Thomas Gorham

Thomas (Tommy) Alfred Gorham passed away April 25, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his family. Tommy is survived by his loving wife Judy, daughters Pat and Debbie, son James, fi ve grandchildren, fi ve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his son Jerrell. Tommy and Judy adored and cared for their children and were adored and cared for in turn. Tommy was the sixth of the 11 children of Pat and Mollie Gorham. He is preceded in death by sisters Mary McKee and Barbara West, brothers Patrick (Patsy), Phillip (Pinky), George (Pete) and James (Jimmy). He is survived by sisters Loretta Haggberg and Patricia Brown; brothers John (Jackie) and Daniel (Danny) Gorham and many, many nieces and nephews.

Tommy spent his younger

years caring for and riding his horses. After high school, Tommy spent two years in the US Army after which he went to work for Magma Copper, retiring in 1985. He soon went to work for Pinal County in Facilities Maintenance where he spent 10 years and once again retired. In his spare time, Tommy was always either a horseman or a race car driver. He wrangled cattle, maintained fences and windmills for friends and ranchers Billy Martin - JF, Manny Ruiz - 4R, and Milford Taylor - TU; then during racing season he worked on and drove his jalopy - # 18, at the Wheat Fields race track. He mentored his nephew Michael McKee on the racing circuit, starting him out with box cars and graduating to stock cars. Tommy also enjoyed a

Th omas ‘Tommy’ Alfred Gorhamtime when he played softball and bowled with the Top Hat team. THAT was a sight to behold! When Tommy became a family man he hung up his spurs and his driving gloves and his family was his priority. For the last few years of his full life Tommy was the “ne ighborhood watch” from his front

yard bench with his can of Bud (shh) and his Camel cigarettes; and an armchair TV fan of NASCAR and Rodeo. We are so happy that Tommy was able to celebrate Arizona First Families at this year’s Apache Leap Days Parade on the “covered wagon”. Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial was held at St Francis Church on Tuesday May 1, 2012 with interment following in the Gorham Plot at Fairview Cemetery, Superior. You will be missed, Tommy. On April 12, Pinal County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters from the San Manuel Fire Department were called to the scene of a vehicle fire in the 200 block of South Avenue A, San Manuel. The passenger compartment of the vehicle was fully engulfed by the time emergency crews were on scene. Not too long after the call for the vehicle fire, dispatchers had another call for a fire, this time in the desert area behind Minit Market on Avenue A in San Manuel. A third fire was soon reported, this time in the area of First and Park. Officials soon realized that they had an arson case. Once the fires were extinguished, investigation of the case was turned over to PCSO Deputy Corbiere Pecora. According to PCSO Lieutenant John Ellsworth, Pecora was able to identify the person he believed to be responsible for the fires.

Tydel Scott Ray

Arrest made in San Manuel arson case; victim notification in case leads deputy to drug bust

He obtained a confession from the suspect and has arrested him in connection with the fires. The suspect is a 16-year-old juvenile male. Pecora returned to the victim’s home in the 200 block of South Avenue A to notify him that an arrest had been made in the case and to obtain a witness statement. While he was on scene, he noticed a suspicious plant growing in the victim’s backyard, clearly seen through a screen door and a glass door. Based on his observations, Pecora

obtained a search warrant and located 10 marijuana plants growing in the backyard at 237 South Avenue A, San Manuel.

A subsequent search of the home’s interior found numerous items of drug paraphernalia and other amounts of marijuana.

