Mission Who are you? What do you do? How do you do the things you do? Why do you do the things you do the way you do them? These are vital questions which must have compelling answers if our daily lives are to be marked by meaning, clear purpose, adventure, joy, peace and fulfillment. Who are we? The question has two inseparable answers for every Christian. First, we have a Baptismal identity. We are beloved sons and daughters of God through adoption in Jesus Christ:

Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. (1John 3:2)

Second, as God’s beloved children we are given a specific, stable mission by which we are given away in love – our voca-tion. Every human person is made to be given away in love; a free, total, faithful and life-giving gift of self. That gift is called forth either in an exclusive relationship (Married life) or in a universal, celibate fashion (Holy Orders, Consecrated life, and the generous Single life.) This is our vocational identity. It specifies the missionary focus of our baptismal identity. Like our Baptismal identity, the beauty, power and dignity of our vocational identity is lived in union with Jesus:

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. (John 20:21)

What we do, how we do what we do, and why we do the things we do the way we do them (our various occupations) must all respond to the truth of who we are. Our identity must inform our activity, our activities can never fashion or identity. Our baptismal and vocational identity, who we are in God’s sight and who He has made us to be in the world, nev-er changes. Our occupations, on the other hand, may come and go with time and circumstance. So the critical focus re-mains on being firmly rooted in the truth of who we are. Our true identity is communicated and revealed by Divine Love. It is totally independent of our successes, failures, stuff, and the opinion of others. The Eternal Son is the Eternal Son because he receives the Father’s total Self-gift, given in love. Relationship is what distinguishes the Persons (identity) of the Trinity. So too for us. We are affirmed in our baptismal and vocational identity, our true identity is strengthened and brought to full stature, as we receive and respond to the love of the Father, through Jesus, with Jesus, in Jesus, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. (Glory!) Listen to the exhortation of Jesus at the Last Supper: As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my

love. (John 15:9) Our relationship with the love of the Trinity establishes, re-veals, and secures our true identity, and that identity is the only life-giving, joyous, peaceful, sustainable, and fulfilling source of our daily activity. Look to Jesus. In the Gospel of John, we hear a constant re-frain from Jesus. He says only what He has heard from the Father. He does what He sees the Father doing. It is in His intimate love of the Father, that Jesus receives the gift of what He is to do and how He is to do it. In short, the “why” of what Jesus does and how He does it (His activity) is answered

by who He is, the Beloved Son, established in His relationship of love with the Father. We are called to nothing less. Below is a list of passages from John’s Gospel that speaks to Jesus’ own understanding that His daily activity flows from the truth of who He is in relationship with the Father. Over the next weeks, I encourage you to read them in their full context. Together let us pray for the grace to grow in our per-sonal love relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, that we may know the truth of who we are, and that the glori-ous power and dignity of our identity in Christ may inform, animate and direct all we do and say.