Pecora arrested the homeowner, identified as Tydel Scott Ray, 45, of San Manuel. He was charged with 10 counts of

cultivation of marijuana, two counts of possession of marijuana and eight counts of possession of

By John Hernandez A special meeting of the Mammoth Town Council was held last Thursday. For the first time in a while, the entire board was present for the meeting although that did not last long. During the call to the public, Clifford Deathrage handed out a copy of letter from Sheriff Paul Babeu to Rachelle Sanchez with cost estimates for the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office to provide law enforcement coverage for the Town of Mammoth. Deathrage said that he had brought the issue up at a previous meeting that former Mayor Craig Williams and Rachel Sanchez were trying to get rid of the Mammoth Police Department. He had heard that last week council member Larry Ramirez had called him a liar and now he was providing proof and would like an apology. Councilman Williams responded later in the meeting that the correspondence was to see what it would cost the town if they had to bring in the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. Williams explained that it was agreed to at a council meeting and he had suggested that they look into other agencies as a contingency plan. It was just a suggestion and they looked

at the proposal. At the time Mammoth was having trouble within their police force. Another member of the public questioned why they were amending/revising the personnel policy on drug testing. Were they suspending the testing? Mayor Alvaro Barcelo explained that they were not stopping the drug testing but including new council members to be tested. “If every employee has to do it,” the mayor said, “we have to be held to the same standards.” Another member of the public spoke out and accused the Mayor and board of “nepotism” saying there were two brothers and their uncle on the board referring to the Alvaro and Juan Barcelo and Joe Tamayo. He also questioned why they were calling so many special meetings and asked for some answers. Mayor Barcelo said they did not have to answer the questions. Councilman Larry Ramirez then said that by law they were supposed to respond to questions, citing ARS § 38-431.01. Mayor Barcelo and Councilman Ramirez then got into a slightly heated argument over the statute. Mayor Barcelo threatened to charge Ramirez with

misconduct. Councilman Ramirez told the mayor that “if you are going to fire people without cause, then I am leaving.” Ramirez then walked out of the meeting and did not return. Following the call to the public, the council went into an executive (secret) session to meet with their attorney for advice. When the council returned, Williams made a motion to reinstate Rachelle Sanchez as town manager/town clerk. No one seconded the motion. Sanchez was placed on administrative leave on Monday, April 23, by the mayor. No explanation was given for this action. Vice-Mayor Wickham then made a motion to appoint Betty Chavez to investigate the suspension of the Town Manager/Clerk after first suggesting that Mammoth Police Officer Marty McIntosh be appointed as investigator. Town Attorney Tresa Georgini objected to that appointment. Williams requested a discussion on the motion to appoint Chavez and questioned how Chavez came to be at the meeting since he had never seen her at one before. She responded that she had been at the last six

meetings which drew some laughter from the audience. Williams then asked her about her background. Chavez explained how she works for Adelante Juntos which serves the entire Tri-Community and surrounding areas. The motion to approve

her as the investigator passed with five yes votes and Williams voting no. A motion to install interim Town Manager/Clerk Patsy Large to the election committee was made. Craig Williams requested to put on the record that Patsy Large’s

sister is also on the election committee. The motion passed five to one with Williams voting no. You can view much of the Mammoth Town Council meeting on the Miner website: www.copperarea.com.

The Mammoth Police Report is submitted by the department. According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear

in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. April 15 A fire was reported in a yard in the 100 block of Clark Street. The fire was a cooking fire and the residents were advised to keep the fire low. April 16 A dispute between two people was reported in

the area of Highway 77. No law enforcement intervention was needed. April 17 Suspicious activity was reported in the 200 block of Catalina Drive. April 18 A welfare check was requested at a residence across from La Casita. Everything was found to be secure.

Editor, San Manuel Miner: We want to thank whoever is responsible for covering the graffiti on the ball park building, as well as getting the county to replace the stop sign at the corners of Park Place and Park Avenue. That was also covered with same awful purple paint. Also, thanks for asking the post office to paint over the graffiti on the mailbox on Avenue B. We called the hotline and, when they called back, they said they had not yet gotten around to covering the mess on these places. By Mackenzie YubetaMrs. Formo’s Kindergarten Class The butterfl ies have long tongues to eat fruit. Butterfl ies are not mammals, they are insects. They eat fruit. Butterfl ies are camoufl age so they can hide. We have butterfl ies in our class, Mrs. Formo’s Kindergarten class, and they started out as eggs, then out of the egg came a caterpillar. The caterpillar ate a lot of fruit jelly, then he made a cocoon. Next , he became a butterfl y. T h e s e c h a n g e s are called metamorphosis. Our butterfl ies are called Painted Lady Butterfl ies.

By Araceli CurryMrs. Sanchez’s 3/4 Combo On April 24, 2012, I got to school and we headed out to Benson because fi rst through sixth graders were going on a fi eld trip to Kartchner Caverns. Kartchner Caverns is a place with caves. Here is a fact about the cave’s history. In November of 1974, Gary Tenen and Randy Tufts were exploring the limestone hills at the eastern base of the Whetstone mountains. They were looking for a cave no one had ever found. Finally, they found a sinkhole and they went down into the hole. The two men dropped 14 feet and found the caves. When we arrived at Kartchner Caverns, we ate lunch fi rst, then we went to the museum. We saw many interesting things. We had a park ranger who

guided us through one of the caves. The cave we went in was called the Rotunda/Throne room. We walked ½ mile of winding trails through the cavern. One of the rules was that you could not touch the cave walls or anything else except the aluminum rail because the oils on our hands could negatively effect the caves. Another fact is that the temperature inside the cave was 72 degrees Fahrenheit and 99% humidity. The other room is called the Big Room where all the bats live, but we couldn’t go in that room because it was mating season for the bats. After we took a look at the cave, we went to the gift shop. Then, we went to the auditorium to watch a video but didn’t have time. We loaded on the bus and headed back to school. And this is something exciting we did at MESS.

By Hannah Smallhouse and Mia Dale Construction is the art, trade, or work of building. There is construction going on near our school. When the construction is fi nished, the building will be a Kids’ Closet. It will be a huge, red closet fi lled with clothes, shoes, coats, and other things kids need. We are surprised and happy that Kids’ Closet is so close. Our elementary school walked down to the Kids’ Closet and we asked questions about the building and design. We met the construction supervisor Mr. John Van Winkle, Paula Morgan who is a co-director of Kids’ Closet, Buck Thomas (owner of T B Contractors), and Maggie DeBlock who is the president of the SaddleBrooke Community Outreach Program. We saw a huge blueprint which showed us the design. A big room in the back will be a warehouse and there is one big room for kids to try on shoes and pick out clothes. There are two classrooms in the front with bathrooms. It will be easier for the workers to get from place to place because the rooms are closer. In Mr. Egan’s class, Patrick Castro asked, “How big is the building?” Mr. Van Winkle said that the building is 150 feet long and 80 feet wide. Patrick fi gured out that this is an area of 12,000 square feet. He also found out that the building weighs 69,000 pounds. Angel Cano wondered how much the building will cost. It will cost approximately $600,000 when it is done. Montana Smith from Mrs. Formo’s class asked, “Why aren’t there any windows?” Mr. Van Winkle said that it saves energy not to have windows because it would be colder in the winter and warmer in the summer inside if there were windows. We want to thank the people from the Kids’ Closet, the SaddleBrooke Community Outreach, and the T B Contractors for letting us go check out the Kids’ Closet.

Students in Mr. Egan’s class compared the size of an ostrich egg to Mr. Egan’s hand. (Francisco Curry photo)

The Surprise Egg Mr. Egan’s fi fth and sixth grade combo class has an ostrich egg that we wanted to incubate. The egg was not fertilized so we are going to try duck eggs instead. I think that it is going to be fun. My teacher, Mr. Egan, wanted to keep the ostrich egg a secret. We could not incubate, so he decided to show it to everyone and asked them to guess how much it weighed. It weighed 3 pounds. The egg weighs 25 times more than a chicken egg. An ostrich egg takes 39-44 days to hatch.

Eighteen students will re-ceive degrees and certificates on Friday, May 4, during the 2012 Central Arizona College Aravaipa Campus commence-ment ceremony. The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. on the Aravaipa Campus which is located at 80440 East Aravaipa Road just off of Arizona State Highway 77 between Mammoth and Win-kelman. Manuel Chavez, a teacher at First Avenue Elementary School in San Manuel, will serve as the commencement speaker. Manuel was born in Tucson but has lived his entire life in Mammoth. His home was a school building that his parents moved from old Mam-

moth to New Mammoth. While growing up in the 60s and 70s he spent a lot of time outdoors. This led to the de-velopment of hobbies he still enjoys today. He enjoys read-ing, especially comic books, hunting, fishing, hiking, rock hounding and looking for fossils. As a kid his favorite comic book was Sgt. Rock. His favorite comic is still Sgt. Rock as it is being reprinted. Manuel said that this comic book was very detailed and filled with facts that taught him geography and history. He also taught his son to read by introducing him to comic books. Manuel attended Mammoth Elementary, Gardner Middle School and graduated from

San Manuel High School. It was at San Manuel High that a discouraging comment by a counselor would influence Manuel to improve his educa-tion some day. The counselor asked Manuel about what career he would like to pursue after graduation. Manuel told her he would like to be a for-est ranger. She told him, “You can’t be a forest ranger, you need to go to college and you don’t have the grades.” At the time Manuel’s grade point average was a solid “C.” “Her words discouraged me and to this day are engrained in my memory,” Manuel said. “I said to myself that I would not become a forest ranger, but one day I would be in a position to offer students

words of encouragement.” After graduation, Manuel went to work for Magma Copper Company. It was his intent to work six months and then attend Central Arizona College full time. As life usu-ally happens, the six months turned into 20 years. In his career at Magma/BHP, he worked as an underground miner, journeyman heavy equipment mechanic, and mechanic/driller. It was also at the mine that he had oppor-tunities to conduct workshops for his fellow miners which gave him the desire to set a goal of becoming a teacher. In 1999 BHP laid off many of its employees due to the declining copper market. Manuel became a displaced

CAC graduation ceremony set for Friday at Aravaipaminer. Fortunately, government as-sistance was made available to retrain the displaced min-ers. Manuel enrolled in the teacher program sponsored by Central Arizona College and Northern Arizona University. He worked as a tutor, librarian and teacher while attending school. He said that all of the professors and staff at the Ara-vaipa Campus of CAC “were an inspiration and their com-mitment towards my educa-tion prepared me well for my university studies.” Four years later he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Educa-tion from Northern Arizona University. He started his teaching career and has been offering encouraging words to his students ever since. Manuel currently teaches sixth grade at First Avenue Elementary School in San Manuel. He has also taught at Avenue B Elementary School.

In 2008, Manuel was named the Mammoth San Manuel Unified School District Teach-er of the Year. He was the Arizona Teacher of the Year Ambassador for Excellence in 2009. As an Ambassador, he represented the teachers of Arizona in promoting educa-tion and conducting profes-sional development workshops at various colleges and univer-sities for future teachers. Manuel is also involved with the Exitos Escolar (Success in Middle School and Beyond), which is a program that is de-signed to support area students in attending higher education. Manuel says that what he likes about teaching is being able to bring his life experi-ences into the classroom and share them with the students. “By using real world sce-narios, my students better un-derstand how Academic State Standards are applied in the

By John Hernandez The winners of the Oracle Firewise poster contest were announced on Wednesday, April 25, at the Mountain Vista School gym. Members of the Oracle Firewise Board and the Oracle Fire Department

were present along with the Mt. Vista third and fourth grade classes. Students created posters about being Firewise. Their teachers were Mrs. Soule, Mrs. Cavanaugh and Mrs. Detrich. Fire Chief Albert Ortiz presented the awards to the winners.

MVS students show how ‘Firewise’ they are The honorable mention winners were Gilberto Pinedo, Ashley Jennings and Dabry Nicholson. They received a plaque and a goody bag with firewise items, a flashlight, posters and pencils. All the third and fourth grade students received a goody bag although not with some of the items in the winner’s bags. The top three winners received a goody bag with the same items as the honorable mention winners plus markers, Firewise stickers and a Firewise baseball cap. The third place winner was Isabelle Cline; second place winner was Abryana Bayze; and the Grand Prize award went to Samuel Reyes. Besides the goody bag items and first place plaque, Samuel and his family were invited to ride on the Oracle Fire Department fire engine in the Oaks Festival Parade.
